Hyperbolic evolution equations, Lorentzian holonomy, and Riemannian generalised Killing spinors

We prove that the Cauchy problem for parallel null vector fields on smooth Lorentzian manifolds is well posed. The proof is based on the derivation and analysis of suitable hyperbolic evolution equations given in terms of the Ricci tensor and other geometric objects. Moreover, we classify Riemannian manifolds satisfying the constraint conditions for this Cauchy problem. It is then possible to characterise certain holonomy reductions of globally hyperbolic manifolds with parallel null vector in terms of flow equations for Riemannian special holonomy metrics. For exceptional holonomy groups these flow equations have been investigated in the literature before in other contexts. As an application, the results provide a classification of Riemannian manifolds admitting imaginary generalised Killing spinors. We will also give new local normal forms for Lorentzian metrics with parallel null spinor in any dimension.

(M-theory-)Killing spinors on symmetric spaces

We show how the theory of invariant principal bundle connections for reductive homogeneous spaces can be applied to determine the holonomy of generalised Killing spinor covariant derivatives of the form $D= \nabla + Ω$ in a purely algebraic and algorithmic way, where $Ω: TM \rightarrow Λ^*(TM)$ is a left-invariant homomorphism. Specialising this to the case of symmetric M-theory backgrounds (i.e. $(M,g,F)$ with $(M,g)$ a symmetric space and $F$ an invariant closed 4-form), we derive several criteria for such a background to preserve some supersymmetry and consequently find all supersymmetric symmetric M-theory backgrounds.

The Cauchy problem for parallel spinors as first-order symmetric hyperbolic system

We prove that a smooth Riemannian manifold admitting an imaginary generalized Killing spinor whose Dirac current satisfies an additional algebraic constraint condition can be embedded as spacelike Cauchy hypersurface in a smooth Lorentzian manifold on which the given spinor extends to a null parallel spinor. This is in contrast to a corresponding Cauchy problem for real generalized Killing spinors into Riemannian manifolds. The construction is based on first order symmetric hyperbolic PDE-methods. In fact, the coupled evolution equations for metric and spinor as considered here extend and generalize the well known PDE-system appearing in the Cauchy problem for the vacuum Einstein equations. Special cases are discussed and the statement is compared with a similar result obtained recently for the analytic category.

Cauchy problems for Lorentzian manifolds with special holonomy

On a Lorentzian manifold the existence of a parallel null vector field implies certain constraint conditions on the induced Riemannian geometry of a space-like hypersurface. We will derive these constraint conditions and, conversely, show that every real analytic Riemannian manifold satisfying the constraint conditions can be extended to a Lorentzian manifold with a parallel null vector field. Similarly, every parallel null spinor on a Lorentzian manifold induces an imaginary generalised Killing spinor on a space-like hypersurface. Then, based on the fact that a parallel spinor field induces a parallel vector field, we can apply the first result to prove: every real analytic Riemannian manifold carrying a real analytic, imaginary generalised Killing spinor can be extended to a Lorentzian manifold with a parallel null spinor. Finally, we give examples of geodesically complete Riemannian manifolds satisfying the constraint conditions.

Charged Conformal Killing Spinors

We study the twistor equation on pseudo-Riemannian $Spin^c-$manifolds whose solutions we call charged conformal Killing spinors (CCKS). We derive several integrability conditions for the existence of CCKS and study their relations to spinor bilinears. A construction principle for Lorentzian manifolds admitting CCKS with nontrivial charge starting from CR-geometry is presented. We obtain a partial classification result in the Lorentzian case under the additional assumption that the associated Dirac current is normal conformal and complete the Classification of manifolds admitting CCKS in all dimensions and signatures $\leq 5$ which has recently been initiated in the study of supersymmetric field theories on curved space.

Computation of generalized Killing spinors on reductive homogeneous spaces

We determine the holonomy of generalized Killing spinor covariant derivatives of the form $D= \nabla + Ω$ on pseudo-Riemannian reductive homogeneous spaces in a purely algebraic and algorithmic way, where $Ω: TM \rightarrow Λ^*(TM)$ is a left-invariant homomorphism. This is essentially an application of the theory of invariant principal bundle connections defined over homogeneous principal bundles. Moreover, the algorithm allows a computation of the associated Killing superalgebra in certain cases. The procedure is demonstrated by determining the supersymmetries of certain homogeneous M2 duals, which arise in M-theory.

Conformal superalgebras via tractor calculus

We use the manifestly conformally invariant description of a Lorentzian conformal structure in terms of a parabolic Cartan geometry in order to introduce a superalgebra structure on the space of twistor spinors and normal conformal vector fields formulated in purely algebraic terms on parallel sections in tractor bundles. Via a fixed metric in the conformal class, one reproduces a conformal superalgebra structure which has been considered in the literature before. The tractor approach, however, makes clear that the failure of this object to be a Lie superalgebra in certain cases is due to purely algebraic identities on the spinor module and to special properties of the conformal holonomy representation. Moreover, it naturally generalizes to higher signatures. This yields new formulas for constructing new twistor spinors and higher order normal conformal Killing forms out of existing ones, generalizing the well-known spinorial Lie derivative. Moreover, we derive restrictions on the possible dimension of the space of twistor spinors in any metric signature.

Reducible conformal holonomy in any metric signature and application to twistor spinors in low dimension

We prove that given a pseudo-Riemannian conformal structure whose conformal holonomy representation fixes a totally lightlike subspace of arbitrary dimension, there is, wrt. a local metric in the conformal class defined off a singular set, a parallel, totally lightlike distribution on the tangent bundle which contains the image of the Ricci-tensor. This generalizes results obtained for invariant lightlike lines and planes and closes a gap in the understanding of the geometric meaning of reducibly acting conformal holonomy groups. We show how this result naturally applies to the classification of geometries admitting twistor spinors in some low-dimensional split signatures when they are described using conformal spin tractor calculus. Together with already known results about generic distributions in dimensions 5 and 6 we obtain a complete geometric description of local geometries admitting real twistor spinors in signatures (3,2) and (3,3). In contrast to the generic case where generic geometric distributions play an important role, the underlying geometries in the non-generic case without zeroes turn out to admit integrable distributions.

Towards a Classification of pseudo-Riemannian Geometries Admitting Twistor Spinors

We show that given a conformal structure whose holonomy representation fixes a totally lightlike subspace of arbitrary dimension, there is always a local metric in the conformal class off a singular set which is Ricci-isotropic and gives rise to a parallel, totally lightlike distribution on the tangent bundle. This naturally applies to parallel spin tractors resp. twistor spinors on conformal spin manifolds and clarifies which twistor spinors are locally equivalent to parallel spinors. Moreover, we study the zero set of a twistor spinor using the curved orbit decomposition for parabolic geometries. We can completely describe its local structure, construct a natural projective structure on it, and show that locally every twistor spinor with zero is equivalent to a parallel spinor off the zero set. An application of these results in low-dimensional split-signatures leads to a complete geometric description of local geometries admitting non-generic twistor spinors in signatures (3,2) and (3,3) which complements the well-known description of the generic case.
