Artinian algebras and Jordan type

The Jordan type of an element $\ell$ of the maximal ideal of an Artinian k-algebra A acting on an A-module M of k-dimension n, is the partition of n given by the Jordan block decomposition of the multiplication map $m_\ell$ on M. In general the Jordan type has more information than whether the pair $(\ell,M)$ is strong or weak Lefschetz. We develop basic properties of the Jordan type and their loci for modules over graded or local Artinian algebras. We as well study the relation of generic Jordan type of $A$ to the Hilbert function of $A$. We introduce and study a finer invariant, the Jordan degree type. In our last sections we give an overview of topics such as the Jordan types for Nagata idealizations, for modular tensor products, and for free extensions, including examples and some new results. We as well propose open problems.

Lefschetz properties of some codimension three Artinian Gorenstein algebras

Codimension two Artinian algebras $A$ have the strong and weak Lefschetz properties provided the characteristic is zero or greater than the socle degree. It is open to what extent such results might extend to codimension three AG algebras - the most promising results so far have concerned the weak Lefschetz property for such algebras. We here show that every standard-graded codimension three Artinian Gorenstein algebra $A$ having low maximum value of the Hilbert function - at most six - has the strong Lefschetz property, provided that the characteristic is zero. When the characteristic is greater than the socle degree of $A$, we show that $A$ is almost strong Lefschetz. This quite modest result is nevertheless arguably the most encompassing so far concerning the strong Lefschetz property for graded codimension three AG algebras.

Nets of Conics and associated Artinian algebras of length 7

We classify the orbits of nets of conics under the action of the projective linear group and we determine the specializations of these orbits, using geometric and algebraic methods. We study related geometric questions, as the parametrization of planar cubics. We show that Artinian algebras of Hilbert function H=(1,3,3,0) determined by nets, can be smoothed - deformed to a direct sum of fields; and that algebras of Hilbert function H=(1,r,2,0), determined by pencils of quadrics, can also be smoothed. In a Historical Appendix A we describe related work prior to 1977. In an Update Appendix B we survey some developments since 1977 concerning nets of conics, related geometry, and deformations of Artinian algebras of small length.

Free Extensions and Jordan type

Free extensions of commutative Artinian algebras were introduced by T. Harima and J. Watanabe. The Jordan type of a multiplication map $m$ by a nilpotent element of an Artinian algebra is the partition determining the sizes of the blocks in a Jordan matrix for $m$. We show that a free extension of the Artinian algebra $A$ with fibre $B$ is a deformation of the usual tensor product. This has consequences for the generic Jordan types of $A,B$ and $C$, showing that the Jordan type of $C$ is at least that of the usual tensor product in the dominance order. We give applications to algebras of relative coinvariants of linear group actions on a polynomial ring.

Strata of vector spaces of forms in k[x,y] and of rational curves in P^k

Consider the polynomial ring R=k[x,y] over an infinite field k and the subspace R_j of degree-j homogeneous polynomials. The Grassmanian G=Grass (R_j,d) parametrizes the vector spaces V in R_j having dimension d. The strata Grass_H(R_j,d) in G determined by the Hilbert function H=H(R/(V)) or, equivalently, by the Betti numbers of the algebra R/(V), are locally closed and irreducible of known dimension. We had previously shown also that they satisfy a frontier property that the closure of a stratum is its union with lower strata [I1,I2]. Each stratum corresponds to a partition, and the the poset of strata under closure is isomorphic to the poset of corresponding partitions in the Bruhat order. They are coarser than the strata defined by D. Cox, A. Kustin, C. Polini, and B.Ulrich [CKPU] recently that are determined in part by singularities of the rational curve determined by V. We explain these results and give examples to make them more accessible. We also generalize a result of D. Cox, T. Sederberg and F. Chen [CSC] and another of C. D'Andrea [D] concerning the dimension and closure of families of parametrized rational curves from planar to higher dimensional embeddings.

Bound on the Jordan type of a generic nilpotent matrix commuting with a given matrix

It is well-known that a nilpotent n by n matrix B is determined up to conjugacy by a partition of n formed by the sizes of the Jordan blocks of B. We call this partition the Jordan type of B. We obtain partial results on the following problem: for any partition P of n describe the type Q(P) of a generic nilpotent matrix commuting with a given nilpotent matrix of type P. A conjectural description for Q(P) was given by P. Oblak and restated by L. Khatami. In this paper we prove "half" of this conjecture by showing that this conjectural type is less than or equal to Q(P) in the dominance order on partitions.

Inverse Systems of Zero-dimensional Schemes in P^n

The authors construct the global Macaulay inverse system for a zero-dimensional subscheme Z of projective n-space P^n, from the local inverse systems of the irreducible components of Z. They show that when Z is locally Gorenstein a generic homogeneous form F of degree d apolar to Z determines Z when d is larger than an invariant b(Z). They also show that a natural upper bound for the Hiilbert function of Gorenstein Artin quotient of the coordinate ring is achieved for large socle degree. They show the uniqueness of generalized additive decompositions of a homogeneous form F into powers of linear forms, under suitable hypotheses. They include many examples.
