Parametrization of sunspot groups based on machine learning approach

Sunspot groups observed in white-light appear as complex structures. Analysis of these structures is usually based on simple morphological descriptors which capture only generic properties and miss information about fine details. We present a machine learning approach to introduce a complete yet compact description of sunspot groups. The idea is to map sunspot group images into an appropriate lower-dimensional (latent) space. We apply a combination of Variational Autoencoder and Principal Component Analysis to obtain a set of 285 latent descriptors. We demonstrate that the standard descriptors are embedded into the latent ones. Thus, latent features can be considered as an extended description of sunspot groups and, in our opinion, can expand the possibilities for the research on sunspot groups. In particular, we demonstrate an application for estimation of the sunspot group complexity. The proposed parametrization model is generic and can be applied to investigation of other traces of solar activity observed in various spectrum lines. Key components of this work, which are the parametrization model, dataset of sunspot groups and latent vectors, are available in the public GitHub repository github.com/observethesun/sunspot_groups and can be used to reproduce the results and for further research.

The shape of sunspots and solar activity cycles

The paper presents the results of the analysis of the geometric characteristics of sunspots for the period of 19-24 cycles of activity. The shape of sunspots was studied on the basis of the method of normalization of images of sunspots to study the average profile of the spot. The deviation of the shape of sunspots from the axisymmetric configuration is investigated. It was found that the spots, as a rule, have an ellipsoid shape, and the major axis of the ellipse has a predominant inclination to the equator, opposite in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The angle of inclination of the sunspot axis corresponds to the angle of inclination of the bipoles in the activity cycles. The relationship between the shape of sunspots in the current cycle and the amplitude of the next cycle of activity is found. The greater the elongation along the longitude of the current cycle of spots, the higher the next cycle of activity will be.

Correlation Between Sunspot Number and ca II K Emission Index

Long-term synoptic observations in the resonance line of Ca II K constitute a fundamental database for a variety of retrospective analyses of the state of the solar magnetism. Synoptic Ca II K observations began in late 1904 at the Kodaikanal Observatory, in India. In early 1970s, the National Solar Observatory (NSO) at Sacramento Peak (USA) started a new program of daily Sun-as-a-star observations in the Ca II K line. Today the NSO is continuing these observations through its Synoptic Optical Long-term Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS) facility. These different data sets can be combined into a single disk-integrated Ca II K index time series that describes the average properties of the chromospheric emission over several solar cycles. We present such a Ca II K composite and discuss its correlation with the new entirely revised sunspot number data series. For this preliminary investigation, the scaling factor between pairs of time series was determined assuming a simple linear model for the relationship between the monthly mean values during the duration of overlapping observations.

Robotic optical telescopes global network MASTER II. Equipment, structure, algorithms

Presented paper describes the basic principles and features of the implementation of a robotic network of optical telescopes MASTER, designed to study the prompt (simultaneous with gamma radiation) optical emission of gamma-ray bursts and to perform the sky survey to detect unknown objects and transient phenomena. With joint efforts of Sternberg astronomical institute, High altitude astronomical station of the Pulkovo observatory, Ural state university, Irkutsk state university, Blagoveshchensk pedagogical university, the robotic telescopes MASTER II near Kislovodsk, Yekaterinburg, Irkutsk and Blagoveshchensk were installed and tested. The network spread over the longitudes is greater than 6 hours. A further expansion of the network is considered.

MASTER prompt and follow-up GRB observations

There are the results of gamma-ray bursts observations obtained using the MASTER robotic telescope in 2007 - 2009. We observed 20 error-boxes of gamma-ray bursts this period. The limits on their optical brightnesses have been derived. There are 5 prompt observations among them, obtained at our very wide field cameras. Also we present the results of the earliest observations of the optical emission of the gamma-ray bursts GRB 050824 and GRB 060926.

Master Robotic Net

The main goal of the MASTER-Net project is to produce a unique fast sky survey with all sky observed over a single night down to a limiting magnitude of 19 - 20mag. Such a survey will make it possible to address a number of fundamental problems: search for dark energy via the discovery and photometry of supernovas (including SNIa), search for exoplanets, microlensing effects, discovery of minor bodies in the Solar System and space-junk monitoring. All MASTER telescopes can be guided by alerts, and we plan to observe prompt optical emission from gamma-ray bursts synchronously in several filters and in several polarization planes.

Transient detections and other real-time data processing from wide-field chambers MASTER-VWF

At present time Robotic observatory making is of current importance. Having a large field of view and being able to point at anywhere, Robotic astronomical systems are indispensable when they looking for transients like grb, supernovae explosions, novae etc, as it's impossible in these cases to foresee what you should point you telescope at and when. In work are described prompt GRB observations received on wide-field chambers MASTER-VWF, and also methods of the images analysis and transients classifications applied in real-time data processing in this experiment. For 7 months of operation 6 synchronous observations of gamma-ray burst had been made by MASTER VWF in Kislovodsk and Irkutsk. In all cases a high upper limits have been received (see tabl \ref {tab_grbwf} and fig. \ref {allgrb}).
