Inelastic processes in strontium-hydrogen collisions and their impact on non-LTE calculations

Inelastic processes rate coefficients for low-energy Sr + H, Sr$^+$ + H$^-$, Sr$^+$ + H and Sr$^{2+}$ + H$^-$ collisions are calculated using multichannel quantum model approach. 31 scattering channels of SrH$^+$ and 17 scattering channels of SrH are considered. The partial cross sections and the partial rate coefficients are hence calculated for 1202 partial processes in total. Using new quantum data for Sr II + H I collisions, we updated model atom of Sr II and performed the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) calculations. We provide the non-LTE abundance corrections for the Sr II resonance lines in two grids of model atmospheres, which are applicable to very metal-poor ([Fe/H] $\le -2$) dwarfs and giants.

Influence of Inelastic Collisions with Hydrogen Atoms on the Formation of Al I and Si I Lines in Stellar Spectra

The non-LTE line formation for Al I and Si I was calculated with model atmospheres corresponding to F-G-K type stars of different metallicity. To account for inelastic collisions with H I, for the first time we applied the cross sections calculated by Belyaev et al. using model approaches within the formalism of the Born-Oppenheimer quantum theory. For Al I non-LTE leads to overionization in the line formation layers and to weakened spectral lines, in line with earlier non-LTE studies. However, in contrast to the previuos studies, our results predict smaller magnitude of the non-LTE effects for the subordinate lines. Owing to large cross sections, the ion-pair production and mutual neutralization processes Al I(nl) + H I(1s) $\leftrightarrow$ Al~II(3s^2) + H^- provide a close coupling of high-excitation Al I levels to the Al II ground state, which causes smaller deviations from the TE populations compared to the case of pure electron collisions. For three metal-poor stars, the Al abundance was determined from seven lines in different models of their formation. In LTE and in non-LTE calculations with pure electron collisions, the Al I 3961 A resonance line gives a 0.25-0.45 dex lower abundance than the mean from the subordinate lines. The difference is removed by accounting for the collisions with H I, and the rms error of the abundance from all seven lines decreases by a factor of 1.5-3 compared to LTE. We calculated the non-LTE abundance corrections for six Al I lines depending on Teff (4500-6500 K), log g (3.0-4.5), and [Fe/H] (0, -1, -2, -3). For Si I including the collisions with H I leads to TE populations in the line formation layers and to minor departures from LTE in spectral lines.

Landau-Zener type surface hopping algorithms

A class of surface hopping algorithms is studied comparing two recent Landau-Zener (LZ) formulas for the probability of nonadiabatic transitions. One of the formulas requires a diabatic representation of the potential matrix while the other one depends only on the adiabatic potential energy surfaces. For each classical trajectory, the nonadiabatic transitions take place only when the surface gap attains a local minimum. Numerical experiments are performed with deterministically branching trajectories and with probabilistic surface hopping. The deterministic and the probabilistic approach confirm the good agreement of both the LZ probabilities as well the good approximation of the reference solution computed solving the Schroedinger equation via a grid based pseudo-spectral method. Visualizations of position expectations and superimposed surface hopping trajectories with reference position densities illustrate the effective dynamics of the investigated algorithms.

Nonadiabatic nuclear dynamics of the ammonia cation studied by surface hopping classical trajectory calculations

The Landau--Zener (LZ) type classical-trajectory surface-hopping algorithm is applied to the nonadiabatic nuclear dynamics of the ammonia cation after photoionization of the ground-state neutral molecule to the excited states of the cation. The algorithm employs the recently proposed formula for nonadiabatic LZ transition probabilities derived from the adiabatic potential energy surfaces. The evolution of the populations of the ground state and the two lowest excited adiabatic states is calculated up to 200 fs. The results agree well with quantum simulations available for the first 100 fs based on the same potential energy surfaces. Four different time scales are detected for the nuclear dynamics: Ultrafast Jahn--Teller dynamics between the excited states on a 5 fs time scale; fast transitions between the excited state and the ground state within a time scale of 20 fs; relatively slow partial conversion of a first-excited-state population to the ground state within a time scale of 100 fs; and nearly constant populations after roughly 120 fs due to a dynamical equilibrium between all three states. The latter provides a possible explanation of the experimental evidence that ammonia cation is nonfluorescent.

Charge transfer in the cold Yb$^+$ + Rb collisions

Charge-transfer cold Yb$^+$ + Rb collision dynamics is investigated theoretically using high-level {\it ab initio} potential energy curves, dipole moment functions and nonadiabatic coupling matrix elements. Within the scalar-relativistic approximation, the radiative transitions from the entrance $A^1Σ^+$ to the ground $X^1Σ^+$ state are found to be the only efficient charge-transfer pathway. The spin-orbit coupling does not open other efficient pathways, but alters the potential energy curves and the transition dipole moment for the $A-X$ pair of states. The radiative, as well as the nonradiative, charge-transfer cross sections calculated within the $10^{-3}-10$ cm$^{-1}$ collision energy range exhibit all features of the Langevin ion-atom collision regime, including a rich structure associated with centrifugal barrier tunneling (orbiting) resonances. Theoretical rate coefficients for two Yb isotopes agree well with those measured by immersing Yb$^+$ ion in an ultracold Rb ensemble in a hybrid trap. Possible origins of discrepancy in the product distributions and relations to previously studied similar processes are discussed.

Revised Born-Oppenheimer approach and a multielectron reprojection method for inelastic collisions

The quantum reprojection method within the standard adiabatic Born-Oppenheimer approach is derived for multielectron collision systems. The method takes nonvanishing asymptotic nonadiabatic couplings into account and distinguishes asymptotic currents in molecular state and in atomic state channels, leading to physically consistent and reliable results. The method is demonstrated for the example of low-energy inelastic Li+Na collisions, for which the conventional application of the standard adiabatic Born-Oppenheimer approach fails and leads to paradoxes such as infinite inelastic cross sections.
