Unique Word Channel Estimation for Oversampled OTFS

Practical aspects of orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS), such as channel estimation and its performance in fractional delay-Doppler (DD) channels, are a lively topic in the OTFS community. Oversampling and pulse shaping are also discussed in the existing literature, but not in the context of channel estimation. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first to address the problem of data-to-pilot and vice versa energy leakage caused by oversampling and pulse shaping in OTFS. Theoretical analysis is performed on an oversampled, pulse-shaped OTFS implementing the embedded pilot channel estimation technique, revealing a trade-off between the amount of energy leakage and excess bandwidth introduced by the pulse shape. Next, a novel variant of OTFS is introduced, called UW-OTFS, which is designed to overcome the leakage problem by placing the pilot in the oversampled time domain instead of the DD domain. The unique structure of UW-OTFS offers 36 percent higher spectral efficiency than the OTFS with embedded pilot. UW-OTFS also outperforms traditional OTFS in terms of bit error ratio and out-of-band emissions.

Downlink Precoding for FBMC-based Massive MIMO with Imperfect Channel Reciprocity

In this paper, a practical precoding method for the downlink of filter bank multicarrier-based (FBMC-based) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is developed. The proposed method includes a two-stage precoder consisting of a fractionally spaced prefilter (FSP) per subcarrier for flattening/equalizing the channel across the subcarrier band, followed by a conventional precoder whose goal is to concentrate the signals of different users at their spatial locations. This way, each user receives only the intended information. In this paper, we take note that channel reciprocity may not hold perfectly in practical scenarios due to the mismatch of radio chains in uplink and downlink. Additionally, channel state information (CSI) at the base station may not be perfectly known. This, together with imperfect channel reciprocity can lead to detrimental effects on the downlink precoder performance. We theoretically analyze the performance of the proposed precoder in the presence of imperfect CSI and channel reciprocity calibration errors. This leads to an effective method for compensating these effects. Finally, we numerically evaluate the performance of the proposed precoder. Our results show that the proposed precoder leads to an excellent performance when benchmarked against OFDM.

Joint CFO and Channel Estimation for RIS-aided Multi-user Massive MIMO Systems

Accurate channel estimation is essential to achieve the performance gains promised by the use of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) in wireless communications. In the uplink of multi-user orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems, synchronization errors such as carrier frequency offsets (CFOs) can significantly degrade the channel estimation performance. This becomes more critical in RIS-aided communications, as even a small channel estimation error leads to a significant performance loss. Motivated by this, we propose a joint CFO and channel estimation method for RIS-aided multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Our proposed pilot structure allows accurate estimation of the CFOs without multi-user interference (MUI), using the same pilot resources for both CFO estimation and channel estimation. For joint estimation of multiple users' CFOs, a correlation-based approach is devised using the received signals at all BS antennas. Using least-squares (LS) estimation with the obtained CFO values, the channels of all users are jointly estimated. For optimization of the RIS phase shifts at the data transmission stage, we propose a projected gradient method (PGM). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method provides an improvement in the normalized mean-square error (NMSE) of channel estimation as well as in the bit error rate (BER) performance.

OTFS Without CP in Massive MIMO: Breaking Doppler Limitations with TR-MRC and Windowing

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation has recently emerged as an effective waveform to tackle the linear time-varying channels. In OTFS literature, approximately constant channel gains for every group of samples within each OTFS block are assumed. This leads to limitations for OTFS on the maximum Doppler frequency that it can tolerate. Additionally, presence of cyclic prefix (CP) in OTFS signal limits the flexibility in adjusting its parameters to improve its robustness against channel time variations. Therefore, in this paper, we study the possibility of removing the CP overhead from OTFS and breaking its Doppler limitations through multiple antenna processing in the large antenna regime. We asymptotically analyze the performance of time-reversal maximum ratio combining (TR-MRC) for OTFS without CP. We show that doubly dispersive channel effects average out in the large antenna regime when the maximum Doppler shift is within OTFS limitations. However, for considerably large Doppler shifts exceeding OTFS limitations, a residual Doppler effect remains. Our asymptotic derivations reveal that this effect converges to scaling of the received symbols in delay dimension with the samples of a Bessel function that depends on the maximum Doppler shift. Hence, we propose a novel residual Doppler correction (RDC) windowing technique that can break the Doppler limitations of OTFS and lead to a performance close to that of the linear time-invariant channels. Finally, we confirm the validity of our claims through simulations.

Low-Complexity Joint CFO and Channel Estimation for RIS-aided OFDM Systems

Accurate channel estimation is essential for achieving the performance gains offered by reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided wireless communications. A variety of channel estimation methods have been proposed for such systems; however, none of the existing methods takes into account the effect of synchronization errors such as carrier frequency offset (CFO). In general, CFO can significantly degrade channel estimation performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Motivated by this, we investigate the effect of CFO on channel estimation for RIS-aided OFDM systems. Furthermore, we propose a joint CFO and channel impulse response (CIR) estimation method for these systems. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method, and also demonstrate that the use of time-domain rather than frequency-domain estimation in this context results in an improvement in the mean-squared error (MSE) performance of channel estimation as well as a significantly lower overall computational complexity.

Resource Allocation for Mixed Numerology NOMA

6G wireless networks will require the flexibility to accommodate an extremely diverse set of service types. This necessitates the use of mixed numerologies to accommodate different quality of service (QoS) requirements. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) techniques can potentially be used to accommodate users with different numerologies while also gaining the performance benefits associated with NOMA. To achieve the full performance benefits of a mixed numerology NOMA (MN-NOMA) system, resource allocation among the users is paramount. However, the coexistence of mixed numerologies changes the nature of the interference that each user experiences. This means that techniques used in single-numerology NOMA (SN-NOMA) are no longer sufficient. In light of this, we approach the problem of optimizing subcarrier and power allocation for maximizing the spectral efficiency of MN-NOMA while considering a minimum rate constraint for each user. In this letter, we propose a two-stage sub-optimal approach to solve the problem. We present numerical results which show the superiority of our proposed method over existing benchmark schemes in both spectral efficiency and fairness.

Blind Channel Estimation for Massive MIMO: A Deep Learning Assisted Approach

Large scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) or Massive MIMO is one of the pivotal technologies for future wireless networks. However, the performance of massive MIMO systems heavily relies on accurate channel estimation. While the acquisition of channel state information (CSI) in such systems requires an increasingly large amount of training overhead as the number of users grows. To tackle this issue, in this paper, we propose a deep learning assisted blind channel estimation technique for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based massive MIMO systems. We prove that by exploiting the asymptotic orthogonality of the massive MIMO channels, the channel distortion can be averaged out without the prior knowledge of channel impulse responses, and after some mathematical manipulation, different users transmitted data symbols can be extracted. Thus, by deploying a denoising convolutional neural network algorithm (DnCNN), we mitigate a remaining channel and noise effect to accurately detect the transmitted data symbols at the channel sounding stage. Using the detected data symbols as virtual pilots, we estimate the CSI of all the users at each BS antennas. Our simulation results testify the efficacy of our proposed technique and demonstrate that it can provide a mean square error (MSE) performance which coincides with that of the data-aided channel estimation technique.

Evolving Intelligent Reflector Surface towards 6G for Public Health: Application in Airborne Virus Detection

While metasurface based intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) are an important emerging technology for future generations of wireless connectivity in its own right, the plans for the mass deployment of these surfaces motivate the question of their integration with other new and emerging technologies that would require mass proliferation. This question of integration and the vision of future communication systems as an invaluable component for public health motivated our new concept of Intelligent Reflector-Viral Detectors (IR-VD). In this novel scheme, we propose deployment of intelligent reflectors with strips of receptor-based viral detectors placed between the reflective surface tiles. Our proposed approach encodes information of the virus by flicking the angle of the reflected beams, using time variations between the beam deviations to represent the messages. This information includes the presence of the virus, its location and load size. The paper presents simulation to demonstrate the encoding process based on varying quantity of virus that have bound onto the IR-VD.

Interference and Rate Analysis of Multinumerology NOMA

5G communication systems and beyond are envisioned to support an extremely diverse set of use cases with different performance requirements. These different requirements necessitate the use of different numerologies for increased flexibility. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) can potentially attain this flexibility by superimposing user signals while offering improved spectral efficiency (SE). However, users with different numerologies have different symbol durations. When combined with NOMA, this changes the nature of the interference the users impose on each other. This paper investigates a multinumerology NOMA (MN-NOMA) scheme using successive interference cancellation (SIC) as an enabler for coexistence of users with with different numerologies. Analytical expressions for the inter-numerology interference (INI) experienced by each user at the receiver are derived, where mean-squared error (MSE) is the metric used to quantify INI. Using the MSE expressions, we analytically derive achievable rates for each user in the MN-NOMA system. These expressions are then evaluated and used to compare the SE performance of MN-NOMA with that of its single-numerology counterpart. The proposed scheme can achieve the desired flexibility in supporting diverse use cases in future wireless networks. The scheme also gains the SE benefits of NOMA compared to both multinumerology and single numerology orthogonal multiple access (OMA) schemes.

Spectrally Efficient Pilot Structure and Channel Estimation for Multiuser FBMC Systems

In this paper, we consider channel estimation problem in the uplink of filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) systems. We propose a pilot structure and a joint multiuser channel estimation method for FBMC. Opposed to the available solutions in the literature, our proposed technique does not rely on the flat-channel condition over each subcarrier band or any requirement for placing guard symbols between different users' pilots. Our proposed pilot structure reduces the training overhead by interleaving the users' pilots in time and frequency. Thus, we can accommodate a larger number of training signals within the same bandwidth and improve the spectral efficiency. Furthermore, this pilot structure inherently leads to a reduced peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) compared with the solutions that use all the subcarriers for training. We analytically derive the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) and mean square error (MSE) expressions for our proposed method. We show that these expressions are the same. This confirms the optimality of our proposed method, which is numerically evaluated through simulations. Relying on its improved spectral efficiency, our proposed method can serve a large number of users and relax pilot contamination problem in FBMC-based massive MIMO systems. This is corroborated through simulations in terms of sum-rate performance for both single cell and multicell scenarios.

5G Waveforms for Overlay D2D Communications: Effects of Time-Frequency Misalignment

This paper analyses a scenario where a Device-To-Device (D2D) pair coexists with an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based incumbent network. D2D transmitter communicates in parts of spectrum left free by cellular users, while respecting a given spectral mask. The D2D pair is misaligned in time and frequency with the cellular users. Furthermore, the D2D pair utilizes alternative waveforms to OFDM proposed for 5G. In this study, we show that it is not worth synchronising the D2D pair in time with respect to the cellular users. Indeed, the interference injected into the incumbent network has small variations with respect to time misalignment. We provide interference tables that encompass both time and frequency misalignment. We use them to analyse the maximum rate achievable by the D2D pair when it uses different waveforms. Then, we present numerical results showing what waveform should be utilized by the D2D pair according to the time-frequency resources that are not used by the incumbent network. Our results show that the delay induced by linearly convolved waveforms make them hardly applicable to short time windows, but that they dominate OFDM for long transmissions, mainly in the case where cellular users are very sensitive to interference.

Coexistence of OFDM and FBMC for Underlay D2D Communication in 5G Networks

Device-to-device (D2D) communication is being heralded as an important part of the solution to the capacity problem in future networks, and is expected to be natively supported in 5G. Given the high network complexity and required signalling overhead associated with achieving synchronization in D2D networks, it is necessary to study asynchronous D2D communications. In this paper, we consider a scenario whereby asynchronous D2D communication underlays an OFDMA macro-cell in the uplink. Motivated by the superior performance of new waveforms with increased spectral localization in the presence of frequency and time misalignments, we compare the system-level performance of a set-up for when D2D pairs use either OFDM or FBMC/OQAM. We first demonstrate that inter-D2D interference, resulting from misaligned communications, plays a significant role in clustered D2D topologies. We then demonstrate that the resource allocation procedure can be simplified when D2D pairs use FBMC/OQAM, since the high spectral localization of FBMC/OQAM results in negligible inter-D2D interference. Specifically, we identify that FBMC/OQAM is best suited to scenarios consisting of small, densely populated D2D clusters located near the encompassing cell's edge.

Massive MIMO and Waveform Design for 5th Generation Wireless Communication Systems

This article reviews existing related work and identifies the main challenges in the key 5G area at the intersection of waveform design and large-scale multiple antenna systems, also known as Massive MIMO. The property of self-equalization is introduced for Filter Bank Multicarrier (FBMC)-based Massive MIMO, which can reduce the number of subcarriers required by the system. It is also shown that the blind channel tracking property of FBMC can be used to address pilot contamination -- one of the main limiting factors of Massive MIMO systems. Our findings shed light into and motivate for an entirely new research line towards a better understanding of waveform design with emphasis on FBMC-based Massive MIMO networks.

Time Reversal with Post-Equalization for OFDM without CP in Massive MIMO

This paper studies the possibility of eliminating the redundant cyclic prefix (CP) of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in massive multiple-input multiple-output systems. The absence of CP increases the bandwidth efficiency in expense of intersymbol interference (ISI) and intercarrier interference (ICI). It is known that in massive MIMO, different types of interference fade away as the number of base station (BS) antennas tends to infinity. In this paper, we investigate if the channel distortions in the absence of CP are averaged out in the large antenna regime. To this end, we analytically study the performance of the conventional maximum ratio combining (MRC) and realize that there always remains some residual interference leading to saturation of signal to interference (SIR). This saturation of SIR is quantified through mathematical equations. Moreover, to resolve the saturation problem, we propose a technique based on time-reversal MRC with zero forcing multiuser detection (TR-ZF). Thus, the SIR of our proposed TR-ZF does not saturate and is a linear function of the number of BS antennas. We also show that TR-ZF only needs one OFDM demodulator per user irrespective of the number of BS antennas; reducing the BS signal processing complexity significantly. Finally, we corroborate our claims as well as analytical results through simulations.

Frequency Spreading Equalization in Multicarrier Massive MIMO

Application of filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) as an effective method for signaling over massive MIMO channels has been recently proposed. This paper further expands the application of FBMC to massive MIMO by applying frequency spreading equalization (FSE) to these channels. FSE allows us to achieve a more accurate equalization. Hence, higher number of bits per symbol can be transmitted and the bandwidth of each subcarrier can be widened. Widening the bandwidth of each subcarrier leads to (i) higher bandwidth efficiency; (ii) lower complexity; (iii) lower sensitivity to carrier frequency offset (CFO); (iv) reduced peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR); and (iv) reduced latency. All these appealing advantages have a direct impact on the digital as well as analog circuitry that is needed for the system implementation. In this paper, we develop the mathematical formulation of the minimum mean square error (MMSE) FSE for massive MIMO systems. This analysis guides us to decide on the number of subcarriers that will be sufficient for practical channel models.

Impact of Timing and Frequency Offsets on Multicarrier Waveform Candidates for 5G

This paper presents a study of the candidate waveforms for 5G when they are subject to timing and carrier frequency offset. These waveforms are: orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM), universal filtered multicarrier (UFMC), circular filter bank multicarrier (C-FBMC), and linear filter bank multicarrier (FBMC). We are particularly interested in multiple access interference (MAI) when a number of users transmit their signals to a base station in an asynchronous or a quasi-synchronous manner. We identify the source of MAI in these waveforms and present some numerical analysis that confirm our findings. The goal of this study is to answer the following question, "Which one of the 5G candidate waveforms has more relaxed synchronization requirements?".

Low Complexity Transceiver Design for GFDM

Due to its attractive properties, generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) is recently being discussed as a candidate waveform for the fifth generation of wireless communication systems (5G). GFDM is introduced as a generalized form of the widely used orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation scheme and since it uses only one cyclic prefix (CP) for a group of symbols rather than a CP per symbol, it is more bandwidth efficient than OFDM. In this paper, we propose novel transceiver structures for GFDM by taking advantage of the particular structure in the modulation matrix. Our proposed transmitter is based on modulation matrix sparsification through application of fast Fourier transform (FFT) to reduce the implementation complexity. A unified receiver structure for matched filter (MF), zero forcing (ZF) and minimum mean square error (MMSE) receivers is also derived. The proposed receiver techniques harness the special block circulant property of the matrices involved in the demodulation stage to reduce the computational cost of the system implementation. We have derived the closed forms for the ZF and MMSE receiver filters. Additionally, our algorithms do not incur any performance loss as they maintain the optimal performance. The computational costs of our proposed techniques are analyzed in detail and are compared with the existing solutions that are known to have the lowest complexity. It is shown that through application of our transceiver structure a substantial amount of computational complexity reduction can be achieved.

Filter Bank Multicarrier for Massive MIMO

This paper introduces filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) as a potential candidate in the application of massive MIMO communication. It also points out the advantages of FBMC over OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) in the application of massive MIMO. The absence of cyclic prefix in FBMC increases the bandwidth efficiency. In addition, FBMC allows carrier aggregation straightforwardly. Self-equalization, a property of FBMC in massive MIMO that is introduced in this paper, has the impact of reducing (i) complexity; (ii) sensitivity to carrier frequency offset (CFO); (iii) peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR); (iv) system latency; and (v) increasing bandwidth efficiency. The numerical results that corroborate these claims are presented.

Interference Localization for Uplink OFDMA Systems in Presence of CFOs

Multiple carrier frequency offsets (CFOs) present in the uplink of orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems adversely affect subcarrier orthogonality and impose a serious performance loss. In this paper, we propose the application of time domain receiver windowing to concentrate the leakage caused by CFOs to a few adjacent subcarriers with almost no additional computational complexity. This allows us to approximate the interference matrix with a quasi-banded matrix by neglecting small elements outside a certain band which enables robust and computationally efficient signal detection. The proposed CFO compensation technique is applicable to all types of subcarrier assignment techniques. Simulation results show that the quasi-banded approximation of the interference matrix is accurate enough to provide almost the same bit error rate performance as that of the optimal solution. The excellent performance of our proposed method is also proven through running an experiment using our FPGA-based system setup.

Pilot Decontamination in CMT-based Massive MIMO Networks

Pilot contamination problem in massive MIMO networks operating in time-division duplex (TDD) mode can limit their expected capacity to a great extent. This paper addresses this problem in cosine modulated multitone (CMT) based massive MIMO networks; taking advantage of their so-called blind equalization property. We extend and apply the blind equalization technique from single antenna case to multi-cellular massive MIMO systems and show that it can remove the channel estimation errors (due to pilot contamination effect) without any need for cooperation between different cells or transmission of additional training information. Our numerical results advocate the efficacy of the proposed blind technique in improving the channel estimation accuracy and removal of the residual channel estimation errors caused by the users of the other cells.
