The Pohozaev identity for mixed local-nonlocal operator

In this article we prove the Pohozaev identity for the semilinear Dirichlet problem of the form $-Δu + a(-Δ)^s u = f(u)$ in $Ω$, and $u=0$ in $Ω^c$, where $a$ is a non-negative constant and $Ω$ is a bounded $C^2$ domain. We also establish similar identity for systems of equations. As applications of this identity, we deduce a unique continuation property of eigenfunctions and also the nonexistence of nontrivial solutions in star-shaped domains under suitable condition on $f$.

Boundary regularity of mixed local-nonlocal operators and its application

Let $Ω$ be a bounded $C^2$ domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $u\in C(\mathbb{R}^n)$ solves \begin{equation*} \begin{aligned} Δu + a Iu + C_0|Du| \geq -K\quad \text{in}\; Ω, \quad Δu + a Iu - C_0|Du|\leq K \quad \text{in}\; Ω, \quad u=0\quad \text{in}\; Ω^c, \end{aligned} \end{equation*} in the viscosity sense, where $0\leq a\leq A_0$, $C_0, K\geq 0$, and $I$ is a suitable nonlocal operator. We show that $u/δ$ is in $C^κ(\bar Ω)$ for some $κ\in (0,1)$, where $δ(x)={\rm dist}(x, Ω^c)$. Using this result, we also establish that $u\in C^{1, γ}(\barΩ)$. Finally, we apply these results to study an overdetermined problem for mixed local-nonlocal operators.

Ergodic Risk-sensitive control -- A survey

Risk-sensitive control has received considerable interest since the seminal work of Howard and Matheson [120] because of its ability to account for fluctuations about the mean, its connection with $H_\infty$ control, and its application to financial mathematics. In this article, we attempt to put together a comprehensive survey on the research done on ergodic risk-sensitive control over the last four decades.

Ergodic Risk-Sensitive Control for Regime-Switching Diffusions

In this article, we study the ergodic risk-sensitive control problem for controlled regime-switching diffusions. Under a blanket stability hypothesis, we solve the associated nonlinear eigenvalue problem for weakly coupled systems and characterize the optimal stationary Markov controls via a suitable verification theorem. We also consider the near-monotone case and obtain the existence of principal eigenfunction and optimal stationary Markov controls.

Harnack inequality and principal eigentheory for general infinity Laplacian operators with gradient in $\mathbb{R}^N$ and applications

Under the lack of variational structure and nondegeneracy, we investigate three notions of \textit{generalized principal eigenvalue} for a general infinity Laplacian operator with gradient and homogeneous term. A Harnack inequality and boundary Harnack inequality are proved to support our analysis. This is a continuation of our first work [3] and a contribution in the development of the theory of \textit{generalized principal eigenvalue} beside the works [8, 13, 12, 9, 29]. We use these notions to characterize the validity of maximum principle and study the existence, nonexistence and uniqueness of positive solutions of Fisher-KPP type equations in the whole space. The sliding method is intrinsically improved for infinity Laplacian to solve the problem. The results are related to the Liouville type results, which will be meticulously explained.

Ergodic Risk-Sensitive Control of Markov Processes on Countable State Space Revisited

We consider a large family of discrete and continuous time controlled Markov processes and study an ergodic risk-sensitive minimization problem. Under a blanket stability assumption, we provide a complete analysis to this problem. In particular, we establish uniqueness of the value function and verification result for optimal stationary Markov controls, in addition to the existence results. We also revisit this problem under a near-monotonicity condition but without any stability hypothesis. Our results also include policy improvement algorithms both in discrete and continuous time frameworks.

On ergodic control problem for viscous Hamilton--Jacobi equations for weakly coupled elliptic systems

In this article we study ergodic problems in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^N$ for weakly coupled systems of viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations with coercive right-hand sides. The Hamiltonians are assumed to have a fairly general structure and the switching rates need not be constant. We prove the existence of a critical value $λ^*$ such that the ergodic eigenvalue problem has a solution for every $λ\leqλ^*$ and no solution for $λ>λ^*$. Moreover, the existence and uniqueness of non-negative solutions corresponding to the value $λ^*$ are also established. We also exhibit the implication of these results to the ergodic optimal control problems of controlled switching diffusions.

On the monotonicity property of the generalized eigenvalue for weakly-coupled cooperative elliptic systems

We consider general linear non-degenerate weakly-coupled cooperative elliptic systems and study certain monotonicity properties of the generalized principal eigenvalue in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with respect to the potential. It is shown that monotonicity on the right is equivalent to the recurrence property of the twisted operator which is, in turn, equivalent to the minimal growth property at infinity of the principal eigenfunctions. The strict monotonicity property of the principal eigenvalue is shown to be equivalent with the exponential stability of the twisted operators. An equivalence between the monotonicity property on the right and the stochastic representation of the principal eigenfunction is also established.

Risk-sensitive control for a class of diffusions with jumps

We consider a class of diffusions controlled through the drift and jump size, and driven by a jump Lévy process and a nondegenerate Wiener process, and we study infinite horizon (ergodic) risk-sensitive control problem for this model. We start with the controlled Dirichlet eigenvalue problem in smooth bounded domains, which also allows us to generalize current results in the literature on exit rate control problems. Then we consider the infinite horizon average risk-sensitive minimization problem and maximization problems on the whole domain. Under suitable hypotheses, we establish existence and uniqueness of a principal eigenfunction for the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) operator on the whole space, and fully characterize stationary Markov optimal controls as the measurable selectors of this HJB equation.

A variational characterization of the risk-sensitive average reward for controlled diffusions on $\mathbb{R}^d$

We address the variational formulation of the risk-sensitive reward problem for non-degenerate diffusions on $\mathbb{R}^d$ controlled through the drift. We establish a variational formula on the whole space and also show that the risk-sensitive value equals the generalized principal eigenvalue of the semilinear operator. This can be viewed as a controlled version of the variational formulas for principal eigenvalues of diffusion operators arising in large deviations. We also revisit the average risk-sensitive minimization problem and by employing a gradient estimate developed in this paper, we extend earlier results to unbounded drifts and running costs.

Ambrosetti-Prodi type results for Dirichlet problems of fractional Laplacian-like operators

We establish Ambrosetti--Prodi type results for viscosity and classical solutions of nonlinear Dirichlet problems for the fractional Laplace and comparable operators. In the choice of nonlinearities we consider semi-linear and super-linear growth cases separately. We develop a new technique using a functional integration-based approach, which is more robust in the non-local context than a purely analytic treatment.

On the policy improvement algorithm for ergodic risk-sensitive control

In this article we consider the ergodic risk-sensitive control problem for a large class of multidimensional controlled diffusions on the whole space. We study the minimization and maximization problems under either a blanket stability hypothesis, or a near-monotone assumption on the running cost. We establish the convergence of the policy improvement algorithm for these models. We also present a more general result concerning the region of attraction of the equilibrium of the algorithm.

Regularity results of nonlinear perturbed stable-like operators

We consider a class of fully nonlinear integro-differential operators where the nonlocal integral has two components: the non-degenerate one corresponds to the $α$-stable operator and the second one (possibly degenerate) corresponds to a class of \textit{lower order} Lévy measures. Such operators do not have a global scaling property. We establish Hölder regularity, Harnack inequality and boundary Harnack property of solutions of these operators.

A variational formula for risk-sensitive control of diffusions in $\mathbb{R}^d$

We address the variational problem for the generalized principal eigenvalue on $\mathbb{R}^d$ of linear and semilinear elliptic operators associated with nondegenerate diffusions controlled through the drift. We establish the Collatz-Wielandt formula for potentials that vanish at infinity under minimal hypotheses, and also for general potentials under blanket geometric ergodicity assumptions. We also present associated results having the flavor of a refined maximum principle.

A Skorokhod Map on Measure-Valued Paths with Applications to Priority Queues

The Skorokhod map on the half-line has proved to be a useful tool for studying processes with non-negativity constraints. In this work we introduce a measure-valued analog of this map that transforms each element $ζ$ of a certain class of càdlàg paths that take values in the space of signed measures on the half-line to a càdlàg path that takes values in the space of non-negative measures on $[0,\infty)$ in such a way that for each $x > 0$, the path $t \mapsto ζ_t[0,x]$ is transformed via a Skorokhod map on the half-line, and the regulating functions for different $x > 0$ are coupled. We establish regularity properties of this map and show that the map provides a convenient tool for studying queueing systems in which tasks are prioritized according to a continuous parameter. Three such well known models are the earliest-deadline-first, the shortest-job-first and the shortest-remaining-processing-time scheduling policies. For these applications, we show how the map provides a unified framework within which to form fluid model equations, prove uniqueness of solutions to these equations and establish convergence of scaled state processes to the fluid model. In particular, for these models, we obtain new convergence results in time-inhomogeneous settings, which appear to fall outside the purview of existing approaches.

On viscosity solution of HJB equations with state constraints and reflection control

Motivated by a control problem of a certain queueing network we consider a control problem where the dynamics is constrained in the nonnegative orthant $\mathbb{R}_+$ of the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space and controlled by the reflections at the faces/boundaries. We define a discounted value function associated to this problem and show that the value function is a viscosity solution to a certain HJB equation in $\mathbb{R}_+$ with nonlinear Neumann type boundary condition. Under certain conditions, we also characterize this value function as the unique solution to this HJB equation.

Ergodic control of multi-class $M/M/N+M$ queues in the Halfin-Whitt regime

We study a dynamic scheduling problem for a multi-class queueing network with a large pool of statistically identical servers. The arrival processes are Poisson, and service times and patience times are assumed to be exponentially distributed and class dependent. The optimization criterion is the expected long time average (ergodic) of a general (nonlinear) running cost function of the queue lengths. We consider this control problem in the Halfin-Whitt (QED) regime, that is, the number of servers $n$ and the total offered load $\mathbf{r}$ scale like $n\approx\mathbf{r}+\hatρ\sqrt{\mathbf{r}}$ for some constant $\hatρ$. This problem was proposed in [Ann. Appl. Probab. 14 (2004) 1084-1134, Section 5.2]. The optimal solution of this control problem can be approximated by that of the corresponding ergodic diffusion control problem in the limit. We introduce a broad class of ergodic control problems for controlled diffusions, which includes a large class of queueing models in the diffusion approximation, and establish a complete characterization of optimality via the study of the associated HJB equation. We also prove the asymptotic convergence of the values for the multi-class queueing control problem to the value of the associated ergodic diffusion control problem. The proof relies on an approximation method by spatial truncation for the ergodic control of diffusion processes, where the Markov policies follow a fixed priority policy outside a fixed compact set.

Mean Field Games with Ergodic cost for Discrete Time Markov Processes

We consider mean field games with ergodic cost in the framework of a general discrete time controlled Markov processes. The state space of the processes is given by a general $σ$-compact Polish space. Under certain conditions, we show the existence of a mean field game equilibrium. We also study the $N$-person game where the players interacts with each other via their empirical measure. We show that the $N$-person game has Nash equilibrium and as $N$ tends to infinity the equilibria converge to a mean field game solution.

On a Class of Stochastic Differential Equations With Jumps and Its Properties

We study stochastic differential equations with jumps with no diffusion part. We provide some basic stochastic characterizations of solutions of the corresponding non-local partial differential equations and prove the Harnack inequality for a class of these operators. We also establish key connections between the recurrence properties of these jump processes and the non-local partial differential operator. One of the key results is the regularity of solutions of the Dirichlet problem for a class of operators with locally weakly Hölder continuous kernels.

Control of the multiclass $G/G/1$ queue in the moderate deviation regime

A multi-class single-server system with general service time distributions is studied in a moderate deviation heavy traffic regime. In the scaling limit, an optimal control problem associated with the model is shown to be governed by a differential game that can be explicitly solved. While the characterization of the limit by a differential game is akin to results at the large deviation scale, the analysis of the problem is closely related to the much studied area of control in heavy traffic at the diffusion scale.

Fluid limits of G/G/1+G queues under the non-preemptive earliest-deadline-first discipline

A single-server queuing model is considered with customers that have deadlines. If a customer's deadline elapses before service is offered, the customer abandons the system (customers do not abandon while being served). When the server becomes available, it offers service to the customer having earliest deadline among those that are in the queue. We obtain a fluid limit of the queue length and abandonment processes and for the occupation measure of deadlines, in the form of measure-valued processes. We characterize the limit by means of a Skorohod problem in a time-varying domain, which has an explicit solution. The fluid limits also describe a certain process called the frontier, that is well known to play a key role in systems operating under this scheduling policy.

On Scaling Limits of Power Law Shot-noise Fields

This article studies the scaling limit of a class of shot-noise fields defined on an independently marked stationary Poisson point process and with a power law response function. Under appropriate conditions, it is shown that the shot-noise field can be scaled suitably to have a $α$-stable limit, intensity of the underlying point process goes to infinity. It is also shown that the finite dimensional distributions of the limiting random field have i.i.d. stable random components. We hence propose to call this limte the $α$- stable white noise field. Analogous results are also obtained for the extremal shot-noise field which converges to a Fréchet white noise field. Finally, these results are applied to the analysis of wireless networks.

Risk-sensitive control for the multi-class many server queue in the moderate deviation regime

A G/M/N queue is considered in the moderate deviation heavy traffic regime. The rate function for the customers-in-system process is obtained for the single class model. A risk-sensitive type control problem is considered for multi-class G/M/N model under the moderate deviation scaling and shown that the optimal control problem is related to a differential game problem.
