Actinides measurements on environmental samples of the Garigliano Nuclear Power Plant (Italy) during the decommissioning phase

An environmental survey was carried out in order to provide an adequate and updated assessment of the radiological impact that the decommissioning operations of the Garigliano NNP may have procured to the environment of the surrounding area. Some isotopes of uranium (235U, 236U, 238U) and plutonium (239Pu, 240Pu) and some γ-emitter radionuclides (60Co, 137Cs and 40K,) were measured to quantify the possible contamination and identify the origin source. Actinides isotopes were measured with the AMS technique that is able to detect elements in traces and reach sensitivity that cannot be obtained with other methods. The results show that the anthropogenic component is essentially due to the atmospheric fallout and no contamination can be charged to the NPP. Data are represented in geo-referenced maps to highlight the distribution area and some particular aspects of each measured radionuclide.

Space-time Bayesian analysis of the environmental impact of a dismissing nuclear power plant

The present work concerns data of three campaigns carried out during the last twenty years in the plain of the Garigliano river surrounding the Garigliano Nuclear Power Plant (GNPP), which is located in Southern Italy and shut down in 1979. Moreover, some data from surveys held in the eighties, across the Chernobyl accident, have been taken in account. The results for the soil samples, in particular for 137Cs and 236U specific activity, were analyzed for their extension in space and in time. Some of the problems related to the classical analysis of environmental radiological data (non-normal distribution of the values, small number of sample points, multiple comparison and presence of values lesser than the minimum detectable activity) have been overcome with the use of Bayesian methods. The scope of the paper is threefold: (1) to introduce the data of the last campaign held in the Garigliano plain; (2) to insert these data in a larger spatio-temporal frame; (3) to show how the Bayesian approach can be applied to radiological environmental surveys, stressing out its advantages over other approaches, using the data of the campaigns. It results that (i) no new contribution there was in the last decades, (ii) specific activity values of the area surrounding the GNPP are consistent with those obtained in other farther areas, (iii) the effective depletion half-life factor for 137Cs is much lower than the half-life of the radionuclide.

Heat flows and energetic behavior of a telecommunication radio base station

This paper shows a study on energetic consumption of BTSs (Base Transceiver Stations) for mobile communication, related to conditioning functions. An energetic "thermal model" of a telecommunication station is proposed and studied. The results have been validated with a BTS in central Italy, showing good agreement. Findings show a substantial high internal-external temperature difference in the containing shelter, particularly during daytime and warm months, due to sources of heat (equipment, external temperature and sun radiation) and to the difficulty in spread the warmth out. The necessity to keep the operating temperatures within a given range for the correct functioning of the electronic equipment requires the use of conditioning setups, and this significantly increases the energetic demand of the whole system. The analysis of thermal flows across the shelter can help to gather further data on its temperature behavior and to devise practical measures to lower the power demand, while keeping the operating parameters in the suggested ranges. The investigation of some operating parameters of the equipment and of the shelter, such as threshold set-points, air vent area, external wall transmittance and reflectivity, suggests annual energy savings between 10% and 30%.

Monitoring and optimization of energy consumption of base transceiver stations

The growth and development of the mobile phone network has led to an increased demand for energy by the telecommunications sector, with a noticeable impact on the environment. Monitoring of energy consumption is a great tool for understanding how to better manage this consumption and find the best strategy to adopt in order to maximize reduction of unnecessary usage of electricity. This paper reports on a monitoring campaign performed on six Base Transceiver Stations (BSs) located central Italy, with different technology, typology and technical characteristics. The study focuses on monitoring energy consumption and environmental parameters (temperature, noise, and global radiation), linking energy consumption with the load of telephone traffic and with the air conditioning functions used to cool the transmission equipment. Moreover, using experimental data collected, it is shown, with a Monte Carlo simulation based on power saving features, how the BS monitored could save energy.
