A unique discrimination between new physics scenarios in $b\rightarrow sμ^+μ^-$ anomalies

A number of observables related to the $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ transition show deviations from their standard model predictions. A global fit to the current $b\rightarrow s\ell^+\ell^-$ data suggests several new physics solutions. Considering only one operator at a time and new physics only in the muon sector, it has been shown that the new physics scenarios (I) $C_9^{\rm NP}<0$, (II) $C_{9}^{\rm NP} = -C_{10}^{\rm NP}$, (III) $C_9^{\rm NP} = -C_9^{\prime \rm NP}$ can account for all data. In this work, we develop a procedure to uniquely identify the correct new physics solution. The scenario II predicts a significantly lower value of $\mathcal{B}(B_s\to μ^+μ^-)$ and can be distinguished from the other two scenarios if the experimental uncertainty comes down by a factor of three. On the other hand, a precise measurement of the CP averaged angular observables $S_9$ in high $q^2$ bin of $B\to K^*μ^+μ^-$ decay can uniquely discriminate between the other two scenarios. We propose new methods, in terms of azimuthal angle asymmetries, to measure $S_9$ with the necessary precision.

Can neutron star discriminate between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos?

Any observable repercussion of electromagnetic properties of neutrinos will provide a perspicuous signature of new physics. This includes the phenomenon of neutrino spin flip in the propinquity of an external magnetic field. In this work, we study the inklings of spin flip in a neutron star with a radially varying magnetic field and matter density, known as a magnetar, which is also a source of profuse production of neutrinos during its initial stage of thermal evolution. We find that a precise measurement of neutrino flux emerging from a neutron star would reeducate discrimination between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos as the flux reduction due to spin flip oscillations are different for both types of neutrinos. Further, the reduction of flux is more preeminent near the surface as compared to the core of a neutron star.

Can NSI affect non-local correlations in neutrino oscillations?

Non-local correlations in entangled systems are usually captured by measures such as Bell's inequality violation. It was recently shown that in neutrino systems, a measure of non-local advantage of quantum coherence (NAQC) can be considered as a stronger measure of non-local correlations as compared to the Bell's inequality violation. In this work, we analyze the effects of non standard interaction (NSI) on these measures in the context of two flavour neutrino oscillations for DUNE, MINOS, T2K, KamLAND, JUNO and Daya Bay experimental set-ups. We find that even in the presence of NSI, Bell's inequality violation occurs in the entire energy range whereas the NAQC violation is observed only in some specific energy range justifying the more elementary feature of NAQC. Further, we find that NSI can enhance the violation of NAQC and Bell's inequality parameter in the higher energy range of a given experimental set-up; these enhancements being maximal for the KamLAND experiment. However, the possible enhancement in the violation of the Bell's inequality parameter over the standard model prediction can be up to 11% whereas for NAQC it is 7%. Thus although NAQC is a comparatively stronger witness of nonclassicality, it shows lesser sensitivity to NSI effects in comparison to the Bell's inequality parameter.

Effects of non-standard interaction on microscopic black holes from ultra-high energy neutrinos

If the universe has more than 4-dimensions, the TeV scale gravity theories predict formation of microscopic black holes due to interaction of ultra high energy neutrinos coming from some extragalactic origin with the nucleons present in the Earth's atmosphere. The decay of these black holes can generate high multiplicity events which can be detected through neutrino telescopes. Ultra high energy neutrinos can also produce events without the formation of black holes which can be distinguished from the black hole events depending on their topological structure. In this work we study the effects of non-standard interaction on the production of these shower events. We find that new physics has inconsequential impact on the number of events produced through the generation of black holes. For events produced without the formation of black holes, new physics can only provide a marginal deviation. Therefore a large enhancement in the number of shower events over the standard model prediction can provide unambiguous signatures of TeV scale gravity in the form of microscopic black hole production.

Neutrino spin-flavour precession in magnetized white dwarf

Due to notoriously small value of the neutrino magnetic moment, the phenomena of neutrino spin flavour precession (SFP) requires very high magnetic field. This makes only a handful of systems suitable to study this phenomena. By the observation of SFP, the Dirac and Majorana nature of neutrinos is expected to be distinguished. In this work, we point out the potential of white dwarf (WD) system in studying the spin-flavour oscillation of neutrinos. From recent analysis, it has been found that young isolated WDs may harbor very strong internal magnetic field, even without exhibiting any surface magnetic field. The presence of magnetic field enhances the cooling process and along with that, renders the spin-flavour oscillation of neutrinos emitted in the neutrino cooling process. Employing the standard WD specifications, we analyse whether a magnetized WD is a suitable environment to distinguish between the Dirac and Majorana nature of neutrino. Lower value of spin flavour transition probability implies reduced active neutrino flux which is possible to be estimated in terrestrial neutrino detectors. We find that the spin flavour transition probability of Dirac neutrinos is much higher in comparison to the Majorana neutrino which converts the active neutrino flavours to sterile in a significant amount. We also examine the sensitivity of the spin flavour transition probability to the neutrino magnetic moment.

New Physics solutions for $b\rightarrow c\,τ\,\barν$ anomalies after Moriond 2019

At Moriond 2019, Belle collaboration has announced new measurements on the flavour ratios $R_D - R_{D^*}$ which are consistent with their Standard Model predictions within $1.2σ$. After inclusion of these measurements, the global tension in $R_D - R_{D^*}$ has reduced from $4.1σ$ to $3.1σ$ which is still significant. The measurements of these ratios indicate towards the violation of lepton flavor universality in $b\rightarrow c\,l\,\barν$ decay. Assuming new physics in $b\rightarrow c\,τ\,\barν$ transition, we have done a global fit to all available data in this sector to identify the allowed new physics solutions. We find that there are seven allowed new physics solutions which can account for all measurements in $b\rightarrow c\,τ\,\barν$ transition. We show that a simultaneous measurement of the $τ$ polarization fraction and forward-backward asymmetry in $B\rightarrow D\,τ\,\barν$, the zero crossing point of forward backward asymmetry in $B\rightarrow D^*τ\barν$ and the branching ratio of $B_c\rightarrow τ\,\barν$ decay can distinguish these seven new physics solutions if they can be measured with a required precision.

Predictions for $B_s \to \bar{K}^* \ell \,\ell$ in non-universal $Z'$ models

The lepton flavor universality violating (LFUV) measurements $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$ in $B$ meson decays can be accounted for in non-universal $Z'$ models. We constrain the couplings of these $Z'$ models by performing a global fit to correlated $b \to s \ell \ell$ and $b \to d \ell \ell $ processes, and calculate their possible implications for $B_s \to \bar{K}^*\ell \ell$ observables. For real new physics (NP) couplings, the 1-$σ$ favored parameters allow the corresponding LFUV ratio $R_{K^*}^{(s)}$ in $B_s \to \bar{K}^*\ell \ell$ to range between 0.8 -- 1.2 at low $q^2$. Complex NP couplings improve the best fit only marginally, however they allow a significant enhancement of the branching ratio, while increasing the range of $R_{K^*}^{(s)}$ at low $q^2$ to 0.8 -- 1.8. We find that NP could cause zero-crossing in the forward-backward asymmetry $A_{FB}$ to shift towards lower $q^2$ values, and enhancement in the magnitude of integrated $A_{FB}$. The $CP$ asymmetry $A_{CP}$ may be suppressed and even change sign. The simultaneous measurements of integrated $R_{K^*}^{(s)}$ and $A_{CP}$ values to 0.1 and 1% respectively, would help in constraining the effective NP Wilson coefficient $C_9$ in $ b \to d μμ$ interactions.

A global fit to $b\rightarrow cτ\barν$ anomalies after Moriond 2019

At Moriond 2019, Belle collaboration announced their new measurements on $R_D$ and $R_{D^*}$ which are in agreement with their Standard Model (SM) predictions within $1.2σ$. After inclusion of these measurements, the discrepancy between the world averages and the SM predictions of $R_D$-$R_{D^*}$ comes down from $4.1σ$ to $3.1σ$. Here we do a global fit by taking all measurements in $b\rightarrow cτ\barν$ transition. We find that there are seven allowed new physics solutions, each with different Lorentz structure. Further we show that it is possible to distinguish between them by means of the five observables: the $τ$ polarization fraction in the decay $B \rightarrow D τ\barν$, the precision measurement of $R_D$, the forward-backward asymmetries in the decays $B \rightarrow (D,D^*) τ\barν$ and the branching ratio of $B_c\rightarrow τ\barν$.

A quantum information theoretic quantity sensitive to the neutrino mass-hierarchy

In this work, we derive a quantum information theoretic quantity similar to the Leggett-Garg inequality, which can be defined in terms of neutrino transition probabilities. For the case of $ν_μ\to ν_e/\barν_μ\to\barν_e$ transitions, this quantity is sensitive to CP violating effects as well as the neutrino mass-hierarchy, namely which neutrino mass eigenstate is heavier than the other ones. The violation of the inequality for this quantity shows an interesting dependence on mass-hierarchy. For normal (inverted) mass-hierarchy, it is significant for $ν_μ\to ν_e$ ($\barν_μ\to \barν_e$) transitions. This is applied to the two ongoing accelerator experiments T$2$K and NO$ν$A as well as the future experiment DUNE.

Resolving $R_D$ and $R_{D^*}$ anomalies

The current world averages of the ratios $R_{D^{(*)}}$ are about $4σ$ away from their Standard Model prediction. These measurements indicate towards the violation of lepton flavor universality in $b\rightarrow c\,l\,\barν$ decay. The different new physics operators, which can explain the $R_{D^{(*)}}$ measurements, have been identified previously. We show that a simultaneous measurement of the polarization fractions of $τ$ and $D^*$ and the angular asymmetries $A_{FB}$ and $A_{LT}$ in $B\rightarrow D^*τ\barν$ decay can distinguish all the new physics amplitudes and hence uniquely identify the Lorentz structure of new physics.

Solutions to $R_D$-$R_{D^*}$ in light of Belle 2019 data

Earlier this year, the Belle collaboration presented their new measurements of $R_D$ and $R_{D^*}$ using a new method. These measurements are consistent with the Standard Model predictions, whereas the global averages of the earlier measurements had a $4.1σ$ discrepancy. With the inclusion of the new data in the global averages, the discrepancy comes down to $3.1σ$. In this work, we study the study the new physics solutions to the $R_D$-$R_{D^*}$ anomaly allowed by the reduction in the discrepancy. Among the four fermion operators, which arise through a single particle exchange, only the $(V-A)$ operator solution survives. We found three additional solutions with two dis-similar operators. The branching ratio of $B_c\rightarrow τ\,\barν$ is powerful discriminant between these four allowed solutions.

Flavor signatures of isosinglet vector-like down quark model

We consider a model where the standard model is extended by the addition of a vector-like isosinglet down-type quark b'. We perform a chi square fit to the flavor physics data and obtain the preferred central values along with errors of all the elements of the measurable 3 X 4 quark mixing matrix. The fit indicates that all the new-physics parameters are consistent with zero and the mixing of the b' quark with the other three is constrained to be small. The current flavor physics data rules out possibility of detectable new physics signals in most of the flavor physics observables. We also investigate possible deviations in the standard model Wtb couplings and bottom quark coupling to Higgs boson. We find that these deviations are less than a percent level which is too small to be observed at the LHC with current precision.

The Unruh effect interpreted as a quantum noise channel

We make use of the tools of quantum information theory to shed light on the Unruh effect. A modal qubit appears as if subjected to quantum noise that degrades quantum information, as observed in the accelerated reference frame. The Unruh effect experienced by a mode of a free Dirac field, as seen by a relativistically accelerated observer, is treated as a noise channel, which we term the Unruh channel. We characterize this channel by providing its operator-sum representation, and study various facets of quantum correlations, such as, Bell inequality violations, entanglement, teleportation and measurement-induced decoherence under the effect. We compare and contrast this channel from conventional noise due to environmental decoherence. We show that the Unruh effect produces an amplitude-damping-like channel, associated with zero temperature, even though the Unruh effect is associated with a non-zero temperature. Asymptotically, the Bloch sphere subjected to the channel does not converge to a point, as would be expected by fluctuation-dissipation arguments, but contracts by a finite factor. We construct for the Unruh effect the inverse channel, a non-completely-positive map, that formally reverses the effect, and offer some physical interpretation.

A quantum information theoretic analysis of three flavor neutrino oscillations

Correlations exhibited by neutrino oscillations are studied via quantum information theoretic quantities. We show that the strongest type of entanglement, genuine multipartite entanglement, is persistent in the flavour changing states. We prove the existence of Bell-type nonlocal features, in both its absolute and genuine avatars. Finally, we show that a measure of nonclassicality, dissension, which is a generalization of quantum discord to the tripartite case, is nonzero for almost the entire range of time in the evolution of an initial electron-neutrino. Via these quantum information theoretic quantities capturing different aspects of quantum correlations, we elucidate the differences between the flavour types, shedding light on the quantum-information theoretic aspects of the weak force.

New-physics signals of a model with a vector-singlet up-type quark

The VuQ model involves the addition of a vector isosinglet up-type quark to the standard model. In this model the full CKM quark mixing matrix is 4 X 3. Using present flavor-physics data, we perform a fit to this full CKM matrix, looking for signals of new physics (NP). We find that the VuQ model is very strongly constrained. There are no hints of NP in the CKM matrix, and any VuQ contributions to loop-level flavor-changing b -> s, b -> d and s -> d transitions are very small. There can be significant enhancements of the branching ratios of the flavor-changing decays t -> u Z and t -> c Z, but these are still below present detection levels.

Quantum Fisher and Skew information for Unruh accelerated Dirac qubit

We develop a Bloch vector representation of Unruh channel for a Dirac field mode. This is used to provide a unified, analytical treatment of quantum Fisher and Skew information for a qubit subjected to the Unruh channel, both in its pure form as well as in the presence of experimentally relevant external noise channels. The time evolution of Fisher and Skew information is studied along with the impact of external environment parameters such as temperature and squeezing. The external noises are modelled by both purely dephasing phase damping as well as the squeezed generalized amplitude damping channels. An interesting interplay between the external reservoir temperature and squeezing on the Fisher and Skew information is observed, in particular, for the action of the squeezed generalized amplitude damping channel. It is seen that for some regimes, squeezing can enhance the quantum information against the deteriorating influence of the ambient environment. Similar features are also observed for the analogous study of Skew information, highlighting the similar origin of the Fisher and Skew information.

Re-examining sin(2beta) and Delta m(d) from evolution of B(d) mesons with decoherence

In the time evolution of neutral meson systems, a perfect quantum coherence is usually assumed. The important quantities of the B(d) system, such as sin (2beta) and Delta m(d), are determined under this assumption. However, the meson system interacts with its environment. This interaction can lead to decoherence in the mesons even before they decay. In our formalism this decoherence is modelled by a single parameter lambda. It is desirable to re-examine the procedures of determination of sin(2beta) and Delta m(d) in meson systems with decoherence. We find that the present values of these two quantities are modulated by lambda. Re-analysis of B(d) data from B-factories and LHCb can lead to a clean determination of lambda, sin(2beta) and Delta m(d).

New Physics in b -> s mu+ mu-: CP-Conserving Observables

We perform a comprehensive study of the impact of new-physics operators with different Lorentz structures on decays involving the b -> s mu+ mu- transition. We examine the effects of new vector-axial vector (VA), scalar-pseudoscalar (SP) and tensor (T) interactions on the differential branching ratios and forward-backward asymmetries (A_{FB}'s) of Bsbar -> mu+ mu-, Bdbar -> Xs mu+ mu-, Bsbar -> mu+ mu- gamma, Bdbar -> Kbar mu+ mu-, and Bdbar -> K* mu+ mu-, taking the new-physics couplings to be real. In Bdbar -> K* mu+ mu-, we further explore the polarization fraction f_L, the angular asymmetry A_T^{(2)}, and the longitudinal-transverse asymmetry A_{LT}. We identify the Lorentz structures that would significantly impact these observables, providing analytical arguments in terms of the contributions from the individual operators and their interference terms. In particular, we show that while the new VA operators can significantly enhance most of the asymmetries beyond the Standard Model predictions, the SP and T operators can do this only for A_{FB} in Bdbar -> Kbar mu+ mu-.

b -> s Decays in a model with Z-mediated flavor changing neutral current

In the scenario with Z mediated flavor changing neutral current occurring at the tree level due to the addition of a vector-like isosinglet down-type quark d' to the SM particle spectrum, we perform a chi square fit using the flavor physics data and obtain the best fit value along with errors of the tree level Zbs coupling, U_{sb}. The fit indicates that the new physics coupling is constrained to be small: we obtain |U_{sb}| <= 3.40 X 10^{-4} at 3 sigma. Still this does allow for the possibility of new physics signals in some of the observables such as semileptonic CP asymmetry in Bs decays.

Constraints on the Four-Generation Quark Mixing Matrix from a Fit to Flavor-Physics Data

In the scenario with four quark generations, we perform a fit using flavor-physics data and determine the allowed values -- preferred central values and errors -- of all of the elements of the 4X4 quark mixing matrix. In addition to the direct measurements of some of the elements, we include in the fit the present measurements of several flavor-changing observables in the K and B systems that have small hadronic uncertainties, and also consider the constraints from the vertex corrections to Z -> b bbar. The values taken for the masses of the fourth-generation quarks are consistent with the measurements of the oblique parameters and perturbativity of the Yukawa couplings. We find that |{\tilde V}_{tb}| >= 0.98 at 3sigma, so that a fourth generation cannot account for any large deviation of |{\tilde V}_{tb}| from unity. The fit also indicates that all the new-physics parameters are consistent with zero, and the mixing of the fourth generation with the other three is constrained to be very small: we obtain |{\tilde V}_{ub'}| < 0.06, |{\tilde V}_{cb'}| < 0.027, and |{\tilde V}_{tb'}| < 0.31 at 3sigma. Still, this does allow for the possibility of new-physics signals in Bd, Bs and rare K decays.

New Physics in b -> s mu+ mu-: CP-Violating Observables

We perform a comprehensive study of the impact of new-physics operators with different Lorentz structures on CP-violating observables involving the b -> s mu+ mu- transition. We examine the effects of new vector-axial vector (VA), scalar-pseudoscalar (SP) and tensor (T) interactions on the CP asymmetries in the branching ratios and forward-backward asymmetries of Bs -> mu mu, B -> Xs mu mu, Bs -> mu mu gamma, B -> K mu mu, and B -> K* mu mu. In B -> K* mu mu, we also explore the direct CP asymmetries in the longitudinal polarization fraction f_L and the angular asymmetries A_T^{(2)} and A_{LT}, as well as the triple-product CP asymmetries A_T^{(im)} and A^{(im)}_{LT}. We find that, in almost all cases, the CP-violating observables are sensitive only to new physics which involves VA operators. The VA new physics may therefore be unambiguously identified by a combined analysis of future measurements of these CP-violating observables.

Neutral Gauge Boson Contributions to the Dimuon Charge Asymmetry in B Decays

Recently, the D0 Collaboration measured the CP-violating like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry in neutral B decays, finding a 3.2sigma difference from the standard-model (SM) prediction. A non-SM charge asymmetry a_sl^s suggests a new-physics (NP) contribution to Bs-Bsbar mixing. In this case, in order to explain the measured value of a_sl^s within its 1sigma range, NP must be present in Gamma_12^s, the absorptive part of the mixing. In this paper, we examine whether such an explanation is possible in models with flavor-changing Z (ZFCNC) or Z' (Z'FCNC) gauge bosons. The models must also reproduce the measured values of the indirect CP asymmetry S_psi-phi in Bs -> J/psi phi, and Delta Gamma_s, the Bs-Bsbar width difference. We find that the ZFCNC model cannot reproduce the present measured values of S_psi-phi and a_sl^s within their 1sigma ranges. On the other hand, in the Z'FCNC model, the values of all three observables can be simultaneously reproduced.

New-physics contributions to the forward-backward asymmetry in B -> K* mu+ mu-

We study the forward-backward asymmetry (AFB) and the differential branching ratio (DBR) in B -> K* mu+ mu- in the presence of new physics (NP) with different Lorentz structures. We consider NP contributions from vector-axial vector (VA), scalar-pseudoscalar (SP), and tensor (T) operators, as well as their combinations. We calculate the effects of these new Lorentz structures in the low-q^2 and high-q^2 regions, and explain their features through analytic approximations. We find two mechanisms that can give a significant deviation from the standard-model predictions, in the direction indicated by the recent measurement of AFB by the Belle experiment. They involve the addition of the following NP operators: (i) VA, or (ii) a combination of SP and T (slightly better than T alone). These two mechanisms can be distinguished through measurements of DBR in B -> K* mu+ mu- and AFB in B -> K mu+ mu-.

SM with four generations: Selected implications for rare B and K decays

We extend our recent work and study implications of the Standard Model with four generations (SM4) for rare B and K decays. We again take seriously the several 2-3 $σ$ anomalies seen in B, $B_s$ decays and interpret them in the context of this simple extension of the SM. SM4 is also of course of considerable interest for its potential relevance to dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking and to baryogenesis. Using experimental information from processes such as $B \to X_s γ$, $B_d$ and $B_s$ mixings, indirect CP-violation from $K_L \to ππ$ etc along with oblique corrections, we constrain the relevant parameter space of the SM4, and find $m_{t'}$ of about 400-600 GeV with a mixing angle $| V_{t'b}^*V_{t's}|$ in the range of about (0.05 to 1.4)$\times 10^{-2}$ and with an appreciable CP-odd associated phase, are favored by the current data. Given the unique role of the CP asymmetry in $B_s \to ψϕ$ due to its gold-plated nature, correlation of that with many other interesting observables, including the semileptonic asymmetry ($A_{SL}$) are studied in SM4. We also identify several processes, such as $B \to X_s ν\barν$, $K_L \to π^0 ν\bar ν$ etc, that are significantly different in SM4 from the SM. Experimentally the very distinctive process $B_s\to μ^+μ^-$ is also discussed; the branching ratio can be larger or smaller than in SM, $(3.2 \to 4.2)\times 10^{-9}$, by a factor of ${\cal{O}}(3)$.

B_s --> mu+ mu- decay in the R-parity violating minimal supergravity

We study B_s --> mu+ mu- in the context of the R-parity violating minimal supergravity in the high tan beta regime. We find that the lowest value of the branching ratio can go well below the present LHCb sensitivity and hence B_s --> mu+ mu- can even be invisible to the LHC. We also find that the present upper bound on Br(B_s --> mu+ mu-) puts strong constraint on the minimal supergravity parameter space. The constraints become more severe if the upper bound is close to its standard model prediction.

CP asymmetry in the decays B --> (X_s, X_d) mu+ mu- with four generations

We estimate the CP asymmetry A_{CP}(q^2) in the decays B --> X_s mu+ mu- and B --> X_d mu+ mu- in the standard model (SM) with an additional fourth generation. We use a parametrization that allows us to explore the complete parameter space of the 4X4 quark mixing matrix, and constrain these parameters from the current data on B decays. We find that the enhancement in A_{CP}(q^2) depends strongly on the mass of the t', the up-type quark in the fourth generation. For m_t' around 400 GeV, the CP asymmetry in the high-q^2 region (q^2 > 14.4 GeV^2) can be enhanced by more than an order of magnitude for B --> X_s mu+ mu- and up to a factor of 6 for B --> X_d mu+ mu-. There is no enhancement in the low-q^2 region (1< q^2 <6 GeV^2). With increasing m_t', the A_{CP}(q^2) in the high-q^2 (low-q^2) region first decreases (increases) and then saturates at a value a few times the SM prediction. In the high-q^2 region of B --> X_s mu+ mu-, this saturation value may be up to 25 times the SM expectation.

Tension between scalar/pseudoscalar new physics contribution to B_s --> mu+ mu- and B --> K mu+ mu-

New physics in the form of scalar/pseudoscalar operators cannot lower the semileptonic branching ratio B(B --> K mu+ mu-) below its standard model value. In addition, we show that the upper bound on the leptonic branching ratio B(B_s --> mu+ mu-) sets a strong constraint on the maximum value of B(B --> K mu+ mu-) in models with multiple Higgs doublets: with the current bound, B(B --> K mu+ mu-) cannot exceed the standard model prediction by more than 2.5%. The conclusions hold true even if the new physics couplings are complex. However these constraints can be used to restrict new physics couplings only if the theoretical and experimental errors in B(B --> K mu+ mu-) are reduced to a few per cent. The constraints become relaxed in a general class of models with scalar/pesudoscalar operators.

The fourth family: a simple explanation for the observed pattern of anomalies in B-CP asymmetries

We show that a fourth family of quarks with $m_{t'}$ in the range of (400 - 600) GeV provides a rather simple explanation for the several indications of new physics that have been observed involving CP asymmetries of the b-quark. The built-in hierarchy of the 4$\times$4 mixing matrix is such that the $t'$ readily provides a needed {\it perturbation} ($\approx 15%$) to $\sin 2 β$ as measured in $B \to ψK_s$ and simultaneously is the dominant source of CP asymmetry in $B_s \to ψϕ$. The correlation between CP asymmetries in $B_s \toψϕ$ and $B_d\toϕK_s$ suggests $m_{t'} \approx$ (400 - 600) GeV. Such heavy masses point to the tantalizing possibility that the 4th family plays an important role in the electroweak symmetry breaking.

Large forward-backward asymmetry in B --> K mu+ mu- from new physics tensor operators

We study the constraints on possible new physics contribution to the forward-backward asymmetry of muons, A_{FB}(q^2), in B --> K mu+ mu-. New physics in the form of vector/axial-vector operators does not contribute to A_{FB}(q^2) whereas new physics in the form of scalar/pseudoscalar operators can enhance A_{FB}(q^2) only by a few per cent. However new physics the form of tensor operators can take the peak value of A_{FB}(q^2) to as high as 40% near the high-q^2 end point. In addition, if both scalar/pseudoscalar and tensor operators are present, then A_{FB}(q^2) can be more than 15% for the entire high-q^2 region q^2 > 15 GeV^2. The observation of significant A_{FB} would imply the presence of new physics tensor operators, whereas its q^2 dependence could further indicate the presence of new scalar/pseudoscalar physics.

New physics upper bound on the branching ratio of B_s --> l+ l-

We consider the most general new physics effective Lagrangian for b --> s l+ l-. We derive the upper limit on the branching ratio for the processes B_s --> l+ l- where l=e, mu, subject to the current experimental bounds on related processes, B --> K l+ l- and B --> K* l+ l-. If the new physics interactions are of vector/axial-vector form, the present measured rates for B --> (K,K*) l+ l- constrain B(B_s --> l+ l-) to be of the same order of magnitude as their respective Standard Model predictions. On the other hand, if the new physics interactions are of scalar/pseudo-scalar form, B --> (K,K*) l+ l- rates do not impose any constraint on B_s --> l+ l- and the branching ratios of these decays can be as large as present experimental upper bounds. If future experiments measure B(B_s --> l+ l-) to be > 10^{-8} then the new physics giving rise to these decays has to be of the scalar/pseudo-scalar form.
