An avoidance principle and Margulis functions for expanding translates of unipotent orbits

We prove an avoidance principle for expanding translates of unipotent orbits for some semisimple homogeneous spaces. In addition, we prove a quantitative isolation result of closed orbits and give an upper bound on the number of closed orbits of bounded volume. The proofs of our results rely on the construction of a Margulis function and the theory of finite dimensional representations of semisimple Lie groups.

Gaps of saddle connection directions for some branched covers of tori

We compute the gap distribution of directions of saddle connections for two classes of translation surfaces. One class will be the translation surfaces arising from gluing two identical tori along a slit. These yield the first explicit computations of gap distributions for non-lattice translation surfaces. We show that this distribution has support at 0 and quadratic tail decay. We also construct examples of translation surfaces in any genus $d>1$ that have the same gap distribution as the gap distribution of two identical tori glued along a slit. The second class we consider are twice-marked tori and saddle connections between distinct marked points. These results can be interpreted as the gap distribution of slopes of affine lattices. We obtain our results by translating the question of gap distributions to a dynamical question of return times to a transversal under the horocycle flow on an appropriate moduli space.

W-measurable sensitivity of semigroup actions

This paper studies the notion of W-measurable sensitivity in the context of semigroup actions. W-measurable sensitivity is a measurable generalization of sensitive dependence on initial conditions. In 2012, Grigoriev et. al. proved a classification result of conservative ergodic dynamical systems that states all are either W-measurably sensitive or act by isometries with respect to some metric and have refined structure. We generalize this result to a class of semigroup actions. Furthermore, a counterexample is provided that shows W-measurable sensitivity is not preserved under factors. We also consider the restriction of W-measurably sensitive semigroup actions to sub-semigroups and show that the restriction remains W-measurably sensitive when the sub-semigroup is large enough (e.g. when the sub-semigroups are syndetic or thick).

Generic extensions and generic Polynomials for multiplicative groups

Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a finite-dimensional algebra over a finite field $\mathbf{F}_q$ and let $G=\mathcal{A}^\times$ be the multiplicative group of $\mathcal{A}$. In this paper, we construct explicitly a generic Galois $G$-extension $S/R$, where $R$ is a localized polynomial ring over $\mathbf{F}_q$, and an explicit generic polynomial for $G$ in $\dim_{\mathbf{F}_q}(\mathcal{A})$ parameters.

Invariant Measures for Hybrid Stochastic Systems

In this paper, we seek to understand the behavior of dynamical systems that are perturbed by a parameter that changes discretely in time. If we impose certain conditions, we can study certain embedded systems within a hybrid system as time-homogeneous Markov processes. In particular, we prove the existence of invariant measures for each embedded system and relate the invariant measures for the various systems through the flow. We calculate these invariant measures explicitly in several illustrative examples.

Limit and Morse Sets for Deterministic Hybrid Systems

The term "hybrid system" refers to a continuous time dynamical system that undergoes Markovian perturbations at discrete time intervals. In this paper, we find that under the right formulation, a hybrid system can be treated as a dynamical system on a compact space. This allows one to study its limit sets. We examine the Morse decompositions of hybrid systems, find a sufficient condition for the existence of a non-trivial Morse decomposition, and study the Morse sets of such a decomposition. Finally, we consider the case in which the Markovian perturbations are small, showing that trajectories in a hybrid system with small perturbations behave similarly to those of the unperturbed dynamical system.
