Twisted Blanchfield pairings and twisted signatures II: Relation to Casson-Gordon invariants

This paper studies twisted signature invariants and twisted linking forms, with a view towards obstructions to knot concordance. Given a knot $K$ and a representation $ρ$ of the knot group, we define a twisted signature function $σ_{K,ρ} \colon S^1 \to \mathbb{Z}$. This invariant satisfies many of the same algebraic properties as the classical Levine-Tristram signature $σ_K$. When the representation is abelian, $σ_{K,ρ}$ recovers $σ_K$, while for appropriate metabelian representations, $σ_{K,ρ}$ is closely related to the Casson-Gordon invariants. Additionally, we prove satellite formulas for $σ_{K,ρ}$ and for twisted Blanchfield forms.

A note on the weak splitting number

The weak splitting number $wsp(L)$ of a link $L$ is the minimal number of crossing changes needed to turn $L$ into a split union of knots. We describe conditions under which certain $\mathbb{R}$-valued link invariants give lower bounds on $wsp(L)$. This result is used both to obtain new bounds on $wsp(L)$ in terms of the multivariable signature and to recover known lower bounds in terms of the $τ$ and $s$-invariants. We also establish new obstructions using link Floer homology and apply all these methods to compute $wsp$ for all but two of the $130$ prime links with $9$ or fewer crossings.

Stably slice disks of links

We define the stabilizing number $\operatorname{sn}(K)$ of a knot $K \subset S^3$ as the minimal number $n$ of $S^2 \times S^2$ connected summands required for $K$ to bound a nullhomotopic locally flat disc in $D^4 \# n S^2 \times S^2$. This quantity is defined when the Arf invariant of $K$ is zero. We show that $\operatorname{sn}(K)$ is bounded below by signatures and Casson-Gordon invariants and bounded above by the topological $4$-genus $g_4^{\operatorname{top}}(K)$. We provide an infinite family of examples with $\operatorname{sn}(K)<g_4^{\operatorname{top}}(K)$.

Splitting numbers and signatures

The splitting number of a link is the minimal number of crossing changes between different components required to convert it into a split link. We obtain a lower bound on the splitting number in terms of the (multivariable) signature and nullity. Although very elementary and easy to compute, this bound turns out to be suprisingly efficient. In particular, it makes it a routine check to recover the splitting number of 129 out of the 130 prime links with at most 9 crossings. Also, we easily determine 16 of the 17 splitting numbers that were studied by Batson and Seed using Khovanov homology, and later computed by Cha, Friedl and Powell using a variety of techniques. Finally, we determine the splitting number of a large class of 2-bridge links which includes examples recently computed by Borodzik and Gorsky using a Heegaard Floer theoretical criterion.
