Asymptotic stability of steady states for the compressible Navier-Stokes-Riesz system in the presence of vacuum

We consider a one-dimensional physical vacuum free boundary problem on the compressible Navier-Stokes-Riesz system for an attractive Riesz potential $|x|^{2s-1}/(2s-1)$ with $0<s<1/2$. It is proved that for the adiabatic constant $γ$ satisfying $2(1-s)<γ<1+2s/3$ under the additional condition that $3/8<s<1/2$, there exists a unique global-in-time strong solution. Specifically, we establish the Lyapunov-type stability of the compactly supported steady states in the Lagrangian coordinates and we also obtain the time rate of convergence for the strong solution to steady states with the same mass in weighted Sobolev spaces where the weights indicate the behavior of solutions near the vacuum free boundary. The difficulties and challenges in the proof are caused not only by the degeneracy due to the vacuum free boundary but also by the non-local feature of the Riesz potential.

Two-phase compressible/incompressible Navier--Stokes system with inflow-outflow boundary conditions

We prove the existence of a weak solution to the compressible Navier--Stokes system with singular pressure that explodes when density achieves its congestion level. This is a quantity whose initial value evolves according to the transport equation. We then prove that the "stiff pressure" limit gives rise to the two-phase compressible/incompressible system with congestion constraint describing the free interface. We prescribe of the velocity at the boundary and the value of density at the inflow part of the boundary of a general bounded $C^2$ domain. There are no restrictions on the size of the boundary conditions.

A multi-scale problem for viscous heat-conducting fluids in fast rotation

In the present paper, we study the combined incompressible and fast rotation limits for the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with Coriolis, centrifugal and gravitational forces, in the regime of small Mach, Froude and Rossby numbers and for general ill-prepared initial data. We consider both the isotropic scaling (where all the numbers have the same order of magnitude) and the multi-scale case (where some effect is predominant with respect to the others). In the case when the Mach number is of higher order than the Rossby number, we prove that the limit dynamics is described by an incompressible Oberbeck-Boussinesq system, where the velocity field is horizontal (according to the Taylor-Proudman theorem), but vertical effects on the temperature equation are not negligible. Instead, when the Mach and Rossby numbers have the same order of magnitude, and in absence of the centrifugal force, we show convergence to a quasi-geostrophic equation for a stream function of the limit velocity field, coupled with a transport-diffusion equation for a new unknown, which links the target density and temperature profiles. The proof of the convergence is based on a compensated compactness argument. The key point is to identify some compactness properties hidden in the system of acoustic-Poincaré waves. Compared to previous results, our method enables first of all to treat the whole range of parameters in the multi-scale problem, and also to consider a low Froude number regime with the somehow critical choice $Fr=\sqrt{Ma}$, where $Ma$ is the Mach number. This allows us to capture some (low) stratification effects in the limit.

Unsteady flows of heat-conducting non-Newtonian fluids in~Musielak-Orlicz spaces

Our purpose is to show the existence of weak solutions for unsteady flow of non-Newtonian incompressible nonhomogeneous, heat-conducting fluids with generalised form of the stress tensor without any restriction on its upper growth. Motivated by fluids of nonstandard rheology we focus on the general form of growth conditions for the stress tensor which makes anisotropic Musielak-Orlicz spaces a suitable function space for the considered problem. We do not assume any smallness condition on initial data in order to obtain long-time existence. Within the proof we use monotonicity methods, integration by parts adapted to nonreflexive spaces and Young measure techniques
