A few remarks on thermomechanics

We develop a global setting for modeling thermo-visco-elastic materials that satisfy the principles of thermodynamics and are properly invariant. This setting encompasses many known solid and fluid models, as well as new models with internal variables that generalize the Maxwell rheological model. Complex fluid models such as the Oldroyd B model are shown to belong to the above general family of models. The specific Oldroyd B model is however found to be seriously lacking in terms of satisfying the second principle of thermodynamics. On the contrary, a second complex fluid model based on the Zaremba-Jaumann derivative is shown to satisfy the second principle of thermodynamics.

Plates with incompatible prestrain of higher order

We study the effective elastic behaviour of the incompatibly prestrained thin plates, characterized by a Riemann metric $G$ on the reference configuration. We assume that the prestrain is "weak", i.e. it induces scaling of the incompatible elastic energy $E^h$ of order less than $h^2$ in terms of the plate's thickness $h$. We essentially prove two results. First, we establish the $Γ$-limit of the scaled energies $h^{-4}E^h$ and show that it consists of a von Kármán-like energy, given in terms of the first order infinitesimal isometries and of the admissible strains on the surface isometrically immersing $G_{2\times 2}$ (i.e. the prestrain metric on the midplate) in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Second, we prove that in the scaling regime $E^h\sim h^β$ with $β>2$, there is no other limiting theory: if $\inf h^{-2} E^h \to 0$ then $\inf E^h\leq Ch^4$, and if $\inf h^{-4}E^h\to 0$ then $G$ is realizable and hence $\min E^h = 0$ for every $h$.

A constitutive law for cross-linked actin networks by homogenization techniques

Inspired by experiments on the actin driven propulsion of micrometer sized beads we develop and study a minimal mechanical model of a two-dimensional network of stiff elastic filaments grown from the surface of a cylinder. Starting out from a discrete model of the network structure and of its microscopic mechanical behavior we derive a macroscopic constitutive law by homogenization techniques. We calculate the axisymmetric equilibrium state and study its linear stability depending on the microscopic mechanical properties. We find that thin networks are linearly stable, whereas thick networks are unstable. The critical thickness for the change in stability depends on the ratio of the microscopic elastic constants. The instability is induced by the increase in the compressive load on the inner network layers as the thickness of the network increases. The here employed homogenization approach combined with more elaborate microscopic models can serve as a basis to study the evolution of polymerizing actin networks and the mechanism of actin driven motion.
