Non-Noetherianity of Denjoy-Carleman rings of germs

It is shown that Denjoy-Carleman quasi analytic rings of germs of functions in two or more variables either complex or real valued that are stable under derivation and strictly larger than the ring of real-analytic germs are not Noetherian rings. The failure of Weierstrass division on these Denjoy-Carleman classes yields a contradiction to Noetherianity via a stronger version of Artin Approximation due to Popescu as well as results on projective modules. This settles a 35-year old open problem in real algebraic geometry.

Coherence and Other Properties of Sheaves in the Kohn Algorithm

In the smooth case, we prove quasi-flasqueness for the sheaves of all subelliptic multipliers as well as at each of the steps of the Kohn algorithm on a pseudoconvex domain in $\C^n.$ We use techniques by Jean-Claude Tougeron to show that if the domain has a real-analytic defining function, the modified Kohn algorithm involving generating ideals and taking real radicals only in the ring of real-analytic germs yields quasi-coherent sheaves. This sharpens a result obtained by J. J. Kohn in 1979.

Equivalence of types and Catlin boundary systems

The D'Angelo finite type is shown to be equivalent to the Kohn finite ideal type on smooth, pseudoconvex domains in complex n space. This is known as the Kohn Conjecture. The argument uses Catlin's notion of a boundary system as well as methods from subanalytic and semialgebraic geometry. When a subset of the boundary contains only two level sets of the Catlin multitype, a lower bound for the subelliptic gain in the \bar\partial-Neumann problem is obtained in terms of the D'Angelo type, the dimension of the ambient space, and the level of forms.

Effective vanishing order of the Levi determinant

On a smooth domain in complex n space of finite D'Angelo q-type at a point, an effective upper bound for the vanishing order of the Levi determinant $\text{coeff}\{\partial r \wedge \dbar r \wedge (\partial \dbar r)^{n-q}\}$ at that point is given in terms of the D'Angelo q-type, the dimension of the space n, and q itself. The argument uses Catlin's notion of a boundary system as well as techniques pioneered by John D'Angelo.
