The Ill-Posed Foundations of Physics-Informed Neural Networks and Their Finite-Difference Variants

Physics-informed neural networks based on automatic differentiation (AD-PINNs) and their finite-difference counterparts (FD-PINNs) are widely used for solving partial differential equations (PDEs), yet their analytical properties remain poorly understood. This work provides a unified mathematical foundation for both formulations. Under mild regularity assumptions on the activation function and for sufficiently wide neural networks of depth at least two, we prove that both the AD- and FD-PINN optimization problems are ill-posed: whenever a minimizer exists, there are in fact infinitely many, and uniqueness fails regardless of the choice of collocation points or finite-difference stencil. Nevertheless, we establish two structural properties. First, whenever the underlying PDE or its finite-difference discretization admits a solution, the corresponding AD-PINN or FD-PINN loss also admits a minimizer, realizable by a neural network of finite width. Second, FD-PINNs are tightly coupled to the underlying finite-difference scheme: every FD-PINN minimizer agrees with a finite-difference minimizer on the grid, and in regimes where the discrete PDE solution is unique, all zero-loss FD-PINN minimizers coincide with the discrete PDE solution on the stencil. Numerical experiments illustrate these theoretical insights: FD-PINNs remain stable in representative forward and inverse problems, including settings where AD-PINNs may fail to converge. We also include an inverse problem with noisy data, demonstrating that FD-PINNs retain robustness in this setting as well. Taken together, our results clarify the analytical limitations of AD-PINNs and explain the structural reasons for the more stable behavior observed in FD-PINNs.

Higher displays arising from filtered de Rham-Witt complexes

For a smooth projective scheme $X$ over a ring $R$ on which $p$ is nilpotent that meets some general assumptions we prove that the crystalline cohomology is equipped with the structure of a higher display which is a relative version of Fontaine's strongly divisible lattices. Frobenius-divisibilty is induced by the Nygaard filtration on the relative de Rham-Witt complex. For a nilpotent PD-thickening $S/R$ we also consider the associated relative display and can describe it explicitly by a relative version of the Nygaard filtration on the de Rham-Witt complex associated to a lifting of $X$ over $S$. We prove that there is a crystal of relative displays if moreover the mod $p$ reduction of $X$ has a smooth and versal deformation space.

Overconvergent de Rham-Witt cohomology for semistable varieties

We define an overconvergent version of the Hyodo-Kato complex for semistable varieties $Y$ over perfect fields of positive characteristic, and prove that its hypercohomology tensored with $\mathbb{Q}$ recovers the log-rigid cohomology when $Y$ is quasi-projective. We then describe the monodromy operator using the overconvergent Hyodo-Kato complex. Finally, we show that overconvergent Hyodo-Kato cohomology agrees with log-crystalline cohomology in the projective semistable case.

Automated Parameter Selection for Total Variation Minimization in Image Restoration

Algorithms for automatically selecting a scalar or locally varying regularization parameter for total variation models with an $L^τ$-data fidelity term, $τ\in \{1,2\}$, are presented. The automated selection of the regularization parameter is based on the discrepancy principle, whereby in each iteration a total variation model has to be minimized. In the case of a locally varying parameter this amounts to solve a multi-scale total variation minimization problem. For solving the constituted multi-scale total variation model convergent first and second order methods are introduced and analyzed. Numerical experiments for image denoising and image deblurring show the efficiency, the competitiveness, and the performance of the proposed fully automated scalar and locally varying parameter selection algorithms.

Overconvergent Witt Vectors

Let A be a finitely generated algebra over a field K of characteristic p >0. We introduce a subring of the ring of Witt vectors W(A). We call it the ring of overconvergent Witt vectors. We prove that on a scheme X of finite type over K the overconvergent Witt vectors are an étale sheaf. In a forthcoming paper (Annales ENS) we define an overconvergent de Rham-Witt complex on a smooth scheme X over a perfect field K whose hypercohomology is the rigid cohomology of X in the sense of Berthelot.
