Higher-Dimensional Symmetry of AdS$_2\times$S$^2$ Correlators

It was recently shown that IIB supergravity on AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ enjoys 10d conformal symmetry and that superstring theory on this background can be described using a 10d scalar effective field theory. In this paper we adapt these two complementary approaches to correlators of hypermultiplets in AdS$_2\times$S$^2$. In particular, we show that 4-point correlators of $1/2$-BPS operators in the 1d boundary can be computed using 4d conformal symmetry and a 4d effective action in the bulk. The 4d conformal symmetry is realised by acting with Casimirs of $SU(1,1|2)$, and is generically broken by higher derivative corrections. We point out similar structure underlying $α'$ corrections to IIB supergravity in AdS$_5\times$S$^5$. In particular, while the $α'^3$ corrections can be written in terms of a sixth order Casimir acting on a 10d conformal block, similar structure does not appear in higher-order corrections. We note however that a specific combination of higher derivative corrections can give rise to Witten diagrams with higher dimensional symmetry at the integrand level, with breaking then arising from the measure.

3d N=4 Super-Yang-Mills on a Lattice

In this paper we explore a new approach to studying three-dimensional N=4 super-Yang-Mills on a lattice. Our strategy is to complexify the Donaldson-Witten twist of four-dimensional N=2 super-Yang-Mills to make it amenable to a lattice formulation and we find that lattice gauge invariance forces the model to live in at most three dimensions. We analyze the renormalization of the lattice theory and show that uncomplexified three-dimensional N=4 super-Yang-Mills can be reached in the continuum limit by supplementing the lattice action with appropriate mass terms.

6d Dual Conformal Symmetry and Minimal Volumes in AdS

The S-matrix of a theory often exhibits symmetries which are not manifest from the viewpoint of its Lagrangian. For instance, powerful constraints on scattering amplitudes are imposed by the dual conformal symmetry of planar 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory and the ABJM theory. Motivated by this, we investigate the consequences of dual conformal symmetry in six dimensions, which may provide useful insight into the worldvolume theory of M5-branes (if it enjoys such a symmetry). We find that 6d dual conformal symmetry uniquely fixes the integrand of the one-loop 4-point amplitude, and its structure suggests a Lagrangian with more than two derivatives. On integrating out the loop momentum in $6-2 ε$ dimensions, the result is very similar to the corresponding amplitude of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. We confirm this result holographically by generalizing the Alday-Maldacena solution for a minimal area string in Anti-de Sitter space to a minimal volume M2-brane ending on pillow-shaped Wilson surface in the boundary whose seams correspond to a null-polygonal Wilson loop. This involves careful treatment of a prefactor which diverges as $1/ε$, and we comment on its possible interpretation. We also study 2-loop 4-point integrands with 6d dual conformal symmetry and speculate on the existence of an all-loop formula for the 4-point amplitude.

On-Shell Diagrams for N = 8 Supergravity Amplitudes

We define recursion relations for N = 8 supergravity amplitudes using a generalization of the on-shell diagrams developed for planar N = 4 super-Yang-Mills. Although the recursion relations generically give rise to non-planar on-shell diagrams, we show that at tree-level the recursion can be chosen to yield only planar diagrams, the same diagrams occurring in the planar N = 4 theory. This implies non-trivial identities for non-planar diagrams as well as interesting relations between the N = 4 and N = 8 theories. We show that the on-shell diagrams of N = 8 supergravity obey equivalence relations analogous to those of N = 4 super-Yang-Mills, and we develop a systematic algorithm for reading off Grassmannian integral formulae directly from the on-shell diagrams. We also show that the 1-loop 4-point amplitude of N = 8 supergravity can be obtained from on-shell diagrams.

Soft Theorems from Conformal Field Theory

Strominger and collaborators recently proposed that soft theorems for gauge and gravity amplitudes can be interpreted as Ward identities of a 2d CFT at null infinity. In this paper, we will consider a specific realization of this CFT known as ambitwistor string theory, which describes 4d Yang-Mills and gravity with any amount of supersymmetry. Using 4d ambitwistor string theory, we derive soft theorems in the form of an infinite series in the soft momentum which are valid to subleading order in gauge theory and sub-subleading order in gravity. Furthermore, we describe how the algebra of soft limits can be encoded in the braiding of soft vertex operators on the worldsheet and point out a simple relation between soft gluon and soft graviton vertex operators which suggests an interesting connection to color-kinematics duality. Finally, by considering ambitwistor string theory on a genus one worldsheet, we compute the 1-loop correction to the subleading soft graviton theorem due to infrared divergences.

Ambitwistor strings at null infinity and subleading soft limits

The relationships between extended BMS symmetries at null infinity and Weinberg's soft theorems for gravitons and photons together with their subleading generalizations are developed using ambitwistor string theory. Ambitwistor space is the phase space of complex null geodesics in complexified space-time. We show how it can be canonically identified with the cotangent bundle of null infinity. BMS symmetries of null infinity lift to give a hamiltonian action on ambitwistor space, both in general dimension and in its twistorial 4-dimensional representation. General vertex operators arise from hamiltonians generating diffeomorphisms of ambitwistor space that determine the scattering from past to future null infinity. When a momentum eigenstate goes soft, the diffeomorphism defined by its leading and its subleading part are extended BMS generators realized in the world sheet conformal field theory of the ambitwistor string. More generally, this gives explicit perturbative correspondence between the scattering of null geodesics and that of the gravitational field via ambitwistor string theory.

Ambitwistor strings in 4-dimensions

We develop ambitwistor string theories for 4 dimensions to obtain new formulae for tree-level gauge and gravity amplitudes with arbitrary amounts of supersymmetry. Ambitwistor space is the space of complex null geodesics in complexified Minkowski space, and in contrast to earlier ambitwistor strings, we use twistors rather than vectors to represent this space. Although superficially similar to the original twistor string theories of Witten, Berkovits and Skinner, these theories differ in the assignment of worldsheet spins of the fields, rely on both twistor and dual twistor representatives for the vertex operators, and use the ambitwistor procedure for calculating correlation functions. Our models are much more flexible, no longer requiring maximal supersymmetry, and the resulting formulae for amplitudes are simpler, having substantially reduced moduli. These are supported on the solutions to the scattering equations refined according to MHV degree and can be checked by comparison with corresponding formulae of Witten and of Cachazo and Skinner.

Lattice Gerbe Theory

We formulate the theory of a 2-form gauge field on a Euclidean spacetime lattice. In this approach, the fundamental degrees of freedom live on the faces of the lattice, and the action can be constructed from the sum over Wilson surfaces associated with each fundamental cube of the lattice. If we take the gauge group to be $U(1)$, the theory reduces to the well-known abelian gerbe theory in the continuum limit. We also propose a very simple and natural non-abelian generalization with gauge group $U(N) \times U(N)$, which gives rise to $U(N)$ Yang-Mills theory upon dimensional reduction. Formulating the theory on a lattice has several other advantages. In particular, it is possible to compute many observables, such as the expectation value of Wilson surfaces, analytically at strong coupling and numerically for any value of the coupling.

Scattering Amplitudes of Massive N=2 Gauge Theories in Three Dimensions

We study the scattering amplitudes of mass-deformed Chern-Simons theories and Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theories with N=2 supersymmetry in three dimensions. In particular, we derive the on-shell supersymmetry algebras which underlie the scattering matrices of these theories. We then compute various 3 and 4-point on-shell tree-level amplitudes in these theories. For the mass-deformed Chern-Simons theory, odd-point amplitudes vanish and we find that all of the 4-point amplitudes can be encoded elegantly in superamplitudes. For the Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory, we obtain all of the 4-point tree-level amplitudes using a combination of perturbative techniques and algebraic constraints and we comment on difficulties related to computing amplitudes with external gauge fields using Feynman diagrams. Finally, we propose a BCFW recursion relation for mass-deformed theories in three dimensions and discuss the applicability of this proposal to mass-deformed N=2 theories.

From dlogs to dilogs; the super Yang-Mills MHV amplitude revisited

Recently, loop integrands for certain Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes and correlation functions have been shown to be systematically expressible in dlog form, raising the possibility that these loop integrals can be performed directly without Feynman parameters. We do so here to give a new description of the planar 1-loop MHV amplitude in N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory. We explicitly incorporate the standard Feynman i epsilon prescription into the integrands. We find that the generic MHV diagram contributing to the 1-loop MHV amplitude, known as Kermit, is dual conformal invariant up to the choice of reference twistor explicit in our axial gauge (the generic MHV diagram was already known to be finite). The new formulae for the amplitude are nontrivially related to previous ones in the literature. The divergent diagrams are evaluated using mass regularization. Our techniques extend directly to higher loop diagrams, and we illustrate this by sketching the evaluation of a non-trivial 2-loop example. We expect this to lead to a simple and efficient method for computing amplitudes and correlation functions with less supersymmetry and without the assumption of planarity.

From the Holomorphic Wilson Loop to `d log' Loop-Integrands of Super-Yang-Mills Amplitudes

The S-matrix for planar N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory can be computed as the correlation function for a holomorphic polygonal Wilson loop in twistor space. In an axial gauge, this leads to the construction of the all-loop integrand via MHV diagrams in twistor space. We show that at MHV, this formulation leads directly to expressions for loop integrands in d log form; i.e., the integrand is a product of exterior derivatives of logarithms of rational functions. For higher MHV degree, it is in d log form multiplied by delta functions. The parameters appearing in the d log form arise geometrically as the coordinates of insertion points of propagators on the holomorphic Wilson loop or on MHV vertices. We discuss a number of examples at one and two loops and give a preliminary discussion of the evaluation of the 1-loop MHV amplitude.

Amplitudes of 3d Yang Mills Theory

This paper studies various properties of amplitudes in 3d super Yang Mills theory. First we explain how to obtain the amplitudes of 3d super Yang Mills theories from 4d super Yang Mills theories and obtain their helicity structure. Next, we use a 3d BFCW recursion relation to show that the tree amplitudes and loop integrands of maximal 3d super Yang Mills have dual conformal covariance (although not invariance, so that the amplitudes themselves are not dual conformal). Finally, we argue that the one-loop amplitudes of maximal 3d super Yang-Mills can be reduced to scalar box diagrams and evaluate these diagrams using dimensional regularization. We find that the one-loop MHV amplitudes vanish and the one-loop non-MHV amplitudes are finite.

Integrability of N = 6 Chern-Simons Theory

In 2008, Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis, and Maldacena (ABJM) discovered a three-dimensional Chern-Simons theory with N = 6 supersymmetry and conjectured that in a certain limit, this theory is dual to type IIA string theory on AdS4xCP3. Since then, a great deal of evidence has been accumulated which suggests that the ABJM theory is integrable in the planar limit. Integrability is a very useful property that allows many physical observables, such as anomalous dimensions and scattering amplitudes, to be computed efficiently. In the first half of this thesis, we will explain how to use integrabilty to compute the anomalous dimensions of long, single-trace operators in the ABJM theory. In particular, we will describe how to compute them at weak coupling using a Bethe Ansatz, and how to compute them at strong coupling using string theory. The latter approach involves using algebraic curve and world-sheet techniques to compute the energies of string states dual to gauge theory operators. In the second half of this thesis, we will discuss integrability from the point of view of on-shell scattering amplitudes in the ABJM theory. In particular, we will describe how to parameterize the amplitudes in terms of supertwistors and how to relate higher-point tree-level amplitudes to lower-point tree-level amplitudes using a recursion relation. We will also explain how this recursion relation can be used to show that all tree-level amplitudes of the ABJM theory are invariant under dual superconformal symmetry. This symmetry is hidden from the point of the action and implies that the theory has Yangian symmetry, which is a key feature of integrability. This thesis is mainly based on the material in [101], [83], and [84].

Tree-level Recursion Relation and Dual Superconformal Symmetry of the ABJM Theory

We propose a recursion relation for tree-level scattering amplitudes in three-dimensional Chern-Simons-matter theories. The recursion relation involves a complex deformation of momenta which generalizes the BCFW-deformation used in higher dimensions. Using background field methods, we show that all tree-level superamplitudes of the ABJM theory vanish for large deformations, establishing the validity of the recursion formula. Furthermore, we use the recursion relation to compute six-point and eight-point component amplitudes and match them with independent computations based on Feynman diagrams or the Grassmannian integral formula. As an application of the recursion relation, we prove that all tree-level amplitudes of the ABJM theory have dual superconformal symmetry. Using generalized unitarity methods, we extend this symmetry to the cut-constructible parts of the loop amplitudes.

Amplitudes of 3D and 6D Maximal Superconformal Theories in Supertwistor Space

We use supertwistor space to construct scattering amplitudes of maximal superconformal theories in three and six dimensions. In both cases, the constraints of superconformal invariance and rationality imply that the three-point amplitude vanishes on-shell, which constrains the four-point amplitude to have vanishing residues in all channels. In three dimensions, we find a unique solution for the four-point amplitude and demonstrate that it agrees with the component result in the BLG theory. This suggests that BLG is the unique three-dimensional theory with classical OSp(8|4) symmetry that admits a Lagrangian description. We also show that one can derive the four-point amplitude of the ABJM theory from our N=8 result by reducing the supersymmetry, which implies that the tree-level Yangian symmetry recently found in ABJM is also present in BLG. In six dimensions, we find that the consistency conditions imply that all tree-level amplitudes vanish. This leads us to conjecture that an interacting six-dimensional theory with classical OSp(8|4) symmetry does not have a Lagrangian description, local or nonlocal, unless the (2,0) tensor multiplets are supplemented by additional degrees of freedom.

Dual Superconformal Symmetry of N=6 Chern-Simons Theory

We demonstrate that the four and six-point tree-level amplitudes of N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory (ABJM) enjoy OSp(6|4) dual superconformal symmetry if one enlarges the dual superspace to include three additional Grassmann-even coordinates which correspond to an abelian isometry of CP3. The inclusion of these coordinates enables us to match the nontrivial dual superconformal generators with level-one Yangian generators when acting on on-shell amplitudes. We also discuss some implications of dual conformal symmetry for loop-level amplitudes.

One-Loop Corrections to Type IIA String Theory in AdS4 x CP3

We study various methods for computing the one-loop correction to the energy of classical solutions to type IIA string theory in AdS4 x CP3. This involves computing the spectrum of fluctuations and then adding up the fluctuation frequencies. We focus on two classical solutions with support in CP3: a rotating point-particle and a circular spinning string with two angular momenta equal to J. For each of these solutions, we compute the spectrum of fluctuations using two techniques, known as the algebraic curve approach and the world-sheet approach. If we use the same prescription for adding fluctuation frequencies that was used for type IIB string theory in AdS5 x S5, then we find that the world-sheet spectrum gives convergent one-loop corrections but the algebraic curve spectrum gives divergent ones. On the other hand, we find a new summation prescription which gives finite results when applied to both the algebraic curve and world-sheet spectra. Naively, this gives three predictions for the one-loop correction to the spinning string energy (one from the algebraic curve and two from the world-sheet), however we find that in the large-j limit (where j=J/sqrt(2pi^2 lambda)), the j^(-2n) terms in all three cases agree. We therefore obtain a unique prediction for the one-loop correction to the spinning string energy.
