Struwe-like solutions for an evolutionary model of magnetoviscoelastic fluids

In this work we investigate the existence and uniqueness of Struwe-like solutions for a system of partial differential equations modeling the dynamics of magnetoviscoelastic fluids. The considered system couples a Navier-Stokes type equation with a dissipative equation for the deformation tensor and a Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert type equation for the magnetization field. The main purpose is to establish a well-posedness theory in a two-dimensional periodic domain under standard assumption of critical regularity for the (possibly large) initial data. We prove that the considered weak solutions are everywhere smooth, except for a discrete set of time values. The proof of the uniqueness is based on suitable energy estimates for the solutions within a functional framework which is less regular than the one of the Struwe energy level. These estimates rely on several techniques of harmonic analysis and paradifferential calculus.

Global existence of weak solutions to a diffuse interface model for magnetic fluids

This article is devoted to the derivation and analysis of a system of partial differential equations modeling a diffuse interface flow of two Newtonian incompressible magnetic fluids. The system consists of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with an evolutionary equation for the magnetization vector and the Cahn-Hilliard equations. We show global in time existence of weak solutions to the system using the time discretization method.

Existence of weak solutions to an evolutionary model for magnetoelasticity

We prove existence of weak solutions to an evolutionary model derived for magnetoelastic materials. The model is phrased in Eulerian coordinates and consists in particular of (i) a Navier-Stokes equation that involves magnetic and elastic terms in the stress tensor obtained by a variational approach, of (ii) a regularized transport equation for the deformation gradient and of (iii) the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation for the dynamics of the magnetization. The proof is built on a Galerkin method and a fixed-point argument. It is based on ideas from F.-H. Lin and the third author for systems modeling the flow of liquid crystals as well as on methods by G. Carbou and P. Fabrie for solutions of the Landau-Lifshitz equation.

On a Gamma-convergence analysis of a quasicontinuum method

We investigate a quasicontinuum method by means of analytical tools. More precisely, we compare a discrete-to-continuum analysis of an atomistic one-dimensional model problem with a corresponding quasicontinuum model. We consider next and next-to-nearest neighbour interactions of Lennard-Jones type and focus on the so-called quasinonlocal quasicontinuum approximation. Our analysis, which applies $Γ$-convergence techniques, shows that, in an elastic setting, minimizers and the minimal energies of the fully atomistic problem and its related quasicontinuum approximation have the same limiting behaviour as the number of atoms tends to infinity. In case of fracture this is in general not true. It turns out that the choice of representative atoms in the quasicontinuum approximation has an impact on the fracture energy and on the location of fracture. We give sufficient conditions for the choice of representative atoms such that, also in case of fracture, the minimal energies of the fully atomistic energy and its quasicontinuum approximation coincide in the limit and such that the crack is located in the atomistic region of the quasicontinuum model as desired.

A discrete to continuum analysis of dislocations in nanowire heterostructures

Epitaxially grown heterogeneous nanowires present dislocations at the interface between the phases if their radius is big. We consider a corresponding variational discrete model with quadratic pairwise atomic interaction energy. By employing the notion of Gamma-convergence and a geometric rigidity estimate, we perform a discrete to continuum limit and a dimension reduction to a one-dimensional system. Moreover, we compare a defect-free model and models with dislocations at the interface and show that the latter are energetically convenient if the thickness of the wire is sufficiently large.

Non-laminate Microstructures in Monoclinic-I Martensite

We study the symmetrised rank-one convex hull of monoclinic-I martensite (a twelve-variant material) in the context of geometrically-linear elasticity. We construct sets of T3s, which are (non-trivial) symmetrised rank-one convex hulls of three-tuples of pairwise incompatible strains. Moreover we construct a five-dimensional continuum of T3s and show that its intersection with the boundary of the symmetrised rank-one convex hull is four-dimensional. We also show that there is another kind of monoclinic-I martensite with qualitatively different semi-convex hulls which, so far as we know, has not been experimentally observed. Our strategy is to combine understanding of the algebraic structure of symmetrised rank-one convex cones with knowledge of the faceting structure of the convex polytope formed by the strains.

On the Allen-Cahn/Cahn-Hilliard system with a geometrically linear elastic energy

We present an extension of the Allen-Cahn/Cahn-Hilliard system which incorporates a geometrically linear ansatz for the elastic energy of the precipitates. The model contains both the elastic Allen-Cahn system and the elastic Cahn-Hilliard system as special cases and accounts for the microstructures on the microscopic scale. We prove the existence of weak solutions to the new model for a general class of energy functionals. We then give several examples of functionals that belong to this class. This includes the energy of geometrically linear elastic materials for D<3. Moreover we show this for D=3 in the setting of scalar-valued deformations, which corresponds to the case of anti-plane shear. All this is based on explicit formulas for relaxed energy functionals newly derived in this article for D=1 and D=3. In these cases we can also prove uniqueness of the weak solutions.
