Compressible Navier--Stokes system with the hard sphere pressure law in an exterior domain

We consider the motion of compressible Navier-Stokes fluids with the hard sphere pressure law around a rigid obstacle when the velocity and the density at infinity are non zero. This kind of pressure model is largely employed in various physical and industrial applications. We prove the existence of weak solution to the system in the exterior domain.

Consistency, convergence and error estimates for a mixed finite element / finite volume scheme to compressible Navier-Stokes equations with general inflow/outflow boundary data

We study convergence of a mixed finite element-finite volume scheme for the compressible Navier Stokes equations in the isentropic regime under the full range of the adiabatic coefficient gamma for the problem with general non zero inflow/outflow boundary conditions. We propose a modification of Karper scheme [Numer. Math. 125:441-510, 2013] in order to accommodate the non zero boundary data, prove existence of its solutions, establish the stability and uniform estimates, derive a convenient consistency formulation of the balance laws and use it to show the weak convergence of the numerical solutions to a dissipative solution with the Reynold defect introduced in Abbatiello et al. [Preprint Arxiv 1912.12896]. If the target system admits a strong solution then the convergence is strong towards the strong solution. Moreover, we establish the convergence rate of the strong convergence in terms of the size of the space discretization h (which is supposed to be comparable with the time step). In the case of non zero inflow/outflow boundary data, all results are new. The latter result is new also for the no-slip boundary conditions.

Construction of weak solutions to compressible Navier--Stokes equations with general inflow/outflow boundary conditions via a numerical approximation

The construction of weak solutions to compressible Navier-Stokes equations via a numerical method (including a rigorous proof of the convergence) is in a short supply, and so far, available only for one sole numerical scheme suggested in Karper [{\em Numer. Math.}, 125(3) : 441--510, 2013] for the no slip boundary conditions and the isentropic pressure with adiabatic coefficient $γ>3$. Here we consider the same problem for the general non zero inflow-outflow boundary conditions, which is definitely more appropriate setting from the point of view of applications, but which is essentially more involved as far as the existence of weak solutions is concerned. There is a few recent proofs of existence of weak solutions in this setting, but none of them is performed via a numerical method. The goal of this paper is to fill this gap. The existence of weak solutions on the continuous level requires several tools of functional and harmonic analysis and differential geometry whose numerical counterparts are not known. Our main strategy therefore consists in rewriting of the numerical scheme in its variational form modulo remainders and to apply and/or to adapt to the new variational formulation the tools developed in the theoretical analysis. In addition to the result, which is new, the synergy between numerical and theoretical analysis is the main originality of the present paper.

Globally bounded trajectories for the barotropic Navier-Stokes system with general boundary conditions

We consider the barotropic Navier--Stokes system describing the motion of a viscous compressible fluid interacting with the outer world through general in/out flux boundary conditions. We consider a hard--sphere type pressure EOS and show that all trajectories eventually enter a bounded absorbing set. In particular, the associated omega-limit sets are compact and support a stationary statistical solution.

Generalized solutions to models of compressible viscous fluids

We propose a new approach to models of general compressible viscous fluids based on the concept of dissipative solutions. These are weak solutions satisfying the underlying equations modulo a defect measure. A dissipative solution coincides with the strong solution as long as the latter exists (weak-strong uniqueness) and they solve the problem in the classical sense as soon as they are smooth (compatibility). We consider general models of compressible viscous fluids with non-linear viscosity tensor and non-homogeneous boundary conditions, for which the problem of existence of global-in-time weak/strong solutions is largely open.

Existence of weak solutions for compressible Navier-Stokes equations with entropy transport

We consider the compressible Navier-Stokes system with variable entropy. The pressure is a nonlinear function of the density and the entropy/potential temperature which, unlike in the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system, satisfies only the transport equation. We provide existence results within three alternative weak formulations of the corresponding classical problem. Our constructions hold for the optimal range of the adiabatic coefficients from the point of view of the nowadays existence theory.

A rigorous justification of the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations with geometric effects

We derive the 1D isentropic Euler and Navier-Stokes equations describing the motion of a gas through a nozzle of variable cross section as the asymptotic limit of the 3D isentropic Navier-Stokes system in a cylinder, the diameter of which tends to zero. Our method is based on the relative energy inequality satisfied by any weak solution of the 3D Navier-Stokes system and a variant of Korn-Poincare's inequality on thin channels that may be of independent interest.

Error estimates for a numerical approximation to the compressible barotropic Navier-Stokes equations

We present here a general method based on the investigation of the relative energy of the system, that provides an unconditional error estimate for the approximate solution of the barotropic Navier Stokes equations obtained by time and space discretization. We use this methodology to derive an error estimate for a specific DG/finite element scheme for which the convergence was proved in [27]. This is an extended version of the paper submitted to IMAJNA.

On singular limits arising in the scale analysis of stratified fluid flows

We study the low Mach low Freude numbers limit in the compressible Navier-Stokes equations and the transport equation for evolution of an entropy variable -- the potential temperature $Θ$. We consider the case of well-prepared initial data on "flat" tours and Reynolds number tending to infinity, and the case of ill-prepared data on an infinite slab. In both cases, we show that the weak solutions to the primitive system converge to the solution to the anelastic Navier-Stokes system and the transport equation for the second order variation of $Θ$

On the motion of viscous, compressible and heat-conducting liquids

We consider a system of equations governing the motion of a viscous, compressible, and heat conducting liquid-like fluid, with a general EOS of Mie-Grueneisen type. In addition, we suppose that the viscosity coefficients may decay to zero for large values of the temperature. We show the existence of global-in-time weak solution, derive a relative energy inequality, and compare the weak solutions with strong one emanating from the same initial data - the weak strong uniqueness property.

Robustness of strong solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes system

We consider the Navier-Stokes system describing the time evolution of a compressible barotropic fluid confined to a bounded spatial domain in the 3-D physical space, supplemented with the Navier's slip boundary conditions. It is shown that the class of global in time strong solutions is robust with respect to small perturbations of the initial data. Explicit qualitative estimates are given also in terms of the shape of the underlying physical domain, with applications to problems posed on thin cylinders.

Inviscid incompressible limits under mild stratification: A rigorous derivation of the Euler-Boussinesq system

We consider the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system in the singular regime of small Mach and large Reynolds and Peclet numbers, with ill prepared initial data on an unbounded domain in the three dimensional Euclidean space with a compact boundary. We perform the singular limit in the framework of weak solutions and identify the Euler-Boussinesq system as the target problem.

Multiple scales and singular limits for compressible rotating fluids with general initial data

We study the singular limit of a rotating compressible fluid described by a scaled barotropic Navier-Stokes system, where the Rossby number, the Mach number and the Froude number tend to 0 in a particular mutual rate while the Reynolds number tends to infinity. The inviscid planar Euler system is identified as the limit problem. The proof is based on the application of the method of relative entropies and careful analysis of oscillatory integrals describing the propagation of Rossby-acoustic waves.

preprint2013arXiv

Scale interactions in compressible rotating fluids

We study a triple singular limit for the scaled barotropic Navier-Stokes system modeling the motion of a rotating, compressible, and viscous fluid, where the Mach and Rossby numbers are proportional to a small parameter, while the Reynolds number becomes infinite. If the fluid is confined to an infinite slab bounded above and below by two parallel planes, the limit behavior is identified as a purely horizontal motion of an incompressible inviscid fluid, the evolution of which is described by an analogue of the Euler system.

Compressible fluid flows driven by stochastic forcing

We consider the Navier-Stokes system describing the motion of a compressible barotropic fluid driven by stochastic external forces. Our approach is semi-deterministic, based on solving the system for each fixed representative of the random variable and applying an abstract result on measurability of multi-valued maps. The class of admissible driving forces includes the (temporal) white noise and the random kicks, considered recently in the context of incompressible fluid models.

preprint2011arXiv

Multi-scale analysis of compressible viscous and rotating fluids

We study a singular limit for the compressible Navier-Stokes system when the Mach and Rossby numbers are proportional to certain powers of a small parameter $\ep$. If the Rossby number dominates the Mach number, the limit problem is represented by the 2-D incompressible Navier-Stokes system describing the horizontal motion of vertical averages of the velocity field. If they are of the same order then the limit problem turns out to be a linear, 2-D equation with a unique radially symmetric solution. The effect of the centrifugal force is taken into account.

On the vanishing electron-mass limit in plasma hydrodynamics in unbounded media

We consider the zero-electron-mass limit for the Navier-Stokes-Poisson system in unbounded spatial domains. Assuming smallness of the viscosity coefficient and ill-prepared initial data, we show that the asymptotic limit is represented by the incompressible Navier-Stokes system, with a Brinkman damping, in the case when viscosity is proportional to the electron-mass, and by the incompressible Euler system provided the viscosity is dominated by the electron mass. The proof is based on the RAGE theorem and dispersive estimates for acoustic waves, and on the concept of suitable weak solutions for the compressible Navier-Stokes system.

Relative entropies, suitable weak solutions, and weak strong uniqueness for the compressible Navier-Stokes system

We introduce the notion of relative entropy for the weak solutions of the compressible Navier-Stokes system. We show that any finite energy weak solution satisfies a relative entropy inequality for any pair of sufficiently smooth test functions. As a corollary we establish weak-strong uniqueness principle for the compressible Navier-Stokes system.

preprint2011arXiv

Weak-strong uniqueness property for the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system

The Navier-Stokes-Fourier system describing the motion of a compressible, viscous, and heat conducting fluid is known to possess global-in-time weak solutions for any initial data of finite energy. We show that a weak solution coincides with the strong solution, emanating from the same initial data, as long as the latter exists. In particular, strong solutions are unique within the class of weak solutions.
