Generalized uncertainty principle in bar detectors of gravitational waves

At present the gravitational waves detectors achieve the sensitivity to detect the length variation ($δL$), $\mathcal{O} \approx 10^{-17}-10^{-21}$ meter. Recently a more stringent upperbound on the dimensionless parameter $β_0$, bearing the effect of generalized uncertainty principle has been given which corresponds to the intermediate length scale $l_{im}= \sqrt{β_0} l_{pl} \sim 10^{-23} m$. Hence it becomes quite obvious to search for the generalized uncertainty principle by observing the response of the vibrations of phonon modes in such resonant detectors in the near future. Therefore, we calculate the resonant frequencies and transition rates induced by the incoming gravitational waves on these detectors in the generalized uncertainty principle framework. This presentation is based on the work published in \cite{sb2}.

Generalized uncertainty principle in resonant detectors of gravitational waves

With the direct detection of gravitational waves by advanced LIGO detector, a new "window" to quantum gravity phenomenology has been opened. At present, these detectors achieve the sensitivity to detect the length variation ($δL$), $\mathcal{O} \approx 10^{-17}-10^{-21}$ meter. Recently a more stringent upperbound on the dimensionless parameter $β_0$, bearing the effect of generalized uncertainty principle has been given which corresponds to the intermediate length scale $l_{im}= \sqrt{β_0} l_{pl} \sim 10^{-23} m$. Hence the flavour of the generalized uncertainty principle can be realised by observing the response of the vibrations of phonon modes in such resonant detectors in the near future. In this paper, therefore, we calculate the resonant frequencies and transition rates induced by the incoming gravitational waves on these detectors in the generalized uncertainty principle framework. It is observed that the effects of the generalized uncertainty principle bears its signature in both the time independent and dependent part of the gravitational wave-harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian. We also make an upper bound estimate of the GUP parameter.

Emergent Universe with particle production

The possibility of an emergent universe solution to Einstein's field equations allowing for an irreversible creation of matter at the expense of the gravitational field is shown. With the universe being chosen as spatially flat FRW spacetime together with equation of state proposed in [17], the solution exists when the ratio of the phenomenological matter creation rate to the number density times the Hubble parameter is a number $β$ of the order of unity and independent of time. The thermodynamic behaviour is also determined for this solution. Interestingly, we also find that an emergent universe scenario is present with usual equation of state in cosmology when the matter creation rate is chosen to be a constant. More general class of emergent universe solutions are also discussed.

Non-minimally coupled quintessence DE model with a cubic galileon term --A Dynamical System Analysis

We consider a scalar field which is generallly non-minimally coupled to gravity and has a characteristic cubic Galilean-like term in the kinetic part of the action, in presence of a generic self-interaction as a candidate Dark Energy model. The system is dynamically analyzed and novel fixed points with perturbative stability are demonstrated. Evolution of the system is numerically studied near a novel fixed point which owes its existance to the Galileon character of the model. It turns out that demanding the stability of this novel fixed points puts strong restriction on the allowed non-minimal coupling and the choice of the self-interaction. The evolutions of the system is charted out on a $r-s$ diagram. The evolution of the equation of state parameter is studied which shows that our model predicts accelerated universe throughout and the phantom limit is only approached closely but never crossed. Our result thus extends the findings of of \cite{Cubic_Galileon_NMC} for more general NMC than linear and quadratic couplings.

On the Landau system in noncommutative phase-space

We consider a charged particle moving in a two dimensional plane in the presence of a background magnetic field perpendicular to the plane, i.e. the Landau system in a phase-space where the coordinates and momenta both follow canonical noncommutative algebra. A set of generalized transformations is derived in this paper which maps the NC problem to an equivalent commutative problem. In this set up, we study the Aharonov-Bohm effect and the Landau levels. For the Aharonov-Bohm effect, the phase-shift is found to contain corrections due to phase-space noncommutativity and also depends on the scaling parameter appearing in the generalized transformations. The result agrees with those in the literature upto first order in the noncommutative parameters when proper choice of the scaling parameter is taken. We then obtain the magnetic length and degeneracy of the Landau levels, both are seen to admit NC corrections. The Landau levels are seen to get altered due to phase-space noncommutativity as well. This energy spectrum of the Landau system is computed from two different perspectives, namely the explicit NC variable approach and the commutative-equivalent approach. The results match exactly, solidifying the evidence in favour of the equivalence of the two approaches.

Resonant-bar detectors of gravitational wave as possible probe of the noncommutative structure of space

We report the plausibility of using quantum mechanical transitions, induced by the combined effect of Gravitational wave (GW) and noncommutative (NC) structure of space, among the states of a 2-dimensional harmonic oscillator, to probe the spatial NC geometry. The phonon modes excited by the passing GW within the resonant bar-detector are formally identical to forced harmonic oscillator and they represent a length variation of roughly the same order of magnitude as the characteristic length-scale of spatial noncommutativity estimated from the phenomenological upper bound of the NC parameter. This motivates our present work. We employ various GW wave-forms that are typically expected from possible astronomical sources. We find that the transition probablities are quite sensitive to the nature of polarization of the GW. We also elaborate on the particular type of sources of GW, radiation from which can induce transitions that can be used as effective probe of the spatial noncommutative structure.

Generalized uncertainty principle and black hole thermodynamics

We study the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström black hole thermodynamics using the simplest form of the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) proposed in the literature. The expressions for the mass-temperature relation, heat capacity and entropy are obtained in both cases from which the critical and remnant masses are computed. Our results are exact and reveal that these masses are identical and larger than the so called singular mass for which the thermodynamics quantities become ill-defined. The expression for the entropy reveals the well known area theorem in terms of the horizon area in both cases upto leading order corrections from GUP. The area theorem written in terms of a new variable which can be interpreted as the reduced horizon area arises only when the computation is carried out to the next higher order correction from GUP.

Interaction of a circularly polarised gravitational wave with a charged particle in a static magnetic background

Interaction of a charged particle in a static magnetic background, i.e., a Landau system with circularly polarised gravitational wave (GW) is studied quantum mechanically in the long wavelength and low velocity limit. We quantize the classical Hamiltonian following \cite{speli}. The rotating polarization vectors of the circularly polarized GW are employed to form a unique directional triad which served as the coordinate axes. The Schrodinger equations for the system are cast in the form of a set of coupled linear differential equations. This system is solved by iterative technique. We compute the time-evolution of the position and momentum expectation values of the particle. The results show that the resonance behaviour obtained earlier\cite{emgw_classical} by classical treatements of the system has a quantum analogue not only for the linearly polarized GW \cite{emgw_1_lin}, but for circularly polarized GW as well.

Noncommutative quantum mechanics of simple matter systems interacting with circularly polarized gravitational waves

The response of a test particle, both for the free case and under the harmonic oscillator potential, to circularly polarized gravitational waves is investigated in a noncommutative quantum mechanical setting. The system is quantized following the prescription in \cite{ncgw1}. Standard algebraic techniques are then employed to solve the Hamiltonian of the system. The solutions, in both cases, show signatures of the coordinate noncommutativity. In the harmonic oscillator case, this signature plays a key role in altering the resonance point and the oscillation frequency of the system.

Trace of phase-space noncommutativity in the response of a free particle to linearized gravitational waves

Interaction of linearized gravitational waves with a otherwise free particle has been studied quantum mechanically in a noncommutative phase-space to examine whether the particle's response to the gravitational wave gets modified due to spatial and/or momentum noncommutativity. The result shows that momentum noncommutativity introduces a oscillatory noise with a specific frequency determined by the fundamental momentum scale and particle mass. Because of the global nature of the phase-space noncommutativity such noise will have similar characteristics for all detector sites and thus will stand out in a data cross-correlation procedure. If detected, this noise will provide evidence of momentum noncommutativity and also an estimation of the relevant noncommutative parameter.

COW test of the weak equivalence principle: A low-energy window to look into the noncommutative structure of space-time?

We construct the quantum mechanical model of the COW experiment assuming that the underlying space time has a granular structure, described by a canonical noncommutative algebra of coordinates $x^μ$. The time-space sector of the algebra is shown to add a mass-dependent contribution to the gravitational acceleration felt by neutron deBrogli waves measured in a COW experiment. This makes time-space noncommutativity a potential candidate for an apparent violation of WEP even if the ratio of the inertial mass $m_{i}$ and gravitational mass $m_{g}$ is a universal constant. The latest experimental result based on COW principle is shown to place an upper-bound several orders of magnitude stronger than the existing one on the time-space noncommutative parameter. We argue that the evidence of NC structure of space-time may be found if the COW-type experiment can be repeated with several particle species.

On the self-interaction of dark energy in a ghost-condensate model

In a ghost-condensate model of dark energy the combined dynamics of the scalar field and gravitation is shown to impose non-trivial restriction on the self-interaction of the scalar field. Using this restriction we show that the choice of a zero self-interaction leads to a situation too restrictive for the general evolution of the universe. This restriction, obtained in the form of a quadratic equation of the scalar potential, is demonstrated to admit real solutions. Also, in the appropriate limit it reproduces the potential in the phantom cosmology.

Quantum mechanics of a charged particle in a background magnetic field interacting with linearized gravitational waves

We consider the dynamics of a charged particle interacting with background electromagnetic field under the influence of linearized gravitational waves in the long wave-length and low-velocity limit. Following the prescription in \cite{speli}, the system is quantized and the Hamiltonian is then solved by using standard algebraic iterative methods. The solution is in conformity with the classical analysis and shows the possibility of tuning the frequency by changing the magnetic field to set up resonance.

Noncommutative quantum mechanics of a harmonic oscillator under linearized gravitational waves

We consider the quantum dynamics of a harmonic oscillator in noncommutative space under the influence of linearized gravitational waves (GW) in the long wave-length and low-velocity limit. Following the prescription in \cite{ncgw1} we quantize the system. The Hamiltonian of the system is solved by using standard algebraic iterative methods. The solution shows signatures of the coordinate noncommutativity via alterations in the oscillation frequency of the harmonic oscillator system from its commutative counterpart. Moreover, it is found that the response of the harmonic oscillator to periodic GW, when their frequencies match, will oscillate with a time scale imposed by the NC parameter. We expect this noncommutative signature to show up as some noise source in the GW detection experiments since the recent phenomenological upper-bounds set on spatial noncommutative parameter implies a length-scale comparable to the length-variations due to the passage of gravitational waves, detectable in the present day GW detectors.

Galilean symmetry in noncommutative Gravitational Quantum Well

A thorough analysis of Galilean symmetries for the gravitational well problem on a noncommutative plane is presented. A complete closure of the one-parameter centrally extended Galilean algebra is realised for the model. This implies that the field theoretic model constructed to describe noncommutative gravitational quantum well in \cite{ani} is indeed independent of the coordinate choice. Hence the energy spectrum predicted by the model can be associated with the experimental results to establish the upper-bound on time-space noncommutative parameter. Interestingly, noncommutativity is shown to increase the gravitational pull on the neutron trapped in the gravitational well.

Gödel black hole, closed timelike horizon, and the study of particle emissions

We show that a particle, with positive orbital angular momentum, following an outgoing null/timelike geodesic, shall never reach the closed timelike horizon (CTH) present in the $(4+1)$-dimensional rotating Gödel black hole space-time. Therefore a large part of this space-time remains inaccessible to a large class of geodesic observers, depending on the conserved quantities associated with them. We discuss how this fact and the existence of the closed timelike curves present in the asymptotic region make the quantum field theoretic study of the Hawking radiation, where the asymptotic observer states are a pre-requisite, unclear. However, the semiclassical approach provides an alternative to verify the Smarr formula derived recently for the rotating Gödel black hole. We present a systematic analysis of particle emissions, specifically for scalars, charged Dirac spinors and vectors, from this black hole via the semiclassical complex path method.

On the question of regular solitons in a Noncommutative Maxwell--Chern--Simons--Higgs model

The Maxwell--Chern--Simons model with scaler matter in the adjoint representation is analyzed from an alternative approach which is regular in the $θ\to 0$ limit. This method is complementary to the usual operator formalism applied to explore the nonperturbative solutions which gives singular results in the $θ\to 0$ limit. The absence of any regular non-trivial lumpy solutions satisfying B--P--S bound has been conclusively demonstrated.
