On the distribution of rational points on ramified covers of abelian varieties

We prove new results on the distribution of rational points on ramified covers of abelian varieties over finitely generated fields $k$ of characteristic zero. For example, given a ramified cover $π: X \to A$, where $A$ is an abelian variety over $k$ with a dense set of $k$-rational points, we prove that there is a finite-index coset $C \subset A(k)$ such that $π(X(k))$ is disjoint from $C$. Our results do not seem to be in the range of other methods available at present; they confirm predictions coming from Lang's conjectures on rational points, and also go in the direction of an issue raised by Serre regarding possible applications to the Inverse Galois Problem. Finally, the conclusions of our work may be seen as a sharp version of Hilbert's irreducibility theorem for abelian varieties.

Non-archimedean hyperbolicity and applications

Inspired by the work of Cherry, we introduce and study a new notion of Brody hyperbolicity for rigid analytic varieties over a non-archimedean field $K$ of characteristic zero. We use this notion of hyperbolicity to show the following algebraic statement: if a projective variety admits a non-constant morphism from an abelian variety, then so does any specialization of it. As an application of this result, we show that the moduli space of abelian varieties is $K$-analytically Brody hyperbolic in equal characteristic zero. These two results are predicted by the Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture on hyperbolic varieties and its natural analogues for non-archimedean hyperbolicity. Finally, we use Scholze's uniformization theorem to prove that the aforementioned moduli space satisfies a non-archimedean analogue of the "Theorem of the Fixed Part" in mixed characteristic.

Arithmetic hyperbolicity: automorphisms and persistence

We show that if the automorphism group of a projective variety is torsion, then it is finite. Motivated by Lang's conjecture on rational points of hyperbolic varieties, we use this to prove that a projective variety with only finitely many rational points has only finitely many automorphisms. Moreover, we investigate to what extent finiteness of $S$-integral points on a variety over a number field persists over finitely generated fields. To this end, we introduce the class of mildly bounded varieties and prove a general criterion for proving this persistence.

Finiteness properties of pseudo-hyperbolic varieties

Motivated by Lang-Vojta's conjecture, we show that the set of dominant rational self-maps of an algebraic variety over a number field with only finitely many rational points in any given number field is finite by combining Amerik's theorem for dynamical systems of infinite order with properties of Prokhorov-Shramov's notion of quasi-minimal models. We also prove a similar result in the geometric setting by using again Amerik's theorem and Prokhorov-Shramov's notion of quasi-minimal model, but also Weil's regularization theorem for birational self-maps and properties of dynamical degrees. Furthermore, in the geometric setting, we obtain an analogue of Kobayashi-Ochiai's finiteness result for varieties of general type, and thereby generalize Noguchi's theorem (formerly Lang's conjecture).

The Lang-Vojta conjectures on projective pseudo-hyperbolic varieties

These notes grew out of a mini-course given from May 13th to May 17th at UQAM in Montreal during a workshop on Diophantine Approximation and Value Distribution Theory. We start with an overview of Lang-Vojta's conjectures on pseudo-hyperbolic projective varieties. These conjectures relate various different notions of hyperbolicity. We begin with Brody hyperbolicity and discuss conjecturally related notions of hyperbolicity in arithmetic geometry and algebraic geometry in subsequent sections. We slowly work our way towards the most general version of Lang-Vojta's conjectures and provide a summary of all the conjectures, as well as a survey of recent progress.

Belyi's theorem for complete intersections of general type

We give a Belyi-type characterisation of smooth complete intersections of general type over $\mathbb{C}$ which can be defined over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$. Our proof uses the higher-dimensional analogue of the Shafarevich boundedness conjecture for families of canonically polarized varieties, finiteness results for maps to varieties of general type, and rigidity theorems for Lefschetz pencils of complete intersections.

The moduli of smooth hypersurfaces with level structure

We construct the moduli space of smooth hypersurfaces with level $N$ structure over $\mathbb{Z}[1/N]$. As an application we show that, for $N$ large enough, the stack of smooth hypersurfaces over $\mathbb{Z}[1/N]$ is uniformisable by a smooth affine scheme. To prove our results, we use the Lefschetz trace formula to show that automorphisms of smooth hypersurfaces act faithfully on their cohomology. We also prove a global Torelli theorem for smooth cubic threefolds over fields of odd characteristic.

Polynomial bounds for Arakelov invariants of Belyi curves

We explicitly bound the Faltings height of a curve over Q polynomially in its Belyi degree. Similar bounds are proven for three other Arakelov invariants: the discriminant, Faltings' delta invariant and the self-intersection of the dualizing sheaf. Our results allow us to explicitly bound Arakelov invariants of modular curves, Hurwitz curves and Fermat curves in terms of their genus. Moreover, as an application, we show that the Couveignes-Edixhoven-Bruin algorithm to compute coefficients of modular forms for congruence subgroups of SL2(Z) runs in polynomial time under the Riemann hypothesis for zeta-functions of number fields. This was known before only for certain congruence subgroups. Finally, we use our results to prove a conjecture of Edixhoven, de Jong and Schepers on the Faltings height of a cover of the projective line with fixed branch locus. Our proof uses Merkl's method for bounding Arakelov-Green's functions to deal with archimedean contributions. In the appendix, Peter Bruin proves an explicit version of Merkl's results.

Szpiro's small points conjecture for cyclic covers

Let $X$ be a smooth, projective and geometrically connected curve of genus at least two, defined over a number field. In 1984, Szpiro conjectured that $X$ has a "small point". In this paper we prove that if $X$ is a cyclic cover of prime degree of the projective line, then $X$ has infinitely many "small points". In particular, we establish the first cases of Szpiro's small points conjecture, including the genus two case and the hyperelliptic case. The proofs use Arakelov theory for arithmetic surfaces and the theory of logarithmic forms.
