Atom-Mechanical Hong-Ou-Mandel Interference

Quantum coupling between mechanical oscillators and atomic gases generating entanglement has been recently experimentally demonstrated using their subsequent interaction with light. The next step is to build a hybrid atom-mechanical quantum gate showing bosonic interference effects of single quanta in the atoms and oscillators. We propose an experimental test of Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between single phononic excitation and single collective excitation of atoms using the optical connection between them. A single optical pulse is sufficient to build a hybrid quantum-nondemolition gate to observe the bunching of such different quanta. The output atomic-mechanical state exhibits a probability of a hybrid bunching effect that proves its nonclassical aspects. This proposal opens a feasible road to broadly test such advanced quantum bunching phenomena in a hybrid system with different specific couplings.

Thermally-induced qubit coherence in quantum electromechanics

Quantum coherence, the ability of a quantum system to be in a superposition of orthogonal quantum states, is a distinct feature of the quantum mechanics, thus marking a deviation from classical physics. Coherence finds its applications in quantum sensing and metrology, quantum thermodynamics and computation. A particularly interesting is the possibility to observe coherence arising in counter-intuitive way from thermal energy that is without implementation of intricate protocols involving coherent driving sequences. In this manuscript, we investigate quantum coherence emerging in a hybrid system composed of a two-level system (qubit) and a thermal quantum harmonic oscillator (a material mechanical oscillator), inspired by recent experimental progress in fabrication of such systems. We show that quantum coherence is created in such a composite system solely from the interaction of the parts and persists under relevant damping. Implementation of such scheme will demonstrate previously unobserved mechanisms of coherence generation and can be beneficial for hybrid quantum technologies with mechanical oscillators and qubits.

Stable double-resonance optical spring in laser gravitational-wave detectors

We analyze the optical spring characteristics of a double pumped Fabry-Perot cavity. A double-resonance optical spring occurs when the optical spring frequency and the detuning frequency of the cavity coincide. We formulate a simple criterion for the stability of an optical spring and apply it to the double resonance regime. Double resonance configurations are very promising for future gravitational wave detectors as they allow us to surpass the Standard Quantum Limit. We show that stable double resonance can be demonstrated in middle scale prototype interferometers such as the Glasgow 10m-Prototype, Gingin High Optical Power Test Facility or the AEI 10m Prototype Interferometer before being implemented in future gravitational wave detectors.
