Conforming, nonconforming and DG methods for the stationary generalized Burgers- Huxley equation

In this work we address the analysis of the stationary generalized Burgers-Huxley equation (a nonlinear elliptic problem with anomalous advection) and propose conforming, nonconforming and discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods for its numerical approximation. The existence, uniqueness and regularity of weak solutions is discussed in detail using a Faedo-Galerkin approach and fixed-point theory, and a priori error estimates for all three types of numerical schemes are rigorously derived. A set of computational results are presented to show the efficacy of the proposed methods.

Divergence-conforming methods for transient doubly-diffusive flows: A priori and a posteriori error analysis

The analysis of the double-diffusion model and $\mathbf{H}(\mathrm{div})$-conforming method introduced in [Bürger, Méndez, Ruiz-Baier, SINUM (2019), 57:1318--1343] is extended to the time-dependent case. In addition, the efficiency and reliability analysis of residual-based {\it a posteriori} error estimators for the steady, semi-discrete, and fully discrete problems is established. The resulting methods are applied to simulate the sedimentation of small particles in salinity-driven flows. The method consists of Brezzi-Douglas-Marini approximations for velocity and compatible piecewise discontinuous pressures, whereas Lagrangian elements are used for concentration and salinity distribution. Numerical tests confirm the properties of the proposed family of schemes and of the adaptive strategy guided by the {\it a posteriori} error indicators.

Parameter-robust Stochastic Galerkin mixed approximation for linear poroelasticity with uncertain inputs

Linear poroelasticity models have a number of important applications in biology and geophysics. In particular, Biot's consolidation model is a well-known model that describes the coupled interaction between the linear response of a porous elastic medium and a diffusive fluid flow within it, assuming small deformations. Although deterministic linear poroelasticity models and finite element methods for solving them numerically have been well studied, there is little work to date on robust algorithms for solving poroelasticity models with uncertain inputs and for performing uncertainty quantification (UQ). The Biot model has a number of important physical parameters and inputs whose precise values are often uncertain in real world scenarios. In this work, we introduce and analyse the well-posedness of a new five-field model with uncertain and spatially varying Young's modulus and hydraulic conductivity field. By working with a properly weighted norm, we establish that the weak solution is stable with respect to variations in key physical parameters, including the Poisson ratio. We then introduce a novel locking-free stochastic Galerkin mixed finite element method that is robust in the incompressible limit. Armed with the `right' norm, we construct a parameter-robust preconditioner for the associated discrete systems. Our new method facilitates forward UQ, allowing efficient calculation of statistical quantities of interest and is provably robust with respect to variations in the Poisson ratio, the Biot--Willis constant and the storage coefficient, as well as the discretization parameters.

Least-squares spectral element preconditioners for fourth order elliptic problems

The goal of this paper is to propose preconditioners for the system of linear equations that arises from a discretization of fourth order elliptic problems using spectral element methods. These preconditioners are constructed using separation of variables and can be diagonalized and hence easy to invert. For second order elliptic problems this technique has proven to be very successful and performs better than other preconditioners. We show that these preconditioners are spectrally equivalent to the quadratic forms by which we approximate them. Numerical result for the biharmonic problem are presented to validate the theoretical estimates.
