A lattice QCD perspective on weak decays of b and c quarks Snowmass 2022 White Paper

Lattice quantum chromodynamics has proven to be an indispensable method to determine nonperturbative strong contributions to weak decay processes. In this white paper for the Snowmass community planning process we highlight achievements and future avenues of research for lattice calculations of weak $b$ and $c$ quark decays, and point out how these calculations will help to address the anomalies currently in the spotlight of the particle physics community. With future increases in computational resources and algorithmic improvements, percent level (and below) lattice determinations will play a central role in constraining the standard model or identifying new physics.

Lattice QCD and the Computational Frontier

The search for new physics requires a joint experimental and theoretical effort. Lattice QCD is already an essential tool for obtaining precise model-free theoretical predictions of the hadronic processes underlying many key experimental searches, such as those involving heavy flavor physics, the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, nucleon-neutrino scattering, and rare, second-order electroweak processes. As experimental measurements become more precise over the next decade, lattice QCD will play an increasing role in providing the needed matching theoretical precision. Achieving the needed precision requires simulations with lattices with substantially increased resolution. As we push to finer lattice spacing we encounter an array of new challenges. They include algorithmic and software-engineering challenges, challenges in computer technology and design, and challenges in maintaining the necessary human resources. In this white paper we describe those challenges and discuss ways they are being dealt with. Overcoming them is key to supporting the community effort required to deliver the needed theoretical support for experiments in the coming decade.

$D$-meson semileptonic form factors at zero momentum transfer in (2+1+1)-flavor lattice QCD

We present a calculation of the $D\to K \ell ν$ and $D\toπ\ell ν$ semileptonic form factors at $q^2=0$, which enable determinations of the CKM matrix elements $\lvert{V_{cs}}\rvert$ and $\lvert{V_{cd}}\rvert$, respectively. We use gauge-field configurations generated by the MILC collaboration with four flavors of highly-improved staggered (HISQ) quarks, analyzing several ensembles including those with physical pion masses and approximate lattice spacings ranging from 0.12~fm to 0.042~fm. We also use the HISQ action for the valence quarks. We employ twisted boundary conditions to calculate the form factors at zero momentum transfer directly. We use heavy-light-meson chiral perturbation theory modified for energetic pions and kaons, and supplemented by terms to describe the lattice-spacing dependence, to obtain preliminary results at the physical point and in the continuum limit.

Semileptonic form factor ratio B_s->D_s/B->D and its application to BR(B^0_s->μ^+μ^-)

We present a (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD calculation of the form factor ratio between the semileptonic decays $\bar{B}^0_s \to D^+_sl^-\barν $ and $\bar{B}^0 \to D^+l^-\barν $. This ratio is an important theoretical input to the hadronic determination of the $B$ meson fragmentation fraction ratio $f_s/f_d$ which enters in the measurement of $\mathrm{BR}(B^0_s\to μ^+μ^-)$. Small lattice spacings and high statistics enable us to simulate the decays with a dynamic final $D$ meson of small momentum and reliably extract the hadronic matrix elements at nonzero recoil. We report our preliminary result for the form factor ratio at the corresponding momentum transfer of the two decays $f_0^{(s)}(M^2_π)/f_0^{(d)}(M^2_K)$.

B-Bbar Mixing and Matching with Fermilab Heavy Quarks

We discuss the matching procedure for heavy-light 4-quark operators using the Fermilab method for heavy quarks and staggered fermions for light quarks. These ingredients enable us to construct the continuum-limit operator needed to determine the oscillation frequency of neutral B mesons. The matching is then carried out at the one-loop level. We also present an updated preliminary result for the SU(3)-breaking ratio ξ, based on calculations using the MILC Collaboration's ensembles of lattice gauge fields.
