A Convergent Numerical Scheme for Scattering of Aperiodic Waves from Periodic Surfaces Based on the Floquet-Bloch Transform

Periodic surface structures are nowadays standard building blocks of optical devices. If such structures are illuminated by aperiodic time-harmonic incident waves as, e.g., Gaussian beams, the resulting surface scattering problem must be formulated in an unbounded layer including the periodic surface structure. An obvious recipe to avoid the need to discretize this problem in an unbounded domain is to set up an equivalent system of quasiperiodic scattering problems in a single (bounded) periodicity cell via the Floquet-Bloch transform. The solution to the original surface scattering problem then equals the inverse Floquet-Bloch transform applied to the family of solutions to the quasiperiodic problems, which simply requires to integrate these solutions in the quasiperiodicity parameter. A numerical scheme derived from this representation hence completely avoids the need to tackle differential equations on unbounded domains. In this paper, we provide rigorous convergence analysis and error bounds for such a scheme when applied to a two-dimensional model problem, relying upon a quadrature-based approximation to the inverse Floquet-Bloch transform and finite element approximations to quasiperiodic scattering problems. Our analysis essentially relies upon regularity results for the family of solutions to the quasiperiodic scattering problems in suitable mixed Sobolev spaces. We illustrate our error bounds as well as efficiency of the numerical scheme via several numerical examples.

A Factorization Method and Monotonicity Bounds in Inverse Medium Scattering for Contrasts with Fixed Sign on the Boundary

We generalize the factorization method for inverse medium scattering using a particular factorization of the difference of two far field operators. Whilst the factorization method been used so far mainly to identify the shape of a scatterer's support, we show that factorizations based on Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators can be used to compute bounds for numerical values of the medium on the boundary of its support. To this end, we generalize ideas from inside-outside duality to obtain a monotonicity principle that allows for alternative uniqueness proofs for particular inverse scattering problems (e.g., when obstacles are present inside the medium). This monotonicity principle indeed is our most important technical tool: It further directly shows that the boundary values of the medium's contrast function are uniquely determined by the corresponding far field operator. Our particular factorization of far field operators additionally implies that the factorization method rigorously characterizes the support of an inhomogeneous medium if the contrast function takes merely positive or negative values on the boundary of its support, independent of the contrast's values inside its support. Finally, the monotonicity principle yields a simple algorithm to compute upper and lower bounds for these boundary values, assuming the support of the contrast is known. Numerical experiments show feasibility of a resulting numerical algorithm.

A Floquet-Bloch transform based numerical method for scattering from locally perturbed periodic surfaces

Scattering problems for periodic structures have been studied a lot in the past few years. A main idea for numerical solution methods is to reduce such problems to one periodicity cell. In contrast to periodic settings, scattering from locally perturbed periodic surfaces is way more challenging. In this paper, we introduce and analyze a new numerical method to simulate scattering from locally perturbed periodic structures based on the Bloch transform. As this transform is applied only in periodic domains, we firstly rewrite the scattering problem artificially in a periodic domain. With the help of the Bloch transform, we secondly transform this problem into a coupled family of quasiperiodic problems posed in the periodicity cell. A numerical scheme then approximates the family of quasiperiodic solutions (we rely on the finite element method) and backtransformation provides the solution to the original scattering problem. In this paper, we give convergence analysis and error bounds for a Galerkin discretization in the spatial and the quasiperiodicity's unit cells. We also provide a simple and efficient way for implementation that does not require numerical integration in the quasiperiodicity, together with numerical examples for scattering from locally perturbed periodic surfaces computed by this scheme.

On the determination of sets supporting unknown sources for the wave equation from radiated fields

Given near or far field wave measurements generated by some unknown time- and space-dependent acoustic source, we seek to rapidly determine a domain in space-time, as small as possible, that contains the support of a source radiating these measurements. As for any inverse source problem, this task is challenging without further restrictions on the source, particularly due to the infinite-dimensional space of silent sources radiating zero measurements. This first causes non-uniqueness, that is, the source in general cannot be determined uniquely, and second prevents the computation of, e. g., a largest set that must contain the support of the source. To determine small domains containing the support of some source that radiates given measurements, we exploit that solutions to the wave equation propagate along characteristics. We further indicate restrictions on the support of a source that allow to theoretically characterize this support uniquely from near or far field measurements.

The Floquet-Bloch Transform and Scattering from Locally Perturbed Periodic Surfaces

We use the Floquet-Bloch transform to reduce variational formulations of surface scattering problems for the Helmholtz equation from periodic and locally perturbed periodic surfaces to equivalent variational problems formulated on bounded domains. To this end, we establish various mapping properties of that transform between suitable weighted Sobolev spaces on periodic strip-like domains and coupled families of quasiperiodic Sobolev spaces. Our analysis shows in particular that the decay of solutions to surface scattering problems from locally perturbed periodic surfaces is precisely characterized by the smoothness of its Bloch transform in the quasiperiodicity.

The Time Domain Lippmann-Schwinger Equation and Convolution Quadrature

We consider time domain acoustic scattering from a penetrable medium with a variable sound speed. This problem can be reduced to solving a time domain volume Lippmann-Schwinger integral equation. Using convolution quadrature in time and trigonometric collocation in space we can compute an approximate solution. We prove that the time domain Lippmann-Schwinger equation has a unique solution and prove conditional convergence and error estimates for the fully discrete solution for smooth sound speeds. Preliminary numerical results show that the method behaves well even for discontinuous sound speeds.

A Trigonometric Galerkin Method for Volume Integral Equations Arising in TM Grating Scattering

Transverse magnetic (TM) scattering of an electromagnetic wave from a periodic dielectric diffraction grating can mathematically be described by a volume integral equation. This volume integral equation, however, in general fails to feature a weakly singular integral operator. Nevertheless, after a suitable periodization, the involved integral operator can be efficiently evaluated on trigonometric polynomials using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and iterative methods can be used to solve the integral equation. Using Fredholm theory, we prove that a trigonometric Galerkin discretization applied to the periodized integral equation converges with optimal order to the solution of the scattering problem. The main advantage of this FFT-based discretization scheme is that the resulting numerical method is particularly easy to implement, avoiding for instance the need to evaluate quasiperiodic Green's functions.

On Uniqueness in Electromagnetic Scattering from Biperiodic Structures

Consider time-harmonic electromagnetic wave scattering from a biperiodic dielectric structure mounted on a perfectly conducting plate in three dimensions. Given that uniqueness of solution holds, existence of solution follows from a well-known Fredholm framework for the variational formulation of the problem in a suitable Sobolev space. In this paper, we derive a Rellich identity for a solution to this variational problem under suitable smoothness conditions on the material parameter. Under additional non-trapping assumptions on the material parameter, this identity allows us to establish uniqueness of solution for all wave numbers.

Volume Integral Equations for Scattering from Anisotropic Diffraction Gratings

We analyze electromagnetic scattering of TM polarized waves from a diffraction grating consisting of a periodic, anisotropic, and possibly negative-index dielectric material. Such scattering problems are important for the modelization of, e.g., light propagation in nano-optical components and metamaterials. The periodic scattering problem can be reformulated as a strongly singular volume integral equation, a technique that attracts continuous interest in the engineering community, but rarely received rigorous theoretic treatment. In this paper we prove new (generalized) Gårding inequalities in weighted and unweighted Sobolev spaces for the strongly singular integral equation. These inequalities also hold for materials for which the real part takes negative values inside the diffraction grating, independently of the value of the imaginary part.
