A Note on Some Martingale Inequalities

We derive inequalities for time-discrete and time-continuous martingales that are similar to the well-known Burkholder inequalities. For the time-discrete case arbitrary martingales in $L^p(Ω)$ are treated, whereas in the time-continuous case martingales defined by Itô integrals w.r.t. a multi-dimensional Wiener process are considered. The estimates for the time-discrete martingales are related to the more general results by I. Pinelis (1994) and are proved to be sharp by a different and more elementary proof for this special setting. Further, for time-continuous martingales the presented inequalities are generalizations of similar estimates proved by M. Zakai (1967) and E. Rio (2009) to the general multi-dimensional case. Especially, these inequalities possess smaller constants compared to the ones that result if the original Burkholder inequalities would be applied for such estimates. Therefore, the presented inequalities are highly valuable in, e.g., stochastic analysis and stochastic numerics.

On the Approximation and Simulation of Iterated Stochastic Integrals and the Corresponding Lévy Areas in Terms of a Multidimensional Brownian Motion

A new algorithm for the approximation and simulation of twofold iterated stochastic integrals together with the corresponding Lévy areas driven by a multidimensional Brownian motion is proposed. The algorithm is based on a truncated Fourier series approach. However, the approximation of the remainder terms differs from the approach considered by Wiktrosson (2001). As the main advantage, the presented algorithm makes use of a diagonal covariance matrix for the approximation of one part of the remainder term and has a higher accuracy due to an exact approximation of the other part of the remainder. This results in a significant reduction of the computational cost compared to, e.g., the algorithm introduced by Wiktorsson. Convergence in $L^p(Ω)$-norm with $p \geq 2$ for the approximations calculated with the new algorithm as well as for approximations calculated by the basic truncated Fourier series algorithm is proved and the efficiency of the new algorithm is analyzed.

A Derivative-Free Milstein Type Approximation Method for SPDEs covering the Non-Commutative Noise case

Higher order schemes for stochastic partial differential equations that do not possess commutative noise require the simulation of iterated stochastic integrals. In this work, we propose a derivative-free Milstein type scheme to approximate the mild solution of stochastic partial differential equations that need not to fulfill a commutativity condition for the noise term and which can flexibly be combined with some approximation method for the involved iterated integrals. Recently, the authors introduced two algorithms to simulate such iterated stochastic integrals; these clear the way for the implementation of the proposed higher order scheme. We prove the mean-square convergence of the introduced derivative-free Milstein type scheme which attains the same order as the original Milstein scheme. The original scheme, however, is definitely outperformed when the computational cost is taken into account additionally, that is, in terms of the effective order of convergence. We derive the effective order of convergence for the derivative-free Milstein type scheme analytically in the case that one of the recently proposed algorithms for the approximation of the iterated stochastic integrals is applied. Compared to the exponential Euler scheme and the original Milstein scheme, the proposed derivative-free Milstein type scheme possesses at least the same and in most cases even a higher effective order of convergence depending on the particular SPDE under consideration. These analytical results are illustrated and confirmed with numerical simulations.

High order numerical integrators for single integrand Stratonovich SDEs

We show that applying any deterministic B-series method of order $p_d$ with a random step size to single integrand SDEs gives a numerical method converging in the mean-square and weak sense with order $\lfloor p_d/2\rfloor$.As an application, we derive high order energy-preserving methods for stochastic Poisson systems as well as further geometric numerical schemes for this wide class of Stratonovich SDEs.

Diagonally drift-implicit Runge-Kutta methods of weak order one and two for Itô SDEs and stability analysis

The class of stochastic Runge-Kutta methods for stochastic differential equations due to Rößler is considered. Coefficient families of diagonally drift-implicit stochastic Runge-Kutta (DDISRK) methods of weak order one and two are calculated. Their asymptotic stability as well as mean-square stability (MS-stability) properties are studied for a linear stochastic test equation with multiplicative noise. The stability functions for the DDISRK methods are determined and their domains of stability are compared to the corresponding domain of stability of the considered test equation. Stability regions are presented for various coefficients of the families of DDISRK methods in order to determine step size restrictions such that the numerical approximation reproduces the characteristics of the solution process.

On the Acceleration of the Multi-Level Monte Carlo Method

The multi-level Monte Carlo method proposed by M. Giles (2008) approximates the expectation of some functionals applied to a stochastic process with optimal order of convergence for the mean-square error. In this paper, a modified multi-level Monte Carlo estimator is proposed with significantly reduced computational costs. As the main result, it is proved that the modified estimator reduces the computational costs asymptotically by a factor $(p/α)^2$ if weak approximation methods of orders $α$ and $p$ are applied in case of computational costs growing with same order as variances decay.

Classification of Stochastic Runge-Kutta Methods for the Weak Approximation of Stochastic Differential Equations

In the present paper, a class of stochastic Runge-Kutta methods containing the second order stochastic Runge-Kutta scheme due to E. Platen for the weak approximation of Itô stochastic differential equation systems with a multi-dimensional Wiener process is considered. Order one and order two conditions for the coefficients of explicit stochastic Runge-Kutta methods are solved and the solution space of the possible coefficients is analyzed. A full classification of the coefficients for such stochastic Runge-Kutta schemes of order one and two with minimal stage numbers is calculated. Further, within the considered class of stochastic Runge-Kutta schemes coefficients for optimal schemes in the sense that additionally some higher order conditions are fulfilled are presented.

Continuous Weak Approximation for Stochastic Differential Equations

A convergence theorem for the continuous weak approximation of the solution of stochastic differential equations by general one step methods is proved, which is an extension of a theorem due to Milstein. As an application, uniform second order conditions for a class of continuous stochastic Runge-Kutta methods containing the continuous extension of the second order stochastic Runge-Kutta scheme due to Platen are derived. Further, some coefficients for optimal continuous schemes applicable to Itô stochastic differential equations with respect to a multi-dimensional Wiener process are presented.

Families of efficient second order Runge-Kutta methods for the weak approximation of Itô stochastic differential equations

Recently, a new class of second order Runge-Kutta methods for Itô stochastic differential equations with a multidimensional Wiener process was introduced by Rößler. In contrast to second order methods earlier proposed by other authors, this class has the advantage that the number of function evaluations depends only linearly on the number of Wiener processes and not quadratically. In this paper, we give a full classification of the coefficients of all explicit methods with minimal stage number. Based on this classification, we calculate the coefficients of an extension with minimized error constant of the well-known RK32 method to the stochastic case. For three examples, this method is compared numerically with known order two methods and yields very promising results.

Rooted Tree Analysis for Order Conditions of Stochastic Runge-Kutta Methods for the Weak Approximation of Stochastic Differential Equations

A general class of stochastic Runge-Kutta methods for the weak approximation of Itô and Stratonovich stochastic differential equations with a multi-dimensional Wiener process is introduced. Colored rooted trees are used to derive an expansion of the solution process and of the approximation process calculated with the stochastic Runge-Kutta method. A theorem on general order conditions for the coefficients and the random variables of the stochastic Runge-Kutta method is proved by rooted tree analysis. This theorem can be applied for the derivation of stochastic Runge-Kutta methods converging with an arbitrarily high order.

Stability Analysis and Classification of Runge-Kutta Methods for Index 1 Stochastic Differential-Algebraic Equations with Scalar Noise

The problem of solving stochastic differential-algebraic equations (SDAEs) of index one with a scalar driving Brownian motion is considered. Recently, the authors proposed a class of stiffly accurate stochastic Runge-Kutta (SRK) methods that do not involve any pseudo-inverses or projectors for the numerical solution of the problem. Based on this class of approximation methods, a classification for the coefficients of stiffly accurate SRK methods attaining strong order 0.5 as well as strong order 1.0 are calculated. Further, the mean-square stability for the considered class of SRK methods is analysed. As the main result, families of A-stable efficient order 0.5 and 1.0 stiffly accurate SRK methods with a minimal number of stages for SDEs as well as for SDAEs are presented.

Stochastic Taylor Expansions for Functionals of Diffusion Processes

In the present paper, a stochastic Taylor expansion of some functional applied to the solution process of an Itô or Stratonovich stochastic differential equation with a multi-dimensional driving Wiener process is given. Therefore, the multi-colored rooted tree analysis is applied in order to obtain a transparent representation of the expansion which is similar to the B-series expansion for solutions of ordinary differential equations in the deterministic setting. Further, some estimates for the mean--square and the mean truncation errors are given.

Stochastic Taylor expansions for the expectation of functionals of diffusion processes

Stochastic Taylor expansions of the expectation of functionals applied to diffusion processes which are solutions of stochastic differential equation systems are introduced. Taylor formulas w.r.t. increments of the time are presented for both, Itô and Stratonovich stochastic differential equation systems with multi-dimensional Wiener processes. Due to the very complex formulas arising for higher order expansions, an advantageous graphical representation by coloured trees is developed. The convergence of truncated formulas is analyzed and estimates for the truncation error are calculated. Finally, the stochastic Taylor formulas based on coloured trees turn out to be a generalization of the deterministic Taylor formulas using plain trees as recommended by Butcher for the solutions of ordinary differential equations.

Trees and asymptotic developments for fractional stochastic differential equations

In this paper we consider a n-dimensional stochastic differential equation driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H>1/3. After solving this equation in a rather elementary way, following the approach of Gubinelli, we show how to obtain an expansion for E[f(X\_t)] in terms of t, where X denotes the solution to the SDE and f:R^n->R is a regular function. With respect to the work by Baudoin and Coutin, where the same kind of problem is considered, we try an improvement in three different directions: we are able to take a drift into account in the equation, we parametrize our expansion with trees (which makes it easier to use), and we obtain a sharp control of the remainder.
