Anderson t-modules with thin t-adic Galois representations

Pink has given a qualitative answer to the Mumford-Tate conjecture for Drinfeld modules in the 90s. He showed that the image of the v-adic Galois representation is v-adically open in the motivic Galois group for any prime v. In contrast to this result, we provide a family of uniformizable Anderson t-modules for which the Galois representations of their t-adic Tate-modules are "far from" having t-adically open image in their motivic Galois groups. Nevertheless, the image is still Zariski-dense in the motivic Galois group which is in accordance to the Mumford-Tate conjecture. For the proof, we explicitly determine the motivic Galois group as well as the Galois representation for these t-modules.

Taylor coefficients of Anderson generating functions and Drinfeld torsion extensions

We generalize our work on Carlitz prime power torsion extension to torsion extensions of Drinfeld modules of arbitrary rank. As in the Carlitz case, we give a description of these extensions in terms of evaluations of Anderson generating functions and their hyperderivatives at roots of unity. We also give a direct proof that the image of the Galois representation attached to the $\mathfrak{p}$-adic Tate module lies in the $\mathfrak{p}$-adic points of the motivic Galois group. This is a generalization of the corresponding result of Chang and Papanikolas for the $t$-adic case.

On field extensions given by periods of Drinfeld modules

In this short note, we answer a question raised by M. Papikian on a universal upper bound for the degree of the extension of $K_\infty$ given by adjoining the periods of a Drinfeld module of rank 2. We show that contrary to the rank 1 case such a universal upper bound does not exist, and the proof generalises to higher rank. Moreover, we give an upper and lower bound for the extension degree depending on the valuations of the defining coefficients of the Drinfeld module. In particular, the lower bound shows the non-existence of a universal upper bound.

Reduced group schemes as iterative differential Galois groups

This article is on the inverse Galois problem in Galois theory of linear iterative differential equations in positive characteristic. We show that it has an affirmative answer for reduced algebraic group schemes over any iterative differential field which is finitely generated over its algebraically closed field of constants. We also introduce the notion of equivalence of iterative derivations on a given field - a condition which implies that the inverse Galois problem over equivalent iterative derivations are equivalent.

A chain rule formula for higher derivations and inverses of polynomial maps

The multidimensional chain rule formula for analytic functions and its generalisation to higher derivatives perfectly work in the algebraic setting in characteristic zero. In positive characteristic one runs into problems due to denominators in these formulas. In this article we show a direct analog of these formulas using higher derivations which are defined in any characteristic. We also use these formulas to show how higher derivations to different coordinate systems are related to each other. Finally, we apply this to polynomial automorphisms in arbitrary characteristic and obtain a formula for the inverse of such a polynomial automorphism.

A categorical approach to Picard-Vessiot theory

Picard-Vessiot rings are present in many settings like differential Galois theory, difference Galois theory and Galois theory of Artinian simple module algebras. In this article we set up an abstract framework in which we can prove theorems on existence and uniqueness of Picard-Vessiot rings, as well as on Galois groups corresponding to the Picard-Vessiot rings. As the present approach restricts to the categorical properties which all the categories of differential modules resp. difference modules etc. share, it gives unified proofs for all these Galois theories (and maybe more general ones).

Non-free iterative differential modules

In the article "Picard-Vessiot theory of differentially simple rings" we established a Picard-Vessiot theory over differentially simple rings which may not be fields. Differential modules over such rings were proven to be locally free but do not have to be free as modules. In this article, we give a family of examples of non-free differential modules, and compute Picard-Vessiot rings as well as Galois groups for them.

Torsion group schemes as iterative differential Galois groups

We are considering iterative derivations on the function field L of abelian schemes in positive characteristic p>0, and give conditions when the torsion group schemes of this abelian scheme occur as ID-automorphism groups, i.e. are the ID-Galois groups of L over certain ID-subfields. For an explicit example, we even give a construction of (a family of) such iterative derivations.

Picard-Vessiot theory of differentially simple rings

In Picard-Vessiot theory, the Galois theory for linear differential equations, the Picard-Vessiot ring plays an important role, since it is the Picard-Vessiot ring which is a torsor (principal homogeneous space) for the Galois group (scheme). Like fields are simple rings having only (0) and (1) as ideals, the Picard-Vessiot ring is a differentially simple ring, i.e. a differential ring having only (0) and (1) as differential ideals. Having in mind that the classical Galois theory is a theory of extensions of fields, i.e. of simple rings, it is quite natural to ask whether one can also set up a Picard-Vessiot theory where the base is not a differential field, but more general a differentially simple ring. It is the aim of this article to give a positive answer to this question, i.e. to set up such a differential Galois theory.

On the finite inverse problem in iterative differential Galois theory

In positive characteristic, nearly all Picard-Vessiot extensions are inseparable over some intermediate iterative differential extensions. In the Galois correspondence, these intermediate fields correspond to nonreduced subgroup schemes of the Galois group scheme. Moreover, the Galois group scheme itself may be nonreduced, or even infinitesimal. In this article, we investigate which finite group schemes occur as iterative differential Galois group schemes over a given ID-field. For a large class of ID-fields, we give a description of all occuring finite group schemes.

On the finite generation of additive group invariants in positive characteristic

Roberts, Freudenburg, and Daigle and Freudenburg have given the smallest counterexamples to Hilbert's fourteenth problem as rings of invariants of algebraic groups. Each is of an action of the additive group on a finite dimensional vector space over a field of characteristic zero, and thus, each is the kernel of a locally nilpotent derivation. In positive characteristic, additive group actions correspond to locally finite iterative higher derivations. We set up characteristic-free analogs of the three examples, and show that, contrary to characteristic zero, in every positive charateristic, the invariants are finitely generated.

Galois theory for iterative connections and nonreduced Galois groups

This article presents a theory of modules with iterative connection. This theory is a generalisation of the theory of modules with connection in characteristic zero to modules over rings of arbitrary characteristic. We show that these modules with iterative connection (and also the modules with integrable iterative connection) form a Tannakian category, assuming some nice properties for the underlying ring, and we show how this generalises to modules over schemes. We also relate these notions to stratifications on modules, as introduced by A. Grothendieck in order to extend integrable (ordinary) connections to finite characteristic. Over smooth rings, we obtain an equivalence of stratifications and integrable iterative connections. Furthermore, over a regular ring in positive characteristic, we show that the category of modules with integrable iterative connection is also equivalent to the category of flat bundles as defined by D. Gieseker. In the second part of this article, we set up a Picard-Vessiot theory for fields of solutions. For such a Picard-Vessiot extension, we obtain a Galois correspondence, which takes into account even nonreduced closed subgroup schemes of the Galois group scheme on one hand and inseparable intermediate extensions of the Picard-Vessiot extension on the other hand. Finally, we compare our Galois theory with the Galois theory for purely inseparable field extensions.

Infinitesimal group schemes as iterative differential Galois groups

This article is concerned with Galois theory for iterative differential fields (ID-fields) in positive characteristic. More precisely, we consider purely inseparable Picard-Vessiot extensions, because these are the ones having an infinitesimal group scheme as iterative differential Galois group. In this article we prove a necessary and sufficient condition to decide whether an infinitesimal group scheme occurs as Galois group scheme of a Picard-Vessiot extension over a given ID-field or not. In particular, this solves the inverse ID-Galois problem for infinitesimal group schemes.
