Investigations of Higher Order Links

The following is an amalgamation of four preprints and some computer programs which together represent the current state of our investigations of higher order links. This investigation was motivated by questions discussed and raised in the first author's paper "New States of Matter Suggested by New Topological Structures". An important motivation has been to suggest the synthesis of new types of molecules (see the relevant articles listed in the bibliography). This discussion is not final, but we think that the results and methods are worth making public and would be useful for other investigators.

Yet More Smooth Mapping Spaces and Their Smoothly Local Properties

Motivated by the definition of the smooth manifold structure on a suitable mapping space, we consider the general problem of how to transfer local properties from a smooth space to an associated mapping space. This leads to the notion of smoothly local properties. In realising the definition of a local property at a particular point it may be that there are choices that need to be made. To say that the local property is smoothly local is to say that those choices can be made smoothly dependent on the point. In particular, that a manifold has charts is a local property. A local addition is the structure needed to say that there is a way to choose a chart about each point so that it varies smoothly with that point. To be able to extend these ideas beyond that of the local additivity of manifolds we work in a category of generalised smooth spaces. We are thus are able to consider more general mapping spaces than just those arising from the maps from one smooth manifold to another and thus able to generalise the standard result on when this space of maps is again a smooth manifold. As applications of this generalisation we show that the mapping spaces involving the various figure 8s from String Topology are manifolds, and that they embed as submanifolds with tubular neighbourhoods in the corresponding loop spaces. We also show that applying the mapping space functor to a regular map of manifolds produces a regular map on the mapping spaces.

Tall-Wraith Monoids

Tall-Wraith monoids were introduced in MR2559638 ("The hunting of the Hopf ring") to describe the algebraic structure on the set of unstable operations of a suitable generalised cohomology theory. In this paper we begin the study of Tall-Wraith monoids in an algebraic and categorical setting. We show that for V a variety of algebras, applying the free V-algebra functor to a monoid in Set produces a Tall-Wraith monoid. We also study the example of the Tall-Wraith monoid defined by the self set-maps of a finite ring, an example closely related to the original motivation for Tall-Wraith monoids.

Comparative Smootheology

We compare various different definitions of "the category of smooth objects". The definitions compared are due to Chen, Frölicher, Sikorski, Smith, and Souriau. The method of comparison is to construct functors between the categories that enable us to see how the categories relate to each other. This produces a diagram of categories with the category of Frölicher spaces sitting at its centre. Our method of study involves finding a general context into which these categories can be placed. This involves considering categories wherein objects are considered in relation to a certain collection of standard test objects. This therefore applies beyond the question of categories of smooth spaces.

Stable and Unstable Operations in mod p Cohomology Theories

We consider operations between two multiplicative, complex orientable cohomology theories. Under suitable hypotheses, we construct a map from unstable to stable operations, left-inverse to the usual map from stable to unstable operations. In the main example, where the target theory is one of the Morava K-theories, this provides a simple and explicit description of a splitting arising from the Bousfield-Kuhn functor
