Decentralized, not Dehumanized in the Metaverse: Bringing Utility to NFTs through Multimodal Interaction

User Interaction for NFTs (Non-fungible Tokens) is gaining increasing attention. Although NFTs have been traditionally single-use and monolithic, recent applications aim to connect multimodal interaction with human behaviour. This paper reviews the related technological approaches and business practices in NFT art. We highlight that multimodal interaction is a currently under-studied issue in mainstream NFT art, and conjecture that multimodal interaction is a crucial enabler for decentralization in the NFT community. We propose a framework that combines a bottom-up approach with AI multimodal process. Through this framework, we put forward integrating human behaviour data into generative NFT units, as "multimodal interactive NFT". Our work displays the possibilities of NFTs in the art world, beyond the traditional 2D and 3D static content.

Infrared and visible image fusion based on Multi-State Contextual Hidden Markov Model

The traditional two-state hidden Markov model divides the high frequency coefficients only into two states (large and small states). Such scheme is prone to produce an inaccurate statistical model for the high frequency subband and reduces the quality of fusion result. In this paper, a fine-grained multi-state contextual hidden Markov model (MCHMM) is proposed for infrared and visible image fusion in the non-subsampled Shearlet domain, which takes full consideration of the strong correlations and level of details of NSST coefficients. To this end, an accurate soft context variable is designed correspondingly from the perspective of context correlation. Then, the statistical features provided by MCHMM are utilized for the fusion of high frequency subbands. To ensure the visual quality, a fusion strategy based on the difference in regional energy is proposed as well for lowfrequency subbands. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve a superior performance compared with other fusion methods in both subjective and objective aspects.

BAUM: A DNA Assembler by Adaptive Unique Mapping and Local Overlap-Layout-Consensus

Genome assembly from the high-throughput sequencing (HTS) reads is a fundamental yet challenging computational problem. An intrinsic challenge is the uncertainty caused by the widespread repetitive elements. Here we get around the uncertainty using the notion of uniquely mapped (UM) reads, which motivated the design of a new assembler BAUM. It mainly consists of two types of iterations. The first type of iterations constructs initial contigs from a reference, say a genome of a species that could be quite distant, by adaptive read mapping, filtration by the reference's unique regions, and reference updating. A statistical test is proposed to split the layouts at possible structural variation sites. The second type of iterations includes mapping, scaffolding/contig-extension, and contig merging. We extend each contig by locally assembling the reads whose mates are uniquely mapped to an end of the contig. Instead of the de Bruijn graph method, we take the overlap-layout-consensus (OLC) paradigm. The OLC is implemented by parallel computation, and has linear complexity with respect to the number of contigs. The adjacent extended contigs are merged if their alignment is confirmed by the adjusted gap distance. Throughout the assembling, the mapping criterion is selected by probabilistic calculations. These innovations can be used complementary to the existing de novo assemblers. Applying this novel method to the assembly of wild rice Oryza longistaminata genome, we achieved much improved contig N50, 18.8k, compared with other assemblers. The assembly was further validated by contigs constructed from an independent library of long 454 reads.
