Hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon $g-2$ in holographic QCD

We evaluate the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon with two light flavors in minimal hard-wall and soft-wall holographic QCD models, as well as in simple generalizations thereof, and compare with the rather precise results available from dispersive and lattice approaches. While holographic QCD cannot be expected to shed light on the existing small discrepancies between the latter, this comparison in turn provides useful information on the holographic models, which have been used to evaluate hadronic light-by-light contributions where errors in data-driven and lattice approaches are more sizable. In particular, in the hard-wall model that has recently been used to implement the Melnikov-Vainshtein short-distance constraint on hadronic light-by-light contributions, a matching of the hadronic vacuum polarization to the data-driven approach points to the same correction of parameters that has been proposed recently in order to account for next-to-leading order effects.

Holographic QCD and the muon anomalous magnetic moment

We review the recent progress made in using holographic QCD to study hadronic contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, in particular the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution, where the short-distance constraints associated with the axial anomaly are notoriously difficult to satisfy in hadronic models. This requires the summation of an infinite tower of axial vector mesons, which is naturally present in holographic QCD models, and indeed takes care of the longitudinal short-distance constraint due to Melnikov and Vainshtein. Numerically the results of simple hard-wall holographic QCD models point to larger contributions from axial vector mesons than assumed previously, while the predicted contributions from pseudo-Goldstone bosons agree nicely with data-driven approaches.

Neutron stars and phase diagram from a double hard-wall

Description of nuclear matter in the core of neutron stars eludes the main tools of investigation of QCD, such as perturbation theory and the lattice formulation of the theory. Recently, the application of the holographic paradigm (both via top-down and bottom-up models) to this task has led to many encouraging results, both qualitatively and quantitatively. We present our approach to the description of neutron star cores, relying on a simple model of the (double) hard-wall type: we discuss results concerning the nature of homogeneous nuclear matter at high density emerging from the model including a quarkyonic phase, the mass-radius relation for neutron stars, as well as the rather stiff equation of state we have found. We show how, despite the very simple model employed, for an appropriate calibration we are able to obtain neutron stars that only slightly fall short of the observational bounds on radius and tidal deformability.

Neutron stars and phase diagram in a hard-wall AdS/QCD model

We study the phase diagram of (large-$N_c$) QCD using a simplistic holographic hard-wall model with a dynamical scalar field and a homogeneous Ansatz representing a smeared instanton/baryon density. The resulting phase diagram is qualitatively consistent with expectations, including a mesonic, baryonic, quarkyonic, and quark-gluon plasma phase. As in other holographic models, we also find a baryonic popcorn transition, which appears at large chemical potential as a crossover. We then evaluate the nuclear matter equation of state, which turns out to be rather stiff with a large peaked sound velocity above the conformal limit, construct corresponding neutron stars using the TOV equations, and finally use a full numerical gravity/hydrodynamics computation to extract the gravitational wave signal of neutron star mergers.

Hydrodynamic attractor of a hybrid viscous fluid in Bjorken flow

The nonequilibrium evolution in a boost-invariant Bjorken flow of a hybrid viscous fluid model containing two interacting components with different viscosities, such that they represent strongly and weakly self-coupled sectors, is shown to be characterized by a hydrodynamic attractor which has an early-time behavior that is reminiscent of the so-called bottom-up thermalization scenario in heavy-ion collisions. The hydrodynamization times for the two sectors can differ strongly, with details depending on the curve realized on the two-dimensional attractor surface, which might account for different scenarios for small and large systems in nuclear collisions. The total system behaves like a single viscous fluid with a dynamically determined effective shear viscosity.

Witten-Veneziano mechanism and pseudoscalar glueball-meson mixing in holographic QCD

We revisit the $U(1)_A$ anomaly in the holographic model of low-energy QCD by Witten, Sakai, and Sugimoto, presenting a new and direct derivation of the Witten-Veneziano mechanism for generating the mass of the $η'$ through an anomalous mixing of the Ramond-Ramond $C_1$ field with the singlet component of the pseudoscalar mesons. The latter turns out to have a kinetic mixing with the normalizable modes of the $C_1$ field representing pseudoscalar glueballs, yielding additional vertices for their production and their decay that dominate over those of the unmixed case considered previously in the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model. The leading channel is predicted to be decay into two vector mesons, followed in importance by decay into three pseudoscalar mesons. The issue of production of pseudoscalar glueballs in radiative $J/ψ$ decays and in double diffractive processes is also discussed briefly.

Glueball Decay Rates in the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto Model

We revisit and extend previous calculations of glueball decay rates in the Sakai-Sugimoto model, a holographic top-down approach for QCD with chiral quarks based on D8 probe branes in Witten's holographic model of nonsupersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The rates for decays into two pions, two vector mesons, four pions, and the strongly suppressed decay into four pi0 are worked out quantitatively, using a range of the 't Hooft coupling which closely reproduces the decay rate of rho and omega mesons and also leads to a gluon condensate consistent with QCD sum rule calculations. The lowest holographic glueball, which arises from a rather exotic polarization of gravitons in the supergravity background, turns out to have a significantly lower mass and larger width than the two widely discussed glueball candidates f0(1500) and f0(1710). The lowest nonexotic and predominantly dilatonic scalar mode, which has a mass of 1487 MeV in the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model, instead provides a narrow glueball state, and we conjecture that only this nonexotic mode should be identified with a scalar glueball component of f0(1500) or f0(1710). Moreover the decay pattern of the tensor glueball is determined, which is found to have a comparatively broad total width when its mass is adjusted to around or above 2 GeV.

Semi-Holography for Heavy Ion Collisions: Self-Consistency and First Numerical Tests

We present an extended version of a recently proposed semi-holographic model for heavy-ion collisions, which includes self-consistent couplings between the Yang-Mills fields of the Color Glass Condensate framework and an infrared AdS/CFT sector, such as to guarantee the existence of a conserved energy-momentum tensor for the combined system that is local in space and time, which we also construct explicitly. Moreover, we include a coupling of the topological charge density in the glasma to the same of the holographic infrared CFT. The semi-holographic approach makes it possible to combine CGC initial conditions and weak-coupling glasma field equations with a simultaneous evolution of a strongly coupled infrared sector describing the soft gluons radiated by hard partons. As a first numerical test of the semi-holographic model we study the dynamics of fluctuating homogeneous color-spin-locked Yang-Mills fields when coupled to a homogeneous and isotropic energy-momentum tensor of the holographic IR-CFT, and we find rapid convergence of the iterative numerical procedure suggested earlier.

Constraints on the $ηη'$ decay rate of a scalar glueball from gauge/gravity duality

Predictions of glueball decay rates in the holographic Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model for low-energy QCD can be uniquely extended to include finite quark masses up to an as yet undetermined parameter in the coupling of glueballs to the nonanomalous part of the pseudoscalar mass terms. The assumption of a universal coupling of glueballs to mass terms of the full nonet of pseudoscalar mesons leads to flavor asymmetries in the decay rates of scalar glueballs that agree well with experimental data for the glueball candidate $f_0(1710)$ and implies a vanishing decay rate into $ηη'$ pairs, for which only upper bounds for the $f_0(1710)$ meson are known at present from experiment. Relaxing this assumption, the holographic model gives a tight correlation between the decay rates into pairs of pseudo-Goldstone bosons of same type and $ηη'$ pairs. If $Γ(G\to KK)/Γ(G\toππ)$ is kept within the range reported currently by the Particle Data Group for the $f_0(1710)$ meson, the rate $Γ(G\toηη')/Γ(G\toππ)$ is predicted to be $\lesssim 0.04$. The corresponding situation for $f_0(1500)$ is also discussed, which however is found to be much less compatible with the interpretation of a largely unmixed glueball.

Glueball Decay in the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto Model and Finite Quark Masses

We discuss recent results on the calculation of glueball decay rates in the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model, which favor the $f_0(1710)$ meson as a glueball candidate. The flavor asymmetric decay of $f_0(1710)$ is frequently attributed to a putative chiral suppression in glueball decays, which is however questionable in view of the large constituent quark masses induced by chiral symmetry breaking. We find that this can be explained by what we call nonchiral enhancement when finite quark masses are included in the holographic model, with good quantitative agreement with experimental data for $f_0(1710)$. Assuming the latter to indeed be a nearly pure glueball, the model makes essentially parameter-free and thus falsifiable predictions for its decay rates involving vector mesons and an upper limit on the $ηη'$ decay rate.

Glueball decay patterns in top-down holographic QCD

We discuss our results on scalar glueball decay in the top-down holographic Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model for low-energy QCD and compare with available experimental data, which appear to disfavor the glueball candidate $f_0(1500)$ but seem to be perfectly consistent with interpreting $f_0(1710)$ as a nearly unmixed glueball. The holographic model moreover makes definite predictions for future experiments.

Nonchiral enhancement of scalar glueball decay in the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model

We estimate the consequences of finite masses of pseudoscalar mesons on the decay rates of scalar glueballs in the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model, a top-down holographic model of low-energy QCD, by extrapolating from the calculable vertex of glueball fields and the eta' meson which follows from the Witten-Veneziano mechanism for giving mass to the latter. Evaluating the effect on the recently calculated decay rates of glueballs in the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model, we find a strong enhancement of the decay of scalar glueballs into kaons and eta mesons, in fairly close agreement with experimental data on the glueball candidate f0(1710).

Holographic Glueball Decay

We announce new results on glueball decay rates in the Sakai-Sugimoto model, a realization of holographic QCD from first principles that has only one coupling constant and an overall mass scale as free parameters. We extend a previous investigation by Hashimoto, Tan, and Terashima who have considered the lowest scalar glueball which arises from a somewhat exotic polarization of supergravity modes and whose mass is uncomfortably small in comparison with lattice results. On the other hand, the scalar glueball dual to the dilaton turns out to have a mass of about twice the mass of the rho meson (1487 MeV), very close to the scalar meson $f_0(1500)$ that is frequently interpreted as predominantly glue. Calculating the decay rate into two pions we find a surprisingly good agreement with experimental data for the $f_0(1500)$. We have also obtained decay widths for tensor and excited scalar glueballs, indicating universal narrowness.

The Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model: A brief review and some recent results

A brief review of the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model is given, which is a top-down holographic model of low-energy QCD with chiral quarks derived from type-IIA superstring theory. The main predictions of the model, in particular concerning meson spectra, the gluon condensate, the QCD string tension, the mass of the $η'$ and of baryons are discussed and compared quantitatively with available experimental and/or lattice results. Then some recent results of potential interest to the physics program at the future FAIR facility are presented: The spectrum of glueballs and their decay rates into pions, and the phase diagram of QCD at finite temperature, density, and magnetic field strength.

Longitudinal thermalization via the chromo-Weibel instability

Non-Abelian plasma instabilities play an important role in the non-equilibrium dynamics of a weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma. Using the discretized hard loop framework we calculate the time evolution of soft gluonic fields in a longitudinally free streaming background. Extrapolating our results to energies probed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions we find a pressure anisotropy that persists for a few fm/c. However, the chromofields quickly develop a Boltzmann longitudi- nal energy spectrum, suggesting fast longitudinal thermalization of the quark gluon plasma even though it remains momentum-space anisotropic. In this proceedings contribution we review our recent numerical results, present new results for the scaling of the isotropization time with the initial current fluctuation amplitude, and present tests of the gauge invariance of the extracted longitudinal spectra.

The chromo-Weibel instability in an expanding background

In this proceedings contribution we review recent calculations of the dynamics of the chromo-Weibel instability in the quark gluon plasma. This instability is present in gauge theories with a one-particle distribution function which is momentum-space anisotropic in the local rest frame. The conditions necessary for triggering this instability can be present already in the color-glass-condensate initial state or dynamically generated by the rapid longitudinal expansion of the matter created in a heavy-ion collision. Using the hard-loop framework we study the case that the one-particle distribution function possesses an arbitrary initial momentum anisotropy that increases in time due to longitudinal free streaming. The resulting three-dimensional dynamical equations for the chromofield evolution are solved numerically. We find that there is regeneration of the longitudinal pressure due to unstable plasma modes; nevertheless, the system seems to maintain a high-degree of momentum-space anisotropy. Despite this anisotropy, we find that there is rapid longitudinal thermalization of the plasma due to the non-linear mode couplings inherent in the unstable evolution.

Chiral transition in dense, magnetized matter

In the presence of a chemical potential, the effect of a magnetic field on chiral symmetry breaking goes beyond the well-known magnetic catalysis. Due to a subtle interplay with the chemical potential, the magnetic field may work not only in favor but also against the chirally broken phase. At sufficiently large coupling, the magnetic field favors the broken phase only for field strengths beyond any conceivable value in nature. Therefore, in the interior of magnetars, a possible transition from chirally broken hadronic matter to chirally symmetric quark matter might occur at smaller densities than previously thought.

preprint2012arXiv

Holographic baryonic matter in a background magnetic field

We discuss the effect of baryonic matter on the zero-temperature chiral phase transition at finite chemical potential in the presence of a background magnetic field. The main part of our study is done in the deconfined geometry of the Sakai-Sugimoto model, i.e., at large N_c and strong coupling, with non-antipodal separation of the flavor branes. We find that for not too large magnetic fields baryonic matter completely removes the chiral phase transition: chirally broken matter persists up to arbitrarily large chemical potential. At sufficiently large magnetic fields, baryonic matter becomes disfavored and mesonic matter is directly superseded by quark matter. In order to discuss the possible relevance of our results to QCD, we compute the baryon onset in a relativistic mean-field model including the anomalous magnetic moment and point out the differences to our holographic calculation.

Instabilities of an anisotropically expanding non-Abelian plasma: 3D+3V discretized hard-loop simulations

We study the (3+1)-dimensional evolution of non-Abelian plasma instabilities in the presence of a longitudinally expanding background of hard particles using the discretized hard loop framework. The free streaming background dynamically generates a momentum-space anisotropic distribution which is unstable to the rapid growth of chromomagnetic and chromoelectric fields. These fields produce longitudinal pressure that works to isotropize the system. Extrapolating our results to energies probed in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions we find, however, that a pressure anisotropy persists for a few fm/c. In addition, on time scales relevant to heavy-ion collisions we observe continued growth of plasma instabilities in the strongly non-Abelian regime. Finally, we find that the longitudinal energy spectrum is well-described by a Boltzmann distribution with increasing temperature at intermediate time scales.

Inverse magnetic catalysis in field theory and gauge-gravity duality

We investigate the surface of the chiral phase transition in the three-dimensional parameter space of temperature, baryon chemical potential and magnetic field in two different approaches, the field-theoretical Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model and the holographic Sakai-Sugimoto model. The latter is a top-down approach to a gravity dual of QCD with an asymptotically large number of colors and becomes, in a certain limit, dual to an NJL-like model. Our main observation is that, at nonzero chemical potential, a magnetic field can restore chiral symmetry, in apparent contrast to the phenomenon of magnetic catalysis. This "inverse magnetic catalysis" occurs in the Sakai-Sugimoto model and, for sufficiently large coupling, in the NJL model and is related to the physics of the lowest Landau level. While in most parts our discussion is a pedagogical review of previously published results, we include new analytical results for the NJL approach and a thorough comparison of inverse magnetic catalysis in the two approaches.

Probing Two Holographic Models of Strongly Coupled Anisotropic Plasma

Quark-gluon plasma during its initial phase after its production in heavy-ion collisions is expected to have substantial pressure anisotropies. In order to model this situation by a strongly coupled N=4 super-Yang-Mills plasma with fixed anisotropy by means of AdS/CFT duality, two models have been discussed in the literature. Janik and Witaszczyk have considered a geometry involving a comparatively benign naked singularity, while more recently Mateos and Trancanelli have used a regular geometry involving a nontrivial axion field dual to a parity-odd deformation of the gauge theory by a spatially varying theta parameter. We study the (rather different) implications of these two models on the heavy-quark potential as well as jet quenching and compare their respective predictions with those of weakly coupled anisotropic plasmas.

Electromagnetic signatures of a strongly coupled anisotropic plasma

In heavy-ion collisions, quark-gluon plasma is likely to be produced with sizable initial pressure anisotropy, which may leave an imprint on electromagnetic observables. In order to model a strongly coupled anisotropic plasma, we use the AdS/CFT correspondence to calculate the current-current correlator of a weakly gauged U(1) subgroup of R symmetry in an N=4 super-Yang-Mills plasma with a (temporarily) fixed anisotropy. The dual geometry, obtained previously by Janik and Witaszczyk, contains a naked singularity which however permits purely infalling boundary conditions and therefore the usual definition of a retarded correlator. We obtain numerical results for the cases of wave vector parallel and orthogonal to the direction of anisotropy, and we compare with previous isotropic results. In the (unphysical) limit of vanishing frequency (infinite time) we obtain a vanishing DC conductivity for any amount of anisotropy, but the anisotropic AC conductivities smoothly approach the isotropic case in the limit of high frequencies. We also discuss hard photon production from an anisotropic plasma and compare with existing hard-loop resummed calculations.

Inverse magnetic catalysis in dense holographic matter

We study the chiral phase transition in a magnetic field at finite temperature and chemical potential within the Sakai-Sugimoto model, a holographic top-down approach to (large-N_c) QCD. We consider the limit of a small separation of the flavor D8-branes, which corresponds to a dual field theory comparable to a Nambu-Jona Lasinio (NJL) model. Mapping out the surface of the chiral phase transition in the parameter space of magnetic field strength, quark chemical potential, and temperature, we find that for small temperatures the addition of a magnetic field decreases the critical chemical potential for chiral symmetry restoration - in contrast to the case of vanishing chemical potential where, in accordance with the familiar phenomenon of magnetic catalysis, the magnetic field favors the chirally broken phase. This "inverse magnetic catalysis" (IMC) appears to be associated with a previously found magnetic phase transition within the chirally symmetric phase that shows an intriguing similarity to a transition into the lowest Landau level. We estimate IMC to persist up to 10^{19} G at low temperatures.

Non-Abelian plasma instabilities: SU(3) vs. SU(2)

We present the first 3+1 dimensional simulations of non-Abelian plasma instabilities in gauge-covariant Boltzmann-Vlasov equations for the QCD gauge group SU(3) as well as for SU(4) and SU(5). The real-time evolution of instabilities for a plasma with stationary momentum-space anisotropy is studied using a hard-loop effective theory that is discretized in the velocities of hard particles. We find that the numerically less expensive calculations using the group SU(2) essentially reproduce the nonperturbative dynamics of non-Abelian plasma instabilities with higher rank gauge groups provided the mass parameters of the corresponding hard-loop effective theories are the same. In particular we find very similar spectra for the turbulent cascade that forms in the strong-field regime, which is associated with an approximately linear growth of energy in collective fields. The magnitude of the linear growth however turns out to increase with the number of colors.

Violation of the Holographic Viscosity Bound in a Strongly Coupled Anisotropic Plasma

We study the conductivity and shear viscosity tensors of a strongly coupled N=4 super-Yang-Mills plasma which is kept anisotropic by a theta parameter that depends linearly on one of the spatial dimensions. Its holographic dual is given by an anisotropic axion-dilaton-gravity background and has recently been proposed by Mateos and Trancanelli as a model for the pre-equilibrium stage of quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions. By applying the membrane paradigm which we also check by numerical evaluation of Kubo formula and lowest lying quasinormal modes, we find that the shear viscosity purely transverse to the direction of anisotropy saturates the holographic viscosity bound, whereas longitudinal shear viscosities are smaller, providing the first such example not involving higher-derivative theories of gravity and, more importantly, with fully known gauge-gravity correspondence.

Collective modes and instabilities in anisotropically expanding ultarelativistic plasmas

The time evolution of collective modes in an expanding ultarelativistic and (effectively) Abelian plasma is studied in the hard-loop approximation semi-analytically by means of integro-differential equations. A previous treatment is generalized to arbitrary orientation of wave vectors with respect to the direction of anisotropy and thus to a fully 3+1 dimensional situation. Moreover, initial fluctuations are allowed in both gauge fields and currents, which is necessary in the case of (stable) longitudinal modes. For unstable (Weibel) modes, this generalization of initial conditions reduces drastically the lower bound on the delay in the onset of growth that was found previously by considering only collective gauge fields as seeds. This makes it appear much more likely that non-Abelian plasma instabilities seeded by small initial rapidity fluctuations could play an important role in the early stage of heavy-ion collisions at LHC energies.

Holographic chiral currents in a magnetic field

In the presence of a quark chemical potential, a magnetic field induces an axial current in the direction of the magnetic field. We compute this current in the Sakai-Sugimoto model, a holographic model which, in a certain limit, is dual to large-N_c QCD. We also compute the analogous vector current, for which an axial chemical potential is formally introduced. This vector current can potentially be observed via charge separation in heavy-ion collisions. After implementing the correct axial anomaly in the Sakai-Sugimoto model we find an axial current in accordance with previous studies and a vanishing vector current, in apparent contrast to previous weak-coupling calculations.

preprint2009arXiv

Anomalies and the chiral magnetic effect in the Sakai-Sugimoto model

In the chiral magnetic effect an imbalance in the number of left- and right-handed quarks gives rise to an electromagnetic current parallel to the magnetic field produced in noncentral heavy-ion collisions. The chiral imbalance may be induced by topologically nontrivial gluon configurations via the QCD axial anomaly, while the resulting electromagnetic current itself is a consequence of the QED anomaly. In the Sakai-Sugimoto model, which in a certain limit is dual to large-N_c QCD, we discuss the proper implementation of the QED axial anomaly, the (ambiguous) definition of chiral currents, and the calculation of the chiral magnetic effect. We show that this model correctly contains the so-called consistent anomaly, but requires the introduction of a (holographic) finite counterterm to yield the correct covariant anomaly. Introducing net chirality through an axial chemical potential, we find a nonvanishing vector current only before including this counterterm. This seems to imply the absence of the chiral magnetic effect in this model. On the other hand, for a conventional quark chemical potential and large magnetic field, which is of interest in the physics of compact stars, we obtain a nontrivial result for the axial current that is in agreement with previous calculations and known exact results for QCD.

Advances in perturbative thermal field theory

The progress of the last decade in perturbative quantum field theory at high temperature and density made possible by the use of effective field theories and hard-thermal/dense-loop resummations in ultrarelativistic gauge theories is reviewed. The relevant methods are discussed in field theoretical models from simple scalar theories to non-Abelian gauge theories including gravity. In the simpler models, the aim is to give a pedagogical account of some of the relevant problems and their resolution, while in the more complicated but also more interesting models such as quantum chromodynamics, a summary of the results obtained so far are given together with references to a few most recent developments and open problems.
