Simulation of the Polarized Quark Fragmentation with Vector Meson Production

The recently developed quantum mechanical string+${}^3P_0$ model of polarized quark fragmentation with pseudoscalar and vector meson production has been implemented in a stand alone Monte Carlo program. The simulation enables the detailed study of the quark spin dependent effects in the fragmentation process such as the transverse spin asymmetries. In particular, it allows to investigate the effects of the production and decay of vector mesons on the Collins and dihadron asymmetries of the observed hadrons, and to study the still unknown Collins effect for vector mesons. The main results of the Monte Carlo simulations obtained so far are summarized and the comparison with the existing experimental data on SIDIS and $e^+e^-$ annihilation to hadrons processes are presented.

Extracting the transversity distributions from single-hadron and dihadron production

We present a point-by-point determination of the valence transversity distributions from two different types of processes: single-hadron production and dihadron production, both in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and e+e- annihilation. The extraction is based on some simple assumptions and does not require any parametrization. The transversity distributions obtained from Collins effect in single-hadron production and from interference effects in dihadron production are found to be compatible with each other.

COMPASS results on Collins and Sivers asymmetries for charged hadrons

The study of transverse spin and transverse momentum effects is an important part of the scientific program of COMPASS, a fixed target experiment at the CERN SPS taking data since 2002. The studies are carried on by measuring the hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) of 160 GeV/c muons off different targets. Among the possible asymmetries in the hadron azimuthal distributions, particularly interesting are the Collins and Sivers asymmetries which the COMPASS Collaboration has measured using transversely polarised deuteron and proton targets. The new results for charged pions and kaons obtained from the 2010 run with a transversely polarised proton target are presented.

Transverse-Spin and Transverse-Momentum Effects in High-Energy Processes

The state of the art concerning transverse-spin and transverse-momentum phenomena in hard hadronic reactions is reviewed. An account is given of single-spin and azimuthal asymmetries in semiinclusive deep inelastic scattering, e^+ e^- annihilation, Drell-Yan production, and hadroproduction. The ongoing experiments and the main theoretical frameworks are described in the first part of the paper. The second part is devoted to the experimental findings and their phenomenological interpretations. A brief discussion of the perspectives of future measurements is finally presented.
