Black hole induced false vacuum decay: The role of greybody factors

We study false vacuum decay catalyzed by black holes. We consider a toy two-dimensional model of a scalar field with an unstable potential in the background of a dilaton black hole. A realistic black hole in four dimensions possesses the potential barrier for linear field perturbations. We model this barrier -- the greybody factor -- for spherically-symmetric perturbations in the toy model by adding a coupling between the scalar field and dilaton. We compute analytically the decay rate for the black hole in thermal equilibrium (Hartle-Hawking state) and for the radiating black hole in empty space (Unruh state). Our results show that, contrary to the Hartle-Hawking vacuum, the decay probability of the Unruh vacuum remains exponentially suppressed at all black hole temperatures. We argue that this result holds also in four dimensions.

Gravitational Portals with Non-Minimal Couplings

We consider the effects of non-minimal couplings to curvature of the form $ξ_S S^2 R$, for three types of scalars: the Higgs boson, the inflaton, and a scalar dark matter candidate. We compute the abundance of dark matter produced by these non-minimal couplings to gravity and compare to similar results with minimal couplings. We also compute the contribution to the radiation bath during reheating. The main effect is a potential augmentation of the maximum temperature during reheating. A model independent limit of $\mathcal{O}(10^{12})$ GeV is obtained. For couplings $ξ_S \gtrsim \mathcal{O}(1)$, these dominate over minimal gravitational interactions.

Quantum Effects in Palatini Higgs Inflation

We study quantum effects in Higgs inflation in the Palatini formulation of gravity, in which the metric and connection are treated as independent variables. We exploit the fact that the cutoff, above which perturbation theory breaks down, is higher than the scale of inflation. Unless new physics above the cutoff leads to unnaturally large corrections, we can directly connect low-energy physics and inflation. On the one hand, the lower bound on the top Yukawa coupling due to collider experiments leads to an upper bound on the non-minimal coupling of the Higgs field to gravity: $ξ\lesssim 10^8$. On the other hand, the Higgs potential can only support successful inflation if $ξ\gtrsim 10^6$. This leads to a fairly strict upper bound on the top Yukawa coupling of $0.925$ (defined in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$-scheme at the energy scale $173.2\,\text{GeV}$) and constrains the inflationary prediction for the tensor-to-scalar ratio. Additionally, we compare our findings to metric Higgs inflation.

Unveiling complex vector dark matter by magnetic field

We discuss the possibility that dark matter is made of a new complex massive vector field with a global $U(1)$-symmetry. The field interacts with the Standard Model via coupling to the gauge field of the hypercharge group. We study classical homogeneous configurations arising in the theory. Some of these configurations include magnetic components of the Standard Model electromagnetic field tensor. This opens a possibility to relate the origin of possible primordial magnetic fields to the cosmological evolution of vector dark matter condensates composed of magnetic bosons.

Review of non-topological solitons in theories with $U(1)$-symmetry

We provide a review of non-topological solitonic solutions arising in theories with a complex scalar field and global or gauge $U(1)$-symmetry. It covers Q-balls, homogeneous charged scalar condensates, and nonlinear localized holes and bulges in a classically stable condensate. A historical overview is followed by the discussion of properties of solutions, including their stability, from different perspectives. Solitons in models with additional massive degrees of freedom are also revisited, and their relation to one-field Q-balls is showed. We also discuss theories with a gauge field giving rise to gauged Q-balls and theories with dynamical gravity giving rise to boson stars.

On stability of electroweak vacuum during inflation

We study Coleman-De Luccia tunneling of the Standard Model Higgs field during inflation in the case when the electroweak vacuum is metastable. We verify that the tunneling rate is exponentially suppressed. The main contribution to the suppression is the same as in flat space-time. We analytically estimate the corrections due to the expansion of the universe and an effective mass term in the Higgs potential that can be present at inflation.

Towards the correspondence between Q-clouds and sphalerons

Non-linear classical equations of motion may admit degenerate solutions at fixed charges. While the solutions with lower energies are classically stable, the ones with larger energies are unstable and refereed as Q-clouds. We consider a theory in which the homogeneous charged condensate is classically stable and argue that Q-clouds correspond to sphalerons between the stable Q-balls and the condensate. For the model with analytic solution, we present Arrhenius formula for the quantum production of Q-balls from the condensate at large temperatures.
