Precession shift in curvature based Extended Theories of Gravity and Quintessence fields

In this paper we constrain the sizes of hypothetical new weak forces by making use the data coming from the precession of Planets. We consider the weak field approximation of Scalar-Tensor Fourth Order Gravity (STFOG), which include several models of modified gravity. The form of the corrections to the Newtonian potential if of the form of Yukawa-like potential (5th force), i.e. $V(r) = α \dfrac{e^{-βr}}{r}$, where $α$ is the parameter related to the strength of the potential, and $β$ to the range of the force. The present data on periastron advance allow to infer a constraint on the free parameter of the gravitational models. Moreover, the Non-Commutative Spectral Gravity (NCSG) is also studied, being a particular case STFOG. Here we show that the precession shift of Planet allows to improve the bounds on parameter $β$ by several orders of magnitude. Finally such an analysis is studied to the case of power-like potential, referring in particular to deformation of the Schwarzschild geometry induced by a quintessence field, responsible of the present accelerated phase of the Universe.

Neutron Interferometry and axion like particles

We propose a method to reveal axions and axion-like particles based on interferometric measurement of neutron beams. We consider an interferometer in which the neutron beam is split in two sub-beams propagating in regions with differently oriented magnetic fields. The beam paths and the strength of the magnetic fields are set in such a way that all the contributions to the phase difference but the one due to axion-induced interactions are removed. The resulting phase difference is directly related to the presence of axions. Our results show that such a phase is in principle detectable with neutron interferometry, possibly proving the existence of axions and axion-like particles.

Testing CPT violation, entanglement and gravitational interactions in particle mixing with trapped ions

By analyzing the analogies between the effective system of $N$ spins described by the Ising Hamiltonian and the phenomenon of the self--gravity in mixed particle systems, we show that cooled ions held in a segmented ion trap and exposed to a magnetic field gradient can simulate the proposed mechanism of mutual interaction in mixed neutrino system. We show that with trapped ions one can reproduce the expected corrections to the flavor transitions and the $CPT$ violation induced by gravity on flavor fields, which may have played an important role in the early stages of the universe. The results presented are experimentally testable. They indicate that ions confined in microtraps can represent a new tool to test fundamental phenomena of nature.

The flavor vacuum in the expanding universe and dark matter

We analyze fermion mixing in the framework of field quantization in curved spacetime. We compute the expectation value of the energy momentum tensor of mixed fermions on the flavor vacuum. We consider spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker metrics, and we show that the energy momentum tensor of the flavor vacuum is diagonal and conserved. Therefore it can be interpreted as the effective energy momentum tensor of a perfect fluid. In particular, assuming a fixed De Sitter background, the equation of state of the fluid is consistent with that of dust and cold dark matter. Our results establish a new link between quantum effects and classical fluids, and indicate that the flavor vacuum of mixed fermions may represent a new component of dark matter.

Einstein, Planck and Vera Rubin: relevant encounters between the Cosmological and the Quantum Worlds

In Cosmology and in Fundamental Physics there is a crucial question like: where the elusive substance that we call Dark Matter is hidden in the Universe and what is it made of?, that, even after 40 years from the Vera Rubin seminal discovery does not have a proper answer. Actually, the more we have investigated, the more this issue has become strongly entangled with aspects that go beyond the established Quantum Physics, the Standard Model of Elementary particles and the General Relativity and related to processes like the Inflation, the accelerated expansion of the Universe and High Energy Phenomena around compact objects. Even Quantum Gravity and very exotic DM particle candidates may play a role in framing the Dark Matter mystery that seems to be accomplice of new unknown Physics. Observations and experiments have clearly indicated that the above phenomenon cannot be considered as already theoretically framed, as hoped for decades. The Special Topic to which this review belongs wants to penetrate this newly realized mystery from different angles, including that of a contamination of different fields of Physics apparently unrelated. We show with the works of this ST that this contamination is able to guide us into the required new Physics. This review wants to provide a good number of these "paths or contamination" beyond/among the three worlds above; in most of the cases, the results presented here open a direct link with the multi-scale dark matter phenomenon, enlightening some of its important aspects. Also in the remaining cases, possible interesting contacts emerges.

Neutrinos in curved spacetimes: particle mixing and flavor oscillations

We present a quantum field theoretical approach to the vacuum neutrino oscillations in curved space, we analyze the non--trivial interplay between quantum field mixing and field quantization in curved space and derive new oscillation formulae. We compute the formulae explicitly in the spatially flat FLRW metrics for universes dominated by a cosmological constant and by radiation. We evaluate the transition probabilities in the Schwarzschild black hole metric, and we show that the Hawking radiation affects the oscillations of neutrinos. We show that our results are consistent with those of previous analyses when the quantum mechanical limit is considered.

Probing axion mediated fermion--fermion interaction by means of entanglement

We propose a new approach in the investigation and detection of axion and axion-like particles based on the study of the entanglement for two interacting fermions. We study a system made of two identical fermions with spin-1/2, and we show that fermion-fermion interaction mediated by axions leads to a non-zero entanglement between the fermions. An entanglement measurement can reveal the interaction, providing an indirect evidence of the existence of axions. We discuss how the other interactions affect the entanglement, and how to isolate the axion contribution. Particular care is devoted to the analysis of the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction, which turns out to be, apart from axions, the most relevant contribution to the entanglement, and we show that it can be suppressed by setting opportunely the duration of the observation. We also introduce a two-body correlation function, which could be directly observed in an experiment, and plays the role of an entanglement witness.

Quantum field theory of axion-photon mixing and vacuum polarization

We report on recent results obtained by analyzing axion--photon mixing in the framework of quantum field theory. We obtain corrections to the oscillation formulae and we reveal a new effect of the vacuum polarization due to the non-zero value of the vacuum energy for the component of the photon polarization mixed with the axion. The study of axion--photon mixing in curved space is also presented. Numerical analysis show that some quantum field theory effect of axion--photon mixing, in principle, could be detected experimentally.

Dark matter and dark energy induced by condensates

It is shown that the vacuum condensate induced by many phenomena behaves as a perfect fluid which, under particular conditions, has zero or negative pressure. In particular, the condensates of thermal states, of fields in curved space and of mixed particles have been analyzed. It is shown that the thermal states with the cosmic microwave radiation temperature, the Unruh and the Hawking radiations give negligible contributions to the critical energy density of the universe, while the thermal vacuum of the intercluster medium could contribute to the dark matter, together with the vacuum energy of fields in curved space-time and of mixed neutrinos. Moreover, a component of the dark energy can be represented by the vacuum of axion-like particles mixed with photons and superpartners of neutrinos. The formal analogy among the systems characterized by the condensates can open new scenarios in the possibility to detect the dark components of the universe in table top experiments.

Thermal condensate structure and cosmological energy density of the Universe

The aim of this paper is the study of thermal vacuum condensate for scalar and fermion fields. We analyze the thermal states at the temperature of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and we show that the vacuum expectation value of the energy momentum tensor density of photon fields reproduces the energy density and pressure of the CMB. We perform the computations in the formal framework of the thermo field dynamics. We also consider the case of neutrinos and thermal states at the temperature of the neutrino cosmic background. Consistency with the estimated lower bound of the sum of the active neutrino masses is verified. In the boson sector, non trivial contribution to the energy of the universe is given by particles of masses of the order of $10^{-4}eV$ compatible with the ones of the axion-like particles. The fractal self-similar structure of the thermal radiation is also discussed and related to the coherent structure of the thermal vacuum.

Bessel Functions in Mass Action. Modeling of Memories and Remembrances

Data from experimental observations of a class of neurological processes (Freeman K-sets) present functional distribution reproducing Bessel function behavior. We model such processes with couples of damped/amplified oscillators which provide time dependent representation of Bessel equation. The root loci of poles and zeros conform to solutions of K-sets. Some light is shed on the problem of filling the gap between the cellular level dynamics and the brain functional activity. Breakdown of time-reversal symmetry is related with the cortex thermodynamic features. This provides a possible mechanism to deduce lifetime of recorded memory.

Vacuum condensates as a mechanism of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking

A possible mechanism for the spontaneous breaking of SUSY, based on the presence of vacuum condensates, is reviewed. Such a mechanism could occur in many physical examples, both at the fundamental and emergent level, and would be formally analogous to spontaneous SUSY breaking at finite temperature in the TFD formalism, in which case it can be applied as well. A possible experimental setup for detecting such a breaking through measurement of the Anandan-Aharonov invariants associated with vacuum condensates in an optical lattice model is proposed.

On the coherent behavior of pancreatic beta cell clusters

Beta cells in pancreas represent an example of coupled biological oscillators which via communication pathways, are able to synchronize their electrical activity, giving rise to pulsatile insulin release. In this work we numerically analyze scale free self-similarity features of membrane voltage signal power density spectrum, through a stochastic dynamical model for beta cells in the islets of Langerhans fine tuned on mouse experimental data. Adopting the algebraic approach of coherent state formalism, we show how coherent molecular domains can arise from proper functional conditions leading to a parallelism with "phase transition" phenomena of field theory.

Transduction of DNA information through water and electromagnetic waves

The experimental conditions by which electromagnetic signals (EMS) of low frequency can be emitted by diluted aqueous solutions of some bacterial and viral DNAs are described. That the recorded EMS and nanostructures induced in water carry the DNA information (sequence) is shown by retrieval of that same DNA by classical PCR amplification using the TAQ polymerase, including both primers and nucleotides. Moreover, such a transduction process has also been observed in living human cells exposed to EMS irradiation. These experiments suggest that coherent long range molecular interaction must be at work in water so to allow the observed features. The quantum field theory analysis of the phenomenon is presented.

Geometric invariants as detector of Hawking and Unruh effects and quantum field theory in curved space

We report on the recent results revealing the presence of geometric invariants in all the phenomena in which vacuum condensates appear and we show that Aharonov--Anandan phase can be used to provide the evidence of phenomena like Hawking and Unruh effects and to test some behavior of quantum field theory in curved space. A very precise quantum thermometer can be also built by using geometric invariants.

preprint2013arXiv

Probing Hawking and Unruh effects and quantum field theory in curved space by geometric invariants

The presence of noncyclic geometric invariant is revealed in all the phenomena where particle generation from vacuum or vacuum condensates appear. Aharonov--Anandan invariants then can help to study such systems and can represent a new tool to be used in order to provide laboratory evidence of phenomena particulary hard to be detected, such as Hawking and Unruh effects and some features of quantum field theory in curved space simulated by some graphene morphologies. It is finally suggested that a very precise quantum thermometer can be built by exploiting geometric invariants properties.

preprint2013arXiv

Spontaneous supersymmetry breaking probed by geometric invariants

The presence of the Aharonov-Anandan invariant in phenomena in which vacuum condensates are physically relevant can help to reveal the spontaneous supersymmetry breaking induced by condensates. The analysis is presented in the case of the Wess--Zumino model. The manifestation of the Aharonov-Anandan invariant of atoms and their superpartners, generated at non-zero temperature, could reveal the signature of SUSY violation in a recently proposed experimental setup based on an optical lattice in which SUSY is broken at non-zero temperature.

Theory of warm ionized gases: equation of state and kinetic Schottky anomaly

Based on accurate Lennard-Jones type interaction potentials, we derive a closed set of state equations for the description of warm atomic gases in the presence of ionization processes. The specific heat is predicted to exhibit peaks in correspondence to single and multiple ionizations. Such kinetic analogue in atomic gases of the Schottky anomaly in solids is enhanced at intermediate and low atomic densities. The case of adiabatic compression of noble gases is analyzed in detail and the implications on sonoluminescence are discussed. In particular, the predicted plasma electron density in a sonoluminescent bubble turns out to be in good agreement with the value measured in recent experiments.

Environment-induced heating in sonoluminescence experiments

This paper discusses a quantum optical heating mechanism which might play an important role in sonoluminescence experiments. We suggest that this mechanism occurs during the final stages of the bubble collapse phase and accompanies the thermodynamic heating due to the compression of the bubble. More concretely, it is shown that a weak but highly inhomogeneous electric field, as it occurs naturally during rapid bubble deformations, can increase the temperature of strongly confined particles by several orders of magnitude on a nanosecond time scale [A. Kurcz et al., New J. Phys. 11, 053001 (2009)]. Our model suggests that it is possible to control sonoluminescence experiments in ionic liquids with the help of appropriately detuned laser fields.

Spontaneous Supersymmetry Breaking Induced by Vacuum Condensates

We propose a novel mechanism of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking which relies upon an ubiquitous feature of Quantum Field Theory, vacuum condensates. Such condensates play a crucial rôle in many phenomena. Examples include Unruh effect, superconductors, particle mixing, and quantum dissipative systems. We argue that in all these phenomena supersymmetry, when present, is spontaneously broken. Evidence for our conjecture is given for the Wess--Zumino model, that can be considered an approximation to the supersymmetric extensions of the above mentioned systems. The magnitude of the effect is estimated for a recently proposed experimental setup based on an optical lattice.

preprint2011arXiv

Probing CPT violation in meson mixing by non-cyclic phase

The presence of non-cyclic phases is revealed in the time evolution of mixed meson systems. Such phases are related to the parameter $z$ describing the $CPT$ violation; moreover, a non zero phase difference between particle and antiparticle arises only in presence of $CPT$ symmetry breaking. Thus, a completely new test for the $CPT$ invariance can be provided by the study of such phases in mixed mesons. Systems which are particularly interesting for such an analysis are the $B_{s}^{0}-\bar{B}_{s}^{0}$ and the $K^{0}-\bar{K}^{0}$ ones. In order to introduce non-cyclic phases, some aspects of the formalism describing the mixed neutral mesons are analyzed. Since the effective Hamiltonian of systems like $K^{0}-\bar{K}^{0}$, $B^{0}-\bar{B}^{0}$, $B_{s}^{0}-\bar{B}_{s}^{0}$, $D^{0}-\bar{D}^{0}$ is non-Hermitian and non-normal, it is necessary to diagonalize it by utilizing the rules of non-Hermitian quantum mechanics.

Concentrating Energy by Measurement

In a recent article [A. Kurcz et al., Phys. Rev. A 81, 063821 (2010)] we predicted an energy concentrating mechanism in composite quantum systems. Its result is a non-zero stationary state photon emission rate even in the absence of external driving. Here we discuss the possible origin of the predicted effect. We attribute it to the presence of a non-trivial interaction between different system components and to repeated environment-induced photon measurements.

Energy concentration in composite quantum systems

The spontaneous emission of photons from optical cavities and from trapped atoms has been studied extensively in the framework of quantum optics. Theoretical predictions based on the rotating wave approximation (RWA) are in general in very good agreement with experimental findings. However, current experiments aim at combining better and better cavities with large numbers of tightly confined atoms. Here we predict an energy concentrating mechanism in the behavior of such a composite quantum system which cannot be described by the RWA. Its result is the continuous leakage of photons through the cavity mirrors, even in the absence of external driving. We conclude with a discussion of the predicted phenomenon in the context of thermodynamics.

preprint2010arXiv

Mixing-induced Spontaneous Supersymmetry Breaking

It is conjectured that flavor mixing furnishes a universal mechanism for the spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry. The conjecture is proved explicitly for the mixing of two Wess--Zumino $\mathcal{N}=1$ supermultiplets and arguments for its general validity are given. The mechanism relies on the fact that, despite mixing treats fermions and bosons symmetrically, both the fermionic and the bosonic zero point energies are shifted by a positive amount and this kind of shift does not respect supersymmetry.

On flavor conservation in weak interaction decays involving mixed neutrinos

In the context of quantum field theory (QFT), we compute the amplitudes of weak interaction processes such as $ W^{+} \rightarrow e^{+} + ν_{e}$ and $ W^{+} \rightarrow e^{+} + ν_μ$ by using different representations of flavor states for mixed neutrinos. Analyzing the short time limit of the above amplitudes, we find that the neutrino states defined in QFT as eigenstates of the flavor charges lead to results consistent with lepton charge conservation. On the contrary, the Pontecorvo flavor states produce a violation of lepton charge in the vertex, which is in contrast with what expected at tree level in the Standard Model.

Rotating wave approximation and entropy

This paper studies composite quantum systems, like atom-cavity systems and coupled optical resonators, in the absence of external driving by resorting to methods from quantum field theory. Going beyond the rotating wave approximation, it is shown that the usually neglected counter-rotating part of the Hamiltonian relates to the entropy operator and generates an irreversible time evolution. The vacuum state of the system is shown to evolve into a generalized coherent state exhibiting entanglement of the modes in which the counter-rotating terms are expressed. Possible consequences at observational level in quantum optics experiments are currently under study.

preprint2009arXiv

Quantum Optical Heating in Sonoluminescence Experiments

Sonoluminescence occurs when tiny bubbles rilled with noble gas atoms are driven by a sound wave. Each cycle of the driving field is accompanied by a collapse phase in which the bubble radius decreases rapidly until a short but very strong light flash is emitted. The spectrum of the light corresponds to very high temperatures and hints at the presence of a hot plasma core. While everyone accepts that the effect is real, the main energy focussing mechanism is highly controversial. Here we suggest that the heating of the bubble might be due to a weak but highly inhomogeneous electric field as it occurs during rapid bubble deformations [A. Kurcz et al. (submitted)]. It is shown that such a field couples the quantised motion of the atoms to their electronic states, thereby resulting in very high heating rates.

Neutrino mixing as a source for cosmological constant

We report on recent results showing that neutrino mixing may lead to a non-zero contribution to the cosmological constant. This contribution is of a completely different nature with respect to the usual one by a massive spinor field. We also study the problem of field mixing in Quantum Field Theory in curved space-time, for the case of a scalar field in the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric.

Phenomenology of flavor oscillations with non-perturbative effects from quantum field theory

We analyze phenomenological aspects of the quantum field theoretical formulation of meson mixing and obtain the exact oscillation formula in the presence of the decay. This formula is different from quantum mechanical formula by additional high-frequency oscillation terms. In the infinite volume limit, the space of the flavor quantum states is unitarily inequivalent to the space of energy eigenstates.
