Computational challenges for multi-loop collider phenomenology

Precision measurements at the LHC and future colliders require theory predictions with uncertainties at the percent level for many observables. Theory uncertainties due to the perturbative truncation are particularly relevant and must be reduced to fully exploit the physics potential of collider experiments. In recent years the theoretical high energy physics community has made tremendous analytical and numerical advances to address this challenge. In this white paper, we survey state-of-the-art calculations in perturbative quantum field theory for collider phenomenology with a particular focus on the computational requirements at high perturbative orders. We show that these calculations can have specific high-performance-computing (HPC) profiles that should to be taken into account in future HPC resource planning.

Mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to dilepton production at the LHC in the high invariant mass region

We compute mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to the neutral-current Drell-Yan production of a pair of massless leptons in the high invariant mass region. Our computation is fully differential with respect to the final state particles. At relatively low values of the dilepton invariant mass, $m_{\ell \ell} \sim 200$ GeV, we find unexpectedly large mixed QCD-electroweak corrections at the level of -1%. At higher invariant masses, $m_{\ell \ell} \sim 1$ TeV, we observe that these corrections can be well approximated by the product of QCD and electroweak corrections. Hence, thanks to the well-known Sudakov enhancement of the latter, they increase at large invariant mass and reach e.g. -3% at $m_{\ell \ell} = 3$ TeV. Finally, we note that the inclusion of mixed corrections reduces the theoretical uncertainty related to the choice of electroweak input parameters to below the percent level.

Quark and gluon form factors in four-loop QCD

We compute the photon-quark and Higgs-gluon form factors to four-loop order within massless perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. Our results constitute ready-to-use building blocks for N${}^4$LO cross sections for Drell-Yan processes and gluon-fusion Higgs boson production at the LHC. We present complete analytic expressions for both form factors and show several of the most complicated master integrals.

Renormalization of twist-two operators in QCD and its application to singlet splitting functions

Splitting functions govern the scale evolution of parton distribution functions. Through a Mellin transformation, they are related to anomalous dimensions of twist-two operators in the operator product expansion. We study off-shell operator matrix element, where the physical operators mix under renormalization with other gauge-variant operators of the same quantum numbers. We devise a new method to systematically extract the Feynman rules resulting from those operators without knowing the operators themselves. As a first application of the new approach, we independently reproduce the well-known three-loop singlet splitting functions obtained from computations of on-shell quantities.

The $Hb\bar{b}$ vertex at four loops and hard matching coefficients in SCET for various currents

We compute the four-loop corrections to the Higgs-bottom vertex within massless QCD and present analytic results for all color structures. The infrared poles of the renormalized form factor agree with the predicted four-loop pattern. Furthermore, we use the results for the Higgs-bottom, photon-quark, and Higgs-gluon form factors to provide hard matching coefficients in soft-collinear effective theory up to four-loop accuracy.

Three-loop helicity amplitudes for diphoton production in gluon fusion

We present a calculation of the helicity amplitudes for the process $gg\toγγ$ in three-loop massless QCD. We employ a recently proposed method to calculate scattering amplitudes in the 't Hooft-Veltman scheme that reduces the amount of spurious non-physical information needed at intermediate stages of the computation. Our analytic results for the three-loop helicity amplitudes are remarkably compact, and can be efficiently evaluated numerically. This calculation provides the last missing building block for the computation of NNLO QCD corrections to diphoton production in gluon fusion.

Three-loop helicity amplitudes for quark-gluon scattering in QCD

We compute the three-loop helicity amplitudes for $q\bar{q} \to gg$ and its crossed partonic channels, in massless QCD. Our analytical results provide a non-trivial check of the color quadrupole contribution to the infrared poles for external states in different color representations. At high energies, the $qg \to qg$ amplitude shows the predicted factorized form from Regge theory and confirms previous results for the gluon Regge trajectory extracted from $qq' \to qq'$ and $gg \to gg$ scattering.

MultivariateApart: Generalized Partial Fractions

We present a package to perform partial fraction decompositions of multivariate rational functions. The algorithm allows to systematically avoid spurious denominator factors and is capable of producing unique results also when being applied to terms of a sum separately. The package is designed to work in Mathematica, but also provides interfaces to the Form and Singular computer algebra systems.

Two-loop helicity amplitudes for diphoton plus jet production in full color

We present the complete two-loop corrections in massless QCD for the production of two photons and a jet, taking into account all color structures. In particular, we analytically compute all two-loop helicity amplitudes for the quark-antiquark, quark-gluon, and antiquark-gluon channel, and check them with an independent calculation of the polarization-summed interference with the tree amplitude. This is the first time that two-loop QCD corrections to a five-point scattering process have been computed beyond the leading-color approximation for all helicity configurations.

Cusp and collinear anomalous dimensions in four-loop QCD from form factors

We calculate the complete quark and gluon cusp anomalous dimensions in four-loop massless QCD analytically from first principles. In addition, we determine the complete matter dependence of the quark and gluon collinear anomalous dimensions. Our approach is to Laurent expand four-loop quark and gluon form factors in the parameter of dimensional regularization. We employ finite field and syzygy techniques to reduce the relevant Feynman integrals to a basis of finite integrals, and subsequently evaluate the basis integrals directly from their standard parametric representations.

Mixed EW-QCD two-loop amplitudes for $q\bar{q} \to \ell^+\ell^-$ and $γ_5$ scheme independence of multi-loop corrections

We perform a dedicated study of the $q \bar{q}$-initiated two-loop electroweak-QCD Drell-Yan scattering amplitude in dimensional regularization schemes for vanishing light quark and lepton masses. For the relative order $α$ and $α_s$ one-loop Standard Model corrections, details of our comparison to the original literature are given. The infrared pole terms of the mixed two-loop amplitude are governed by a known generalization of the dipole formula and we show explicitly that exactly the same two-loop polarized hard scattering functions are obtained in both the standard 't Hooft-Veltman-Breitenlohner-Maison $γ_5$ scheme and Kreimer's anticommuting $γ_5$ scheme.

Multiple polylogarithms with algebraic arguments and the two-loop EW-QCD Drell-Yan master integrals

We consider Feynman integrals with algebraic leading singularities and total differentials in $ε\,\mathrm{d}\ln$ form. We show for the first time that it is possible to evaluate integrals with singularities involving unrationalizable roots in terms of conventional multiple polylogarithms, by either parametric integration or matching the symbol. As our main application, we evaluate the two-loop master integrals relevant to the $αα_s$ corrections to Drell-Yan lepton pair production at hadron colliders. We optimize our functional basis to allow for fast and stable numerical evaluations in the physical region of phase space.

The Four-Loop Cusp Anomalous Dimension from the $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Sudakov Form Factor

We present an analytic derivation of the full four-loop cusp anomalous dimension of $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory from the Sudakov form factor. To extract the cusp anomalous dimension, we calculate the $ε^{-2}$ pole of the form factor using parametric integrations of finite integrals. We provide uniformly transcendental results for the master integrals through to weight six and confirm a very recent independent analytic result for the full four-loop cusp anomalous dimension of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ model.

On the Computation of Form Factors in Massless QCD with Finite Master Integrals

We present the bare one-, two-, and three-loop form factors in massless Quantum Chromodynamics as linear combinations of finite master integrals. Using symbolic integration, we compute their $ε$ expansions and thereby reproduce all known results with an independent method. Remarkably, in our finite basis, only integrals with a less-than-maximal number of propagators contribute to the cusp anomalous dimensions. We report on indications of this phenomenon at four loops, including the result for a finite, irreducible, twelve-propagator form factor integral. Together with this article, we provide our automated software setup for the computation of finite master integrals.

A novel approach to integration by parts reduction

Integration by parts reduction is a standard component of most modern multi-loop calculations in quantum field theory. We present a novel strategy constructed to overcome the limitations of currently available reduction programs based on Laporta's algorithm. The key idea is to construct algebraic identities from numerical samples obtained from reductions over finite fields. We expect the method to be highly amenable to parallelization, show a low memory footprint during the reduction step, and allow for significantly better run-times.

Soft-virtual corrections to Higgs production at N$^3$LO

In this paper, we compute the soft-virtual corrections to Higgs boson production in gluon fusion for infinite top quark mass at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD. In addition, we present analogous soft-virtual terms for both Drell-Yan lepton production in QCD and scalar pair production in N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory. The result for Drell-Yan lepton production is derived from the result for Higgs boson production using Casimir scaling arguments together with well-known results available in the literature. For scalar pair production in the N = 4 model, we show by explicit calculation that the result is equal to the part of the Higgs boson soft-virtual term which is of maximal transcendentality weight.

The Complete Two-Loop Integrated Jet Thrust Distribution In Soft-Collinear Effective Theory

In this work, we complete the calculation of the soft part of the two-loop integrated jet thrust distribution in e+e- annihilation. This jet mass observable is based on the thrust cone jet algorithm, which involves a veto scale for out-of-jet radiation. The previously uncomputed part of our result depends in a complicated way on the jet cone size, r, and at intermediate stages of the calculation we actually encounter a new class of multiple polylogarithms. We employ an extension of the coproduct calculus to systematically exploit functional relations and represent our results concisely. In contrast to the individual contributions, the sum of all global terms can be expressed in terms of classical polylogarithms. Our explicit two-loop calculation enables us to clarify the small r picture discussed in earlier work. In particular, we show that the resummation of the logarithms of r that appear in the previously uncomputed part of the two-loop integrated jet thrust distribution is inextricably linked to the resummation of the non-global logarithms. Furthermore, we find that the logarithms of r which cannot be absorbed into the non-global logarithms in the way advocated in earlier work have coefficients fixed by the two-loop cusp anomalous dimension. We also show that, given appropriate L-loop contributions to the integrated hemisphere soft function, one can straightforwardly predict a number of potentially large logarithmic contributions at L loops not controlled by the factorization theorem for jet thrust.

The two-loop helicity amplitudes for $gg \to V_1 V_2 \to 4~\mathrm{leptons}$

We compute the two-loop massless QCD corrections to the helicity amplitudes for the production of two electroweak gauge bosons in the gluon fusion channel, $gg \to V_1 V_2$, keeping the virtuality of the vector bosons $V_1$ and $V_2$ arbitrary and taking their decays into leptons into account. The amplitudes are expressed in terms of master integrals, whose representation has been optimised for fast and reliable numerical evaluation. We provide analytical results and a public C++ code for their numerical evaluation on HepForge at http://vvamp.hepforge.org .

The two-loop helicity amplitudes for $q \bar q' \to V_1 V_2 \to 4~\mathrm{leptons}$

We compute the two-loop massless QCD corrections to the helicity amplitudes for the production of two massive vector bosons in quark-antiquark annihilation, allowing for an arbitrary virtuality of the vector bosons: $q \bar q' \to V_1V_2$. Combining with the leptonic decay currents, we obtain the full two-loop QCD description of the corresponding electroweak four-lepton production processes. The calculation is performed by projecting the two-loop diagrams onto an appropriate basis of Lorentz structures. All two-loop Feynman integrals are reduced to a basis of master integrals, which are then computed using the differential equations method and optimised for numerical performance. We provide a public C++ code which allows for fast and precise numerical evaluations of the amplitudes.

The two-loop soft function for heavy quark pair production at future linear colliders

We report on the calculation of the threshold soft function for heavy quark pair production in e+ e- annihilation at two-loop order. Our main result is a generalization of the familiar Drell-Yan threshold soft function to the case of non-zero primary quark mass. We set up a framework based on the method of differential equations which allows for the straightforward calculation of the bare soft function to arbitrarily high orders in the dimensional regularization parameter. Remarkably, we find that we can obtain the bare two-loop Drell-Yan soft function from the heavy quark soft function to the order in epsilon required for a two-loop calculation by making simple replacements. We expect that our results will be of use, both as an important input for precision physics calculations at linear colliders and, more formally, as a first step towards a better understanding of the connection between vacuum matrix elements of massive soft Wilson lines and vacuum matrix elements of massless soft Wilson lines.

N$^3$LO Higgs and Drell-Yan production at threshold: the one-loop two-emission contribution

In this paper, we study phenomenologically interesting soft radiation distributions in massless QCD. Specifically, we consider the emission of two soft partons off of a pair of light-like Wilson lines, in either the fundamental or the adjoint representation, at next-to-leading order. Our results are an essential component of the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order threshold corrections to both Higgs boson production in the gluon fusion channel and Drell-Yan lepton production. Our calculations are consistent with the recently published results for Higgs boson production. As a non-trivial cross-check on our analysis, we rederive a recent prediction for the Drell-Yan threshold cross section using a completely different strategy. Our results are compact, valid to all orders in the dimensional regularization parameter, and expressed in terms of pure functions.

Slepton pair production in association with a jet: NLO-QCD corrections and parton-shower effects

We present a calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to slepton pair production in association with a jet at the LHC together with their implementation in the POWHEG BOX. For the simulation of parton-shower effects and the decays of the sleptons we employ the multi-purpose Monte-Carlo program PYTHIA. We discuss the impact of next-to-leading order QCD corrections on experimentally accessible distributions and illustrate how the parton shower can modify observables that are sensitive to QCD radiation effects. Having full control on the hard jet in the process, we provide precise predictions also for monojet analyses.

The Two-Loop Master Integrals for $q \bar{q} \to V V$

We compute the full set of two-loop Feynman integrals appearing in massless two-loop four-point functions with two off-shell legs with the same invariant mass. These integrals allow to determine the two-loop corrections to the amplitudes for vector boson pair production at hadron colliders, $q \bar{q} \to V V$, and thus to compute this process to next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in QCD. The master integrals are derived using the method of differential equations, employing a canonical basis for the integrals. We obtain analytical results for all integrals, expressed in terms of multiple polylogarithms. We optimize our results for numerical evaluation by employing functions which are real valued for physical scattering kinematics and allow for an immediate power series expansion.

Massive planar and non-planar double box integrals for light Nf contributions to gg->tt

We present the master integrals needed for the light fermionic two-loop corrections to top quark pair production in the gluon fusion channel. Via the method of differential equations we compute the results in terms of multiple polylogarithms in a Laurent series about d=4, where d is the space-time dimension. The most involved topology is a non-planar double box with one internal mass. We employ the coproduct-augmented symbol calculus and show that significant simplifications are possible for selected results using an optimised set of multiple polylogarithms.

Slepton pair production in the POWHEG BOX

We present an implementation for slepton pair production at hadron colliders in the POWHEG BOX, a framework for combining next-to-leading order QCD calculations with parton-shower Monte-Carlo programs. Our code provides a SUSY Les Houches Accord interface for setting the supersymmetric input parameters. Decays of the sleptons and parton-shower effects are simulated with PYTHIA. Focussing on a representative point in the supersymmetric parameter space we show results for kinematic distributions that can be observed experimentally. While next-to-leading order QCD corrections are sizable for all distributions, the parton shower affects the color-neutral particles only marginally. Pronounced parton-shower effects are found for jet distributions.

The New F_L Measurement from HERA and the Dipole Model

From the new measurement of F_L at HERA we derive fixed-Q^2 averages <F_L/F_2>. We compare these with bounds which are rigorous in the framework of the standard dipole picture. The bounds are sharpened by including information on the charm structure function F_2^(c). Within the experimental errors the bounds are respected by the data. But for 3.5 GeV^2 <= Q^2 <= 20 GeV^2 the central values of the data are close to and in some cases even above the bounds. Data on F_L/F_2 significantly exceeding the bounds would rule out the standard dipole picture at these kinematic points. We discuss, furthermore, how data respecting the bounds but coming close to them can give information on questions like colour transparency, saturation and the dependencies of the dipole-proton cross section on the energy and the dipole size.

Top quark pairs at two loops and Reduze 2

We report on progress for the analytical calculation of the two-loop corrections to top quark pair production at hadron colliders. For the light fermionic corrections in the gluon channel, we discuss the analytical solution for the master integrals of a non-planar double box with a massive propagator. The result in terms of Goncharov's multiple polylogarithms is handled using systematic reductions based on the symbol map and the coproduct. We discuss new features of the computer program Reduze 2. It provides a fully distributed variant of Laporta's algorithm to reduce loop integrals. New graph matroid based algorithms allow to calculate shift relations between Feynman integrals in a fully automated way.

The Little Skyrmion: New Dark Matter for Little Higgs Models

We study skyrmions in the littlest Higgs model and discuss their possible role as dark matter candidates. Stable massive skyrmions can exist in the littlest Higgs model also in absence of an exact parity symmetry, since they carry a conserved topological charge due to the non-trivial third homotopy group of the SU(5)/SO(5) coset. We find a spherically symmetric skyrmion solution in this coset. The effects of gauge fields on the skyrmion solutions are analyzed and found to lead to an upper bound on the skyrmion mass. The relic abundance is in agreement with the observed dark matter density for reasonable parameter choices.

On the Energy Dependence of the Dipole-Proton Cross Section in Deep Inelastic Scattering

We study the dipole picture of high-energy virtual-photon-proton scattering. It is shown that different choices for the energy variable in the dipole cross section used in the literature are not related to each other by simple arguments equating the typical dipole size and the inverse photon virtuality, contrary to what is often stated. We argue that the good quality of fits to structure functions that use Bjorken-x as the energy variable - which is strictly speaking not justified in the dipole picture - can instead be understood as a consequence of the sign of scaling violations that occur for increasing Q^2 at fixed small x. We show that the dipole formula for massless quarks has the structure of a convolution. From this we obtain derivative relations between the structure function F_2 at large and small Q^2 and the dipole-proton cross section at small and large dipole size r, respectively.

Ioffe Times in DIS from a Dipole Model Fit

We present a study of Ioffe times in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering. We deduce 'experimental' Ioffe-time distributions from the small-x HERA data as described by a particular colour-dipole-model fit. We show distributions for three representative gamma*-proton c.m. energies W and various values of the photon virtuality Q^2. These distributions are rather broad for transversely and very narrow for longitudinally polarised virtual photons. The Ioffe times for W=150 GeV, for example, range from around 1000 fm for Q^2=1 GeV^2 to around 10 fm for Q^2=100 GeV^2. Based on our results we discuss consequences for the limitations of applicability of the dipole picture.
