Correction methods for finite-acceptance effects in two-particle correlation analyses

Two-particle angular correlations have been widely used as a tool to explore particle production mechanisms in heavy-ion collisions. The mixed-event technique is generally used as a standard method to correct for finite-acceptance effects. We demonstrate that event mixing only provides an approximate acceptance correction, and propose new methods for finite-acceptance corrections. Starting from discussions about 2-dimensional correction procedures, new methods are derived for specific assumptions on the properties of the signal, such as uniform signal distribution or $δ$-function-like trigger particle distribution, and suitable for two-particle correlation analyses from particles at mid-rapidity and jet-hadron or high $p_{\text{T}}$-triggered hadron-hadron correlations. Per-trigger associated particle yields from the mixed-event method and the new methods are compared through Monte Carlo simulations containing well-defined correlation signals. Significant differences are observed at large pseudorapidity differences in general and especially for asymmetric particle distribution like that produced in proton--nucleus collisions. The applicability and validity of the new methods are discussed in detail.

PDF4LHC recommendations for LHC Run II

We provide an updated recommendation for the usage of sets of parton distribution functions (PDFs) and the assessment of PDF and PDF+$α_s$ uncertainties suitable for applications at the LHC Run II. We review developments since the previous PDF4LHC recommendation, and discuss and compare the new generation of PDFs, which include substantial information from experimental data from the Run I of the LHC. We then propose a new prescription for the combination of a suitable subset of the available PDF sets, which is presented in terms of a single combined PDF set. We finally discuss tools which allow for the delivery of this combined set in terms of optimized sets of Hessian eigenvectors or Monte Carlo replicas, and their usage, and provide some examples of their application to LHC phenomenology.

Results on Jet Spectra and Structure from ALICE

Full jet reconstruction in ALICE uses the combined information from charged and neutral particles. Essentially all jet constituents can be measured with large efficiency down to very low transverse momenta (pT > 150 MeV/c). This has the advantage to introduce a minimum bias on the jet fragmentation, in particular for low jet momenta and in the presence of quenching. In this article, we present preliminary results from reconstruction of charged jets in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 2.76 TeV. The inclusive charged jet spectrum, the jet nuclear modification factors (R_AA, R_CP), the ratio of spectra measured with different resolution parameters and hadron-jet correlations are discussed. For pp data at the same center of mass energy, the inclusive spectrum of fully reconstructed jets and its resolution parameter dependence are reported.
