Vacuum decay in the presence of a cosmic string

We study the false vacuum decay and bubble nucleation in the presence of a cosmic string in dS spacetime. A cosmic string induces a deficit angle in spacetime around itself so the nucleated bubble has the shape of a rugby ball. Working in thin wall approximation and using the junction conditions we study the dynamics of the bubble wall and calculate the Euclidean action. An interesting feature in our analysis is that the tension of the string is screened by the bubble such that an observer inside the bubble measures a different value of the tension than an outside observer. We show that the string can act as a catalyzer in which the nucleation rate is enhanced compared to the Coleman-de Luccia instanton. However, in general, the nucleation rate is not a monotonic function of the difference between the two tensions so in some regions of the parameters space the nucleation rate may be smaller than the Coleman-de Luccia bubble.

Effective field theory of statistical anisotropies for primordial bispectrum and gravitational waves

We present the effective field theory studies of primordial statistical anisotropies in models of anisotropic inflation. The general action in unitary gauge is presented to calculate the leading interactions between the gauge field fluctuations, the curvature perturbations and the tensor perturbations. The anisotropies in scalar power spectrum and bispectrum are calculated and the dependence of these anisotropies to EFT couplings are presented. In addition, we calculate the statistical anisotropy in tensor power spectrum and the scalar-tensor cross correlation. Our EFT approach incorporates anisotropies generated in models with non-trivial speed for the gauge field fluctuations and sound speed for scalar perturbations such as in DBI inflation.

Loop quantum cosmology of Bianchi IX: Inclusion of inverse triad corrections

We consider the loop quantization of the (diagonal) Bianchi type IX cosmological model. We explore different quantization prescriptions that extend the work of Wilson-Ewing and Singh. In particular, we study two different ways of implementing the so-called inverse triad corrections. We construct the corresponding Hamiltonian constraint operators and show that the singularity is formally resolved. We find the effective equations associated with the different quantization prescriptions, and study the relation with the isotropic $k$=1 model that, classically, is contained within the Bianchi IX model. We use geometrically defined scalar observables to explore the physical implications of each of these theories. This is the first part in a series of papers analyzing different aspects of the Bianchi IX model, with inverse corrections, within loop quantum cosmology.

Primordial inhomogeneities from massive defects during inflation

We consider the imprints of local massive defects, such as a black hole or a massive monopole, during inflation. The massive defect breaks the background homogeneity. We consider the limit that the physical Schwarzschild radius of the defect is much smaller than the inflationary Hubble radius so a perturbative analysis is allowed. The inhomogeneities induced in scalar and gravitational wave power spectrum are calculated. We obtain the amplitudes of dipole, quadrupole and octupole anisotropies in curvature perturbation power spectrum and identify the relative configuration of the defect to CMB sphere in which large observable dipole asymmetry can be generated. We observe a curious reflection symmetry in which the configuration where the defect is inside the CMB comoving sphere has the same inhomogeneous variance as its mirror configuration where the defect is outside the CMB sphere.

Constraint Lie algebra and local physical Hamiltonian for a generic 2D dilatonic model

We consider a class of two dimensional dilatonic models, and revisit them from the perspective of a new set of "polar type" variables. These are motivated by recently defined variables within the spherically symmetric sector of 4D general relativity. We show that for a large class of dilatonic models, including the case \emph{with} matter, one can perform a series of canonical transformations in such a way that the Poisson algebra of the constraints becomes a Lie algebra. Furthermore, we construct Dirac observables and a reduced Hamiltonian that accounts for the time evolution of the system. Thus, with our formulation, the systems under consideration are amenable to be quantized with loop quantization methods.

Loop quantum cosmology of k=1 FLRW: Effects of inverse volume corrections

We consider the k=1 Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) model within loop quantum cosmology (LQC), from the perspective of the two available quantization prescriptions. We focus our attention on the existence of the so called `inverse corrections' in the quantization process. We derive the corresponding quantum constraint operators, and study in detail the issue of the self-adjointness of the quantum Hamiltonian constraint for two different quantizations based on open holonomies. Furthermore, we analize in detail the resulting effective theories, paying special attention to issues such as the boundedness of different scalar observables such as energy density and expansion. We show that the inclusion of the inverse corrections solves one of the main undesirable features of the previous formalism, namely the unboundedness of the energy density and expansion near the bounce on the full (effective) phase space. We briefly comment on possible consequences of this new feature.

Loop Quantum Cosmology: Anisotropy and singularity resolution

In this contribution we consider the issue of singularity resolution within loop quantum cosmology (LQC) for different homogeneous models. We present results of numerical evolutions of effective equations for both isotropic as well as anisotropic cosmologies, with and without spatial curvature. To address the issue of singularity resolution we examine the time evolution of geometrical and curvature invariants that yield information about the semiclassical spacetime geometry. We discuss generic behavior found for a variety of initial conditions. Finally, we show that the modifications which come from Loop Quantum Cosmology imply a non-chaotic effective behavior in the vacuum Bianchi IX model.

Loop quantum cosmology of k=1 FRW: A tale of two bounces

We consider the k=1 Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) model within loop quantum cosmology, paying special attention to the existence of an ambiguity in the quantization process. In spatially non-flat anisotropic models such as Bianchi II and IX, the standard method of defining the curvature through closed holonomies is not admissible. Instead, one has to implement the quantum constraints by approximating the connection via open holonomies. In the case of flat k=0 FRW and Bianchi I models, these two quantization methods coincide, but in the case of the closed $k$=1 FRW model they might yield different quantum theories. In this manuscript we explore these two quantizations and the different effective descriptions they provide of the bouncing cyclic universe. In particular, as we show in detail, the most dramatic difference is that in the theory defined by the new quantization method, there is not one, but two different bounces through which the cyclic universe alternates. We show that for a `large' universe, these two bounces are very similar and, therefore, practically indistinguishable, approaching the dynamics of the holonomy based quantum theory.

On the measure problem in slow roll inflation and loop quantum cosmology

We consider the measure problem in standard slow-roll inflationary models from the perspective of loop quantum cosmology (LQC). Following recent results by Ashtekar and Sloan, we study the probability of having enough e-foldings and focus on its dependence on the quantum gravity scale, including the transition of the theory to the limit where general relativity (GR) is recovered. Contrary to the standard expectation, the probability of having enough inflation, that is close to one in LQC, grows and tends to 1 as one approaches the GR limit. We study the origin of the tension between these results with those by Gibbons and Turok, and offer an explanation that brings these apparent contradictory results into a coherent picture. As we show, the conflicting results stem from different choices of initial conditions for the computation of probability. The singularity free scenario of loop quantum cosmology offers a natural choice of initial conditions, and suggests that enough inflation is generic.
