Asymptotic derivation of multicomponent compressible flows with heat conduction and mass diffusion

A Type-I model of a multicomponent system of fluids with non-constant temperature is derived as the high-friction limit of a Type-II model via a Chapman-Enskog expansion. The asymptotic model is shown to fit into the general theory of hyperbolic-parabolic systems, by exploiting the entropy structure inherited through the asymptotic procedure. Finally, by deriving the relative entropy identity for the Type-I model, two convergence results for smooth solutions are presented, from the system with mass-diffusion and heat conduction to the corresponding system without mass-diffusion but including heat conduction and to its hyperbolic counterpart.

Dispersive shocks in diffusive-dispersive approximations of elasticity and quantum-hydrodynamics

The aim is to assess the combined effect of diffusion and dispersion on shocks in the moderate dispersion regime. For a diffusive dispersive approximation of the equations of one-dimensional elasticity (or p-system), we study convergence of traveling waves to shocks. The problem is recast as a Hamiltonian system with small friction, and an analysis of the length of oscillations yields convergence in the moderate dispersion regime $\eps, δ\to 0$ with $δ= o(\eps)$, under hypotheses that the limiting shock is admissible according to the Liu E-condition and is not a contact discontinuity at either end state. A similar convergence result is proved for traveling waves of the quantum hydrodynamic system with artificial viscosity as well as for a viscous Peregrine-Boussinesq system where traveling waves model undular bores, in all cases in the moderate dispersion regime.

Existence and weak-strong uniqueness for Maxwell-Stefan-Cahn-Hilliard systems

A Maxwell-Stefan system for fluid mixtures with driving forces depending on Cahn-Hilliard-type chemical potentials is analyzed. The corresponding parabolic cross-diffusion equations contain fourth-order derivatives and are considered in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions. The main difficulty of the analysis is the degeneracy of the diffusion matrix, which is overcome by proving the positive definiteness of the matrix on a subspace and using the Bott--Duffin matrix inverse. The global existence of weak solutions and a weak-strong uniqueness property are shown by a careful combination of (relative) energy and entropy estimates, yielding $H^2(Ω)$ bounds for the densities, which cannot be obtained from the energy or entropy inequalities alone.

Optimization Methods for One Dimensional Elastodynamics

We propose a new approach for solving systems of conservation laws that admit a variational formulation of the time-discretized form, and encompasses the p-system or the system of elastodynamics. The approach consists of using constrained gradient descent for solving an implicit scheme with variational formulation, while discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods is used for the spatial discretization. The resulting optimization scheme performs well, it has an advantage on how it handles oscillations near shocks, and a disadvantage in computational cost, which can be partly alleviated by using techniques on step selection from optimization methods.

A discrete variational scheme for isentropic processes in polyconvex thermoelasticity

We propose a variational scheme for the construction of isentropic processes of the equations of adiabatic thermoelasticity with polyconvex internal energy. The scheme hinges on the embedding of the equations of adiabatic polyconvex thermoelasticity into a symmetrizable hyperbolic system. We establish existence of minimizers for an associated minimization theorem and construct measure-valued solutions that dissipate the total energy. We prove that the scheme converges when the limiting solution is smooth.

An energy stable and positivity-preserving scheme for the Maxwell-Stefan diffusion system

We develop a new finite difference scheme for the Maxwell-Stefan diffusion system. The scheme is conservative, energy stable and positivity-preserving. These nice properties stem from a variational structure and are proved by reformulating the finite difference scheme into an equivalent optimization problem. The solution to the scheme emerges as the minimizer of the optimization problem, and as a consequence energy stability and positivity-preserving properties are obtained.

A kinetic model for the sedimentation of rod-like particles

We consider a coupled system consisting of a kinetic equation coupled to a macroscopic Stokes (or Navier-Stokes) equation and describing the motion of a suspension of rigid rods in gravity. A reciprocal coupling leads to the formation of clusters: The buoyancy force creates a macroscopic velocity gradient that causes the microscopic particles to align so that their sedimentation reinforces the formation of clusters of higher particle density. We provide a quantitative analysis of cluster formation. We derive a nonlinear moment closure model, which consists of evolution equations for the density and second order moments and that uses the structure of spherical harmonics to suggest a closure strategy. For a rectilinear flow we employ the moment closure together with a quasi-dynamic approximation to derive an effective equation, The effective equation is an advection-diffusion equation with nonisotropic diffusion coupled to a Poisson equation, and belongs to the class of the so-called flux-limited Keller-Segel models. For shear flows, we provide an argument for the validity of the effective equation and perform numerical comparisons that indicate good agreement between the original system and the effective theory. Finally, a linear stability analysis on the moment system shows that linear theory predicts a wavelength selection mechanism for the cluster width, provided that the Reynolds number is larger than zero.

A variational approximation scheme for radial polyconvex elasticity that preserves the positivity of Jacobians

We consider the equations describing the dynamics of radial motions for isotropic elastic materials; these form a system of non-homogeneous conservation laws. We construct a variational approximation scheme that decreases the total mechanical energy and at the same time leads to physically realizable motions that avoid interpenetration of matter.

Convergence of Variational Approximation Schemes for Elastodynamics with Polyconvex Energy

We consider a variational scheme developed by S. Demoulini, D. M. A. Stuart and A. E. Tzavaras [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 157 (2001)] that approximates the equations of three dimensional elastodynamics with polyconvex stored energy. We establish the convergence of the time-continuous interpolates constructed in the scheme to a solution of polyconvex elastodynamics before shock formation. The proof is based on a relative entropy estimation for the time-discrete approximants in an environment of Lp-theory bounds, and provides an error estimate for the approximation before the formation of shocks.
