The three-quark static potential in perturbation theory

We study the three-quark static potential in perturbation theory in QCD. A complete next-to-leading order calculation is performed in the singlet, octets and decuplet channels and the potential exponentiation is demonstrated. The mixing of the octet representations is calculated. At next-to-next-to-leading order, the subset of diagrams producing three-body forces is identified in Coulomb gauge and its contribution to the potential calculated. Combining it with the contribution of the two-body forces, which may be extracted from the quark-antiquark static potential, we obtain the complete next-to-next-to-leading order three-quark static potential in the colour-singlet channel.

Lattice gauge theory computation of the static force

We explore a novel approach to compute the force between a static quark and a static antiquark with lattice gauge theory directly. The approach is based on expectation values of Wilson loops or Polyakov loops with chromoelectric field insertions. We discuss theoretical and technical aspects in detail, in particular, how to compensate large discretization errors with a multiplicative renormalization factor and the evaluation using a multilevel algorithm. We also compare numerical results for the static force to corresponding results obtained in the traditional way, i.e., by computing first the static potential and then taking the derivative.

Production and polarization of $S$-wave quarkonia in potential nonrelativistic QCD

Based on the potential nonrelativistic QCD formalism, we compute the nonrelativistic QCD long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) for inclusive production of $S$-wave heavy quarkonia. This greatly reduces the number of nonperturbative unknowns and brings in a substantial enhancement in the predictive power of the nonrelativistic QCD factorization formalism. We obtain improved determinations of the LDMEs and find cross sections and polarizations of $J/ψ$, $ψ(2S)$, and excited $Υ$ states that agree well with LHC data. Our results may have important implications in pinning down the heavy quarkonium production mechanism.

QCD Static Force in Gradient Flow

We compute the QCD static force and potential using gradient flow at next-to-leading order in the strong coupling. The static force is the spatial derivative of the static potential: it encodes the QCD interaction at both short and long distances. While on the one side the static force has the advantage of being free of the $O(Λ_{\rm QCD})$ renormalon affecting the static potential when computed in perturbation theory, on the other side its direct lattice QCD computation suffers from poor convergence. The convergence can be improved by using gradient flow, where the gauge fields in the operator definition of a given quantity are replaced by flowed fields at flow time $t$, which effectively smear the gauge fields over a distance of order $\sqrt{t}$, while they reduce to the QCD fields in the limit $t \to 0$. Based on our next-to-leading order calculation, we explore the properties of the static force for arbitrary values of $t$, as well as in the $t \to 0$ limit, which may be useful for lattice QCD studies.

Bottomonium suppression in an open quantum system using the quantum trajectories method

We solve the Lindblad equation describing the Brownian motion of a Coulombic heavy quark-antiquark pair in a strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma using the highly efficient Monte Carlo wave-function method. The Lindblad equation has been derived in the framework of pNRQCD and fully accounts for the quantum and non-Abelian nature of the system. The hydrodynamics of the plasma is realistically implemented through a 3+1D dissipative hydrodynamics code. We compute the bottomonium nuclear modification factor and compare with the most recent LHC data. The computation does not rely on any free parameter, as it depends on two transport coefficients that have been evaluated independently in lattice QCD. Our final results, which include late-time feed down of excited states, agree well with the available data from LHC 5.02 TeV PbPb collisions.

Inclusive Hadroproduction of $P$-Wave Heavy Quarkonia in Potential Nonrelativistic QCD

We compute the color-singlet and color-octet nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) long-distance matrix elements for inclusive production of $P$-wave quarkonia in the framework of potential NRQCD. In this way, the color-octet NRQCD long-distance matrix element can be determined without relying on measured cross section data, which has not been possible so far. We obtain inclusive cross sections of $χ_{cJ}$ and $χ_{bJ}$ at the LHC, which are in good agreement with data. In principle, the formalism developed in this Letter can be applied to all inclusive production processes of heavy quarkonia.

The static force from generalized Wilson loops using gradient flow

We explore a novel approach to compute the force between a static quark-antiquark pair with the gradient flow algorithm on the lattice. The approach is based on inserting a chromoelectric field in a Wilson loop. The renormalization issues, associated with the finite size of the chromoelectric field on the lattice, can be solved with the use of gradient flow. We compare numerical results for the flowed static potential to our previous measurement of the same observable without a gradient flow.

Decay and electromagnetic production of strongly coupled quarkonia in pNRQCD

We improve the pNRQCD approach to annihilation processes of heavy quarkonium and make first pNRQCD predictions for exclusive electromagnetic production of heavy quarkonium. We consider strongly coupled quarkonia, i.e., quarkonia that are not Coulombic bound states. Possible strongly coupled quarkonia include excited charmonium and bottomonium states. For these, pNRQCD provides expressions for the decay and exclusive electromagnetic production NRQCD matrix elements that depend on the wavefunctions at the origin and few universal gluon field correlators. We compute electromagnetic decay widths and exclusive production cross sections, and inclusive decay widths into light hadrons for $P$-wave quarkonia at relative order $v^2$ and leading order, respectively. We also compute the decay widths of $2S$ and $3S$ bottomonium states into lepton pairs and their ratios with the inclusive widths into light hadrons at relative order $v^2$.

Determination of alpha_s from the QCD static energy: an update

We present an update of our determination of the strong coupling alpha_s from the quantum chromodynamics static energy. This updated analysis includes new lattice data, at smaller lattice spacings and reaching shorter distances, the use of better suited perturbative expressions to compare with data in a wider distance range, and a comprehensive and detailed estimate of the error sources that contribute to the uncertainty of the final result. Our updated value for alpha_s at the Z-mass scale, M_Z, is alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1166^{+0.0012}_{-0.0008}, which supersedes our previous result.

Polyakov loop correlator in perturbation theory

We study the Polyakov loop correlator in the weak coupling expansion and show how the perturbative series re-exponentiates into singlet and adjoint contributions. We calculate the order $g^7$ correction to the Polyakov loop correlator in the short distance limit. We show how the singlet and adjoint free energies arising from the re-exponentiation formula of the Polyakov loop correlator are related to the gauge invariant singlet and octet free energies that can be defined in pNRQCD, namely we find that the two definitions agree at leading order in the multipole expansion, but differ at first order in the quark-antiquark distance.

Relativistic corrections to exclusive $χ_{cJ} + γ$ production from $e^+ e^-$ annihilation

We calculate in the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization framework all leading relativistic corrections to the exclusive production of $χ_{cJ}+γ$ in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation. In particular, we compute for the first time contributions induced by octet operators with a chromoelectric field. The matching coefficients multiplying production long distance matrix elements (LDMEs) are determined through perturbative matching between QCD and NRQCD at the amplitude level. Technical challenges encountered in the non-relativistic expansion of the QCD amplitudes are discussed in detail. The main source of uncertainty comes from the not so well known LDMEs. Accounting for it, we provide the following estimates for the production cross sections at $\sqrt{s} = 10.6\textrm{ GeV}$: $σ(e^+ e^- \to χ_{ c0} + γ) = (1.3 \pm 0.4) \textrm{ fb}$, $σ(e^+ e^- \to χ_{ c1} + γ) = (15.4 \pm 6.7) \textrm{ fb}$, and $σ(e^+ e^- \to χ_{ c2} + γ) = (4.7 \pm 2.6) \textrm{ fb}$.

Spin structure of heavy-quark hybrids

A unique feature of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the theory of strong interactions, is the possibility for gluonic degrees of freedom to participate in the construction of physical hadrons, which are color singlets, in an analogous manner to valence quarks. Hadrons with no valence quarks are called glueballs, while hadrons where both gluons and valence quarks combine to form a color singlet are called hybrids. The unambiguous identification of such states among the experimental hadron spectrum has been thus far not possible. Glueballs are particularly difficult to establish experimentally since the lowest lying ones are expected to strongly mix with conventional mesons. On the other hand, hybrids should be easier to single out because the set of quantum numbers available to their lowest excitations may be exotic, i.e., not realized in conventional quark-antiquark systems. Particularly promising for discovery appear to be heavy hybrids, which are made of gluons and a heavy-quark-antiquark pair (charm or bottom). In the heavy-quark sector systematic tools can be used that are not available in the light-quark sector. In this paper we use a nonrelativistic effective field theory to uncover for the first time the full spin structure of heavy-quark hybrids up to $1/m^2$-terms in the heavy-quark-mass expansion. We show that such terms display novel characteristics at variance with our consolidated experience on the fine and hyperfine splittings in atomic, molecular and nuclear physics. We determine the nonperturbative contributions to the matching coefficients of the effective field theory by fitting our results to lattice-QCD determinations of the charmonium hybrid spectrum and extrapolate the results to the bottomonium hybrid sector where lattice-QCD determinations are still challenging.

The $XYZ$ states: experimental and theoretical status and perspectives

The quark model was formulated in 1964 to classify mesons as bound states made of a quark-antiquark pair, and baryons as bound states made of three quarks. For a long time all known mesons and baryons could be classified within this scheme. Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), however, in principle also allows the existence of more complex structures, generically called exotic hadrons or simply exotics. These include four-quark hadrons (tetraquarks and hadronic molecules), five-quark hadrons (pentaquarks) and states with active gluonic degrees of freedom (hybrids), and even states of pure glue (glueballs). Exotic hadrons have been systematically searched for in numerous experiments for many years. Remarkably, in the past fifteen years, many new hadrons that do not exhibit the expected properties of ordinary (not exotic) hadrons have been discovered in the quarkonium spectrum. These hadrons are collectively known as $XYZ$ states. Some of them, like the charged states, are undoubtedly exotic. Parallel to the experimental progress, the last decades have also witnessed an enormous theoretical effort to reach a theoretical understanding of the $XYZ$ states. Theoretical approaches include not only phenomenological extensions of the quark model to exotics, but also modern non-relativistic effective field theories and lattice QCD calculations. The present work aims at reviewing the rapid progress in the field of exotic $XYZ$ hadrons over the past few years both in experiments and theory. It concludes with a summary on future prospects and challenges.

CP asymmetry in heavy Majorana neutrino decays at finite temperature: the hierarchical case

We consider the simplest realization of leptogenesis with one heavy Majorana neutrino species much lighter than the other ones. In this scenario, when the temperature of the early universe is smaller than the lightest Majorana neutrino mass, we compute at first order in the Standard Model couplings and, for each coupling, at leading order in the termperature the CP asymmetry in the decays of the lightest neutrino into leptons and anti-leptons. We perform the calculation using a hierarchy of two effective field theories organized as expansions in the inverse of the heavy-neutrino masses. In the ultimate effective field theory, leading thermal corrections proportional to the Higgs self coupling and the gauge couplings are encoded in one single operator of dimension five, whereas corrections proportional to the top Yukawa coupling are encoded in four operators of dimension seven, which we compute.

CP asymmetry in heavy Majorana neutrino decays at finite temperature: the nearly degenerate case

In a model where Majorana neutrinos heavier than the electroweak scale couple to Standard Model Higgs bosons and leptons, we compute systematically thermal corrections to the direct and indirect CP asymmetries in the Majorana neutrino decays. These are key ingredients entering the equations that describe the thermodynamic evolution of the induced lepton-number asymmetry eventually leading to the baryon asymmetry in the universe. We compute the thermal corrections in an effective field theory framework that assumes the temperature smaller than the masses of the Majorana neutrinos and larger than the electroweak scale, and we provide the leading corrections in an expansion of the temperature over the mass. In this work, we consider the case of two Majorana neutrinos with nearly degenerate masses.

Long-range properties of $1S$ bottomonium states

In the framework of weakly-coupled pNRQCD, we derive, first, an analytical expression for the chromo-polarizability of $1S$-bottomonium states in agreement with previous determinations. Then we use the QCD trace anomaly to obtain the two-pion production amplitude for the chromo-polarizability operator and match the result to a chiral effective field theory with $1S$-bottomonium states and pions as degrees-of-freedom. In this chiral effective field theory we compute some long-range properties of the $1S$ bottomonium generated by the pion coupling such as the leading chiral logarithm to the $1S$-bottomonium mass and the van der Waals potential between two $1S$-bottomonium states. Both results improve on previously known expressions.

A low-energy determination of $α_s$ at three loops

We review one of the most accurate low-energy determinations of $α_s$. Comparing at short distances the QCD static energy at three loops and resummation of the next-to-next-to leading logarithms with its determination in 2+1-flavor lattice QCD, we obtain $α_s(1.5~{\rm GeV})=0.336^{+0.012}_{-0.008}$, which corresponds to $α_s(M_Z)=0.1166^{+0.0012}_{-0.0008}$. We discuss future perspectives.

The Polyakov loop at next-to-next-to leading order

We calculate the next-to-next-to-leading correction to the expectation value of the Polyakov loop or equivalently to the free energy of a static charge. This correction is of order $g^5$. We show that up to this order the free energy of the static charge is proportional to the quadratic Casimir operator of the corresponding representation. We also compare our perturbative result with the most recent lattice results in SU(3) gauge theory.

Effective string theory and the long-range relativistic corrections to the quark-antiquark potential

The complete expression of the heavy quark-antiquark potential up to order $1/m^2$ is known from QCD in terms of Wilson loop expectation values. We use that expression and a mapping, assumed to be valid at large distances, between Wilson loop expectation values and correlators evaluated in the effective string theory, to compute the potential. We obtain previously unknown results for the spin and momentum-independent parts of the potential. These are linearly rising with the distance and may be interpreted as relativistic corrections to the string tension. We confirm known results for the other parts of the potential. Finally, we compute the discrete spectrum of a heavy quark-antiquark pair whose interaction is just given by the obtained potential.

Non-relativistic particles in a thermal bath

Heavy particles are a window to new physics and new phenomena. Since the late eighties they are treated by means of effective field theories that fully exploit the symmetries and power counting typical of non-relativistic systems. More recently these effective field theories have been extended to describe non-relativistic particles propagating in a medium. After introducing some general features common to any non-relativistic effective field theory, we discuss two specific examples: heavy Majorana neutrinos colliding in a hot plasma of Standard Model particles in the early universe and quarkonia produced in heavy-ion collisions dissociating in a quark-gluon plasma.

preprint2013arXiv

An effective field theory for non-relativistic Majorana neutrinos

Heavy Majorana neutrinos enter in many scenarios of physics beyond the Standard Model: in the original seesaw mechanism they provide a natural explanation for the small masses of the Standard Model neutrinos and in the simplest leptogenesis framework they are at the origin of the baryonic matter of the universe. In this paper, we develop an effective field theory for non-relativistic Majorana particles, which is analogous to the heavy-quark effective theory. Then, we apply it to the case of a heavy Majorana neutrino decaying in a hot and dense plasma of Standard Model particles, whose temperature is much smaller than the mass of the Majorana neutrino but still much larger than the electroweak scale. The neutrino width gets zero-temperature contributions that can be computed from in-vacuum matrix elements, and thermal corrections. Only the latter will be addressed. Symmetry and power counting arguments made manifest by the effective field theory restrict the form of the thermal corrections and simplify their calculation. The final result agrees with recent determinations obtained with different methods. The effective field theory presented here is suitable to be used for a variety of different models involving non-relativistic Majorana fermions.

Gauge invariant definition of the jet quenching parameter

In the framework of Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, the jet quenching parameter, $\hat{q}$, has been evaluated by adding the effect of Glauber gluon interactions to the propagation of a highly-energetic collinear parton in a medium. The result, which holds in covariant gauges, has been expressed in terms of the expectation value of two Wilson lines stretching along the direction of the four-momentum of the parton. In this paper, we show how that expression can be generalized to an arbitrary gauge by the addition of transverse Wilson lines. The transverse Wilson lines are explicitly computed by resumming interactions of the parton with Glauber gluons that appear only in non-covariant gauges. As an application of our result, we discuss the contribution to $\hat{q}$ coming from transverse momenta of order $g^2T$ in a medium that is a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma.

Renormalization of Loop Functions in QCD

We give a short overview of the renormalization properties of rectangular Wilson loops, the Polyakov loop correlator and the cyclic Wilson loop. We then discuss how to renormalize loops with more than one intersection, using the simplest non-trivial case as an illustrative example. Our findings expand on previous treatments. The generalized exponentiation theorem is applied to the Polyakov loop correlator and used to renormalize linear divergences in the cyclic Wilson loop.

preprint2013arXiv

Renormalization of the cyclic Wilson loop

In finite-temperature field theory, the cyclic Wilson loop is defined as a rectangular Wilson loop spanning the whole compactified time direction. In a generic non-abelian gauge theory, we calculate the perturbative expansion of the cyclic Wilson loop up to order g^4. At this order and after charge renormalization, the cyclic Wilson loop is known to be ultraviolet divergent. We show that the divergence is not associated with cusps in the contour but is instead due to the contour intersecting itself because of the periodic boundary conditions. One consequence of this is that the cyclic Wilson loop mixes under renormalization with the correlator of two Polyakov loops. The resulting renormalization equation is tested up to order g^6 and used to resum the leading logarithms associated with the intersection divergence. Implications for lattice studies of this operator, which may be relevant for the phenomenology of quarkonium at finite temperature, are discussed.

Symmetries of the Three Heavy-Quark System and the Color-Singlet Static Energy at NNLL

We study the symmetries of the three heavy-quark system under exchange of the quark fields within the effective field theory framework of potential non-relativistic QCD. The symmetries constrain the form of the matching coefficients in the effective theory. We then focus on the color-singlet sector and determine the so far unknown leading ultrasoft contribution to the static potential, which is of order alpha_s^4 ln(μ), and consequently to the static energy, which is of order alpha_s^4 ln(alpha_s). Finally, in the case of an equilateral geometry, we solve the renormalization group equations and resum the leading ultrasoft logarithms for the static potential of three quarks in a color singlet, octet and decuplet representation.

Thermal width and quarkonium dissociation by inelastic parton scattering

In a weak-coupling effective field theory framework we study quarkonium dissociation induced by inelastic scattering with partons in the medium. This is the dominant dissociation process for temperatures such that the Debye mass is larger than the binding energy. We evaluate the dissociation cross section and the corresponding thermal decay width. At leading order we derive a convolution formula relating the two, which is consistent with the optical theorem and QCD at finite temperature. Bound state effects are systematically included. They add contributions to the cross section and width that are beyond a quasi-free approximation, whose validity is critically reviewed. For temperatures such that the Debye mass is smaller than the binding energy, the dominant dissociation mechanism is gluo-dissociation consisting in quarkonium dissociation induced by the absorbtion of a gluon from the medium. We calculate the gluo-dissociation cross section and width at next-to-leading-order accuracy.

Determination of alpha_s from the QCD static energy

We compare lattice data for the short-distance part of the static energy in 2+1 flavor quantum chromodynamics (QCD) with perturbative calculations, up to next-to-next-to-next-to leading-logarithmic accuracy. We show that perturbation theory describes very well the lattice data at short distances, and exploit this fact to obtain a determination of the product of the lattice scale r_0 with the QCD scale Lambda_{MS}. With the input of the value of r_0, this provides a determination of the strong coupling alpha_s at the typical distance scale of the lattice data. We obtain alpha_s(1.5 GeV)=0.326\pm0.019, which provides a novel determination of alpha_s at low energy and with three-loop accuracy (including resummation of the leading ultrasoft logarithms). When this value is evolved to the Z-mass scale M_Z, it corresponds to alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1156^{+0.0021}_{-0.0022}.

Model-independent Study of Electric Dipole Transitions in Quarkonium

The paper contains a systematic, model-independent treatment of electric dipole (E1) transitions in heavy quarkonium. Within the effective field theory framework of potential non-relativistic QCD (pNRQCD), we derive the complete set of relativistic corrections of relative order v^2 both for weakly and strongly-coupled quarkonia. The result supports and complements former results from potential model calculations.

Precision determination of r_0Lambda_MS from the QCD static energy

We use the recently obtained theoretical expression for the complete QCD static energy at next-to-next-to-next-to leading-logarithmic accuracy to determine r_0Lambda_MS by comparison with available lattice data, where r_0 is the lattice scale and Lambda_MS is the QCD scale. We obtain r_0Lambda_MS=0.637^{+0.032}_{-0.030} for the zero-flavor case. The procedure we describe can be directly used to obtain r_0Lambda_MS in the unquenched case, when unquenched lattice data for the static energy at short distances becomes available. Using the value of the strong coupling alpha_s as an input, the unquenched result would provide a determination of the lattice scale r_0.

Electromagnetic quarkonium decays at order v^7

We compute S-wave and P-wave electromagnetic quarkonium decays at order v^7 in the heavy-quark velocity expansion. In the S-wave case, our calculation confirms and completes previous findings. In the P-wave case, our results are in disagreement with previous ones; in particular, we find that two matrix elements less are needed. The cancellation of infrared singularities in the matching procedure is discussed.

Hadronic quarkonium decays at order v^7

We compute the complete imaginary part of the NRQCD Lagrangian at order 1/M^4 in the heavy-quark mass expansion, which includes center of mass operators, and at order alpha_s^2 in the matching coefficients. We also compute the imaginary part of the NRQCD Lagrangian at order 1/M^6 and at order alpha_s^2 that contributes to the S-wave and P-wave inclusive decay widths of heavy quarkonium into light hadrons at order v^7 in the heavy-quark velocity expansion. If we count alpha_s(M) ~ v^2, the calculation provides the complete next-to-leading order corrections to the P-wave hadronic widths, and in the original NRQCD power counting, the complete next-to-leading order corrections to the vector S-wave widths, and part of the next-to-next-to leading order corrections to the pseudoscalar S-wave widths. In the S-wave case, we confirm previous findings and add new terms in a more conservative power counting. In the P-wave case, our results are in disagreement with previous ones. Constraints induced by Poincare' invariance on the NRQCD four-fermion sector are studied for the first time and provide an additional check of the calculation. Perspectives for phenomenological applications are discussed.

Poincare' invariance constraints on non-relativistic effective field theories

We discuss Poincare' invariance in the context of non-relativistic effective field theories of QCD. We show, in the cases of the HQET and pNRQCD, that the algebra of the generators of the Poincare' transformations imposes precise constraints on the form of the Lagrangian. In the case of the HQET they are the relations formerly obtained by reparametrization invariance.

Poincare' invariance constraints on NRQCD and potential NRQCD

We discuss the constraints induced by the algebra of the Poincare' generators on non-relativistic effective field theories. In the first part we derive some relations among the matching coefficients of the HQET (and NRQCD), which have been formerly obtained by use of reparametrization invariance. In the second part we obtain new constraints on the matching coefficients of pNRQCD.

The spin-orbit potential and Poincaré invariance in finite temperature pNRQCD

Heavy quarkonium at finite temperature has been the subject of intense theoretical studies, for it provides a potentially clean probe of the quark-gluon plasma. Recent studies have made use of effective field theories to exploit in a systematic manner the hierarchy of energy scales that characterize the system. In the case of a quarkonium in a medium whose temperature is smaller than the typical momentum transfer in the bound state but larger than its energy, the suitable effective field theory is pNRQCD_HTL, where degrees of freedom with energy or momentum larger than the binding energy have been integrated out. Thermal effects are expected to break Poincaré invariance, which, at zero temperature, manifests itself in a set of exact relations between the matching coefficients of the effective field theory. In the paper, we evaluate the leading-order thermal corrections to the spin-orbit potentials of pNRQCD_HTL and show that Poincaré invariance is indeed violated.

Thermal width and gluo-dissociation of quarkonium in pNRQCD

The thermal width of heavy-quarkonium bound states in a quark-gluon plasma has been recently derived in an effective field theory approach. Two phenomena contribute to the width: the Landau damping phenomenon and the break-up of a colour-singlet bound state into a colour-octet heavy quark-antiquark pair by absorption of a thermal gluon. In the paper, we investigate the relation between the singlet-to-octet thermal break-up and the so-called gluo-dissociation, a mechanism for quarkonium dissociation widely used in phenomenological approaches. The gluo-dissociation thermal width is obtained by convoluting the gluon thermal distribution with the cross section of a gluon and a 1S quarkonium state to a colour octet quark-antiquark state in vacuum, a cross section that at leading order, but neglecting colour-octet effects, was computed long ago by Bhanot and Peskin. We will, first, show that the effective field theory framework provides a natural derivation of the gluo-dissociation factorization formula at leading order, which is, indeed, the singlet-to-octet thermal break-up expression. Second, the singlet-to-octet thermal break-up expression will allow us to improve the Bhanot--Peskin cross section by including the contribution of the octet potential, which amounts to include final-state interactions between the heavy quark and antiquark. Finally, we will quantify the effects due to final-state interactions on the gluo-dissociation cross section and on the quarkonium thermal width.

Heavy Quarkonium in a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma below the melting temperature

We calculate the heavy quarkonium energy levels and decay widths in a quark-gluon plasma, whose temperature T and screening mass m_D satisfy the hierarchy m alpha_s >> T >> m alpha_s^2 >> m_D (m being the heavy-quark mass), at order m alpha_s^5. We first sequentially integrate out the scales m, m alpha_s and T, and, next, we carry out the calculations in the resulting effective theory using techniques of integration by regions. A collinear region is identified, which contributes at this order. We also discuss the implications of our results concerning heavy quarkonium suppression in heavy ion collisions.

Polyakov loop and correlator of Polyakov loops at next-to-next-to-leading order

We study the Polyakov loop and the correlator of two Polyakov loops at finite temperature in the weak-coupling regime. We calculate the Polyakov loop at order g^4. The calculation of the correlator of two Polyakov loops is performed at distances shorter than the inverse of the temperature and for electric screening masses larger than the Coulomb potential. In this regime, it is accurate up to order g^6. We also evaluate the Polyakov-loop correlator in an effective field theory framework that takes advantage of the hierarchy of energy scales in the problem and makes explicit the bound-state dynamics. In the effective field theory framework, we show that the Polyakov-loop correlator is at leading order in the multipole expansion the sum of a colour-singlet and a colour-octet quark-antiquark correlator, which are gauge invariant, and compute the corresponding colour-singlet and colour-octet free energies.

Poincare' invariance and the heavy-quark potential

We derive and discuss the constraints induced by Poincare' invariance on the form of the heavy-quark potential up to order 1/m^2. We present two derivations: one uses general arguments directly based on the Poincare' algebra and the other follows from an explicit calculation on the expression of the potential in terms of Wilson loops. We confirm relations from the literature, but also clarify the origin of a long-standing false statement pointed out recently.

The QCD potential at O(1/m^2): Complete spin-dependent and spin-independent result

Within an effective field theory framework, we obtain an expression, with O(1/m^2) accuracy, for the energies of the gluonic excitations between heavy quarks, which holds beyond perturbation theory. For the singlet heavy quark--antiquark energy, in particular, we also obtain an expression in terms of Wilson loops. This provides, twenty years after the seminal work of Eichten and Feinberg, the first complete expression for the heavy quarkonium potential up to O(1/m^2) for pure gluodynamics. Several errors present in the previous literature (also in the work of Eichten and Feinberg) have been corrected. We also briefly discuss the power counting of NRQCD in the non-perturbative regime.

A lattice determination of QCD field strength correlators

We study field strength correlators in presence of a static quark-antiquark pair by use of lattice methods. The lattice data have been acquired recently in the context of a determination of relativistic corrections to the static interquark potential. We extract independent estimates of the form factors of two point correlation functions and investigate the effect of higher order correlators. Our results confirm the dominance of the two point correlators in the regions of intermediate and large quark separations, and are compatible with correlation length values obtained from different approaches.

Non-perturbative dynamics of the heavy-light quark system in the non-recoil limit

Starting from the relativistic gauge-invariant quark-antiquark Green function we obtain the relevant interaction in the one-body limit, which can be interpreted as the kernel of a non-perturbative Dirac equation. We study this kernel in different kinematic regions, reproducing, in particular, for heavy quark the potential case and sum rules results. We discuss the relevance of the result for heavy-light mesons and the relation with the phenomenological Dirac equations used up to now in the literature.
