S-curves in Polynomial External Fields

Curves in the complex plane that satisfy the S-property were first introduced by Stahl and they were further studied by Gonchar and Rakhmanov in the 1980s. Rakhmanov recently showed the existence of curves with the S-property in a harmonic external field by means of a max-min variational problem in logarithmic potential theory. This is done in a fairly general setting, which however does not include the important special case of an external field given by the real part of a polynomial of degree greater than or equal to 2. In this paper we give a detailed proof of the existence of a curve with the S-property in the external field given by the real part of a polynomial V, within the collection of all curves that connect two or more pre-assigned directions at infinity in which the real part of V grows. Our method of proof is very much based on the works of Rakhmanov on the max-min variational problem and of Martínez-Finkelshtein and Rakhmanov on critical measures.

The tacnode Riemann-Hilbert problem

The tacnode Riemann-Hilbert problem is a 4 x 4 matrix valued RH problem that appears in the description of the local behavior of two touching groups of non-intersecting Brownian motions. The same RH problem was also found by Duits and Geudens to describe a new critical regime in the two-matrix model. Delvaux gave integral representations for some of the entries of the 4 x 4 matrix. We complement this work by presenting integral representations for all of the entries. As a consequence we give an explicit formula for the Duits-Geudens critical kernel.

Zero distribution of complex orthogonal polynomials with respect to exponential weights

We study the limiting zero distribution of orthogonal polynomials with respect to some particular exponential weights exp(-nV(z)) along contours in the complex plane. We are especially interested in the question under which circumstances the zeros of the orthogonal polynomials accumulate on a single analytic arc (one cut case), and in which cases they do not. In a family of cubic polynomial potentials V(z) = - iz^3/3 + iKz, we determine the precise values of K for which we have the one cut case. We also prove the one cut case for a monomial quintic V(z) = - iz^5/5 on a contour that is symmetric in the imaginary axis.

The global parametrix in the Riemann-Hilbert steepest descent analysis for orthogonal polynomials

In the application of the Deift-Zhou steepest descent method to the Riemann-Hilbert problem for orthogonal polynomials, a model Riemann-Hilbert problem that appears in the multi-cut case is solved with the use of hyperelliptic theta functions. We present here an alternative approach which uses meromorphic differentials instead of theta functions to construct the solution of the model Riemann-Hilbert problem.

Asymptotics of non-intersecting Brownian motions and a 4 x 4 Riemann-Hilbert problem

We consider n one-dimensional Brownian motions, such that n/2 Brownian motions start at time t=0 in the starting point a and end at time t=1 in the endpoint b and the other n/2 Brownian motions start at time t=0 at the point -a and end at time t=1 in the point -b, conditioned that the n Brownian paths do not intersect in the whole time interval (0,1). The correlation functions of the positions of the non-intersecting Brownian motions have a determinantal form with a kernel that is expressed in terms of multiple Hermite polynomials of mixed type. We analyze this kernel in the large n limit for the case ab<1/2. We find that the limiting mean density of the positions of the Brownian motions is supported on one or two intervals and that the correlation kernel has the usual scaling limits from random matrix theory, namely the sine kernel in the bulk and the Airy kernel near the edges.

Painleve I asymptotics for orthogonal polynomials with respect to a varying quartic weight

We study polynomials that are orthogonal with respect to a varying quartic weight \exp(-N(x^2/2+tx^4/4)) for t<0, where the orthogonality takes place on certain contours in the complex plane. Inspired by developments in 2D quantum gravity, Fokas, Its, and Kitaev, showed that there exists a critical value for t around which the asymptotics of the recurrence coefficients are described in terms of exactly specified solutions of the Painleve I equation. In this paper, we present an alternative and more direct proof of this result by means of the Deift/Zhou steepest descent analysis of the Riemann-Hilbert problem associated with the polynomials. Moreover, we extend the analysis to non-symmetric combinations of contours. Special features in the steepest descent analysis are a modified equililbrium problem and the use of Psi-functions for the Painleve I equation in the construction of the local parametrix.

Universality for eigenvalue correlations from the modified Jacobi unitary ensemble

The eigenvalue correlations of random matrices from the Jacobi Unitary Ensemble have a known asymptotic behavior as their size tends to infinity. In the bulk of the spectrum the behavior is described in terms of the sine kernel, and at the edge in terms of the Bessel kernel. We will prove that this behavior persists for the Modified Jacobi Unitary Ensemble. This generalization of the Jacobi Unitary Ensemble is associated with the modified Jacobi weight w(x)=(1-x)^α(1+x)^βh(x) where the extra factor h is assumed to be real analytic and strictly positive on [-1,1]. We use the connection with the orthogonal polynomials with respect to the modified Jacobi weight, and recent results on strong asymptotics derived by K.T-R McLaughlin, W. Van Assche and the authors.
