Propagation for KPP bulk-surface systems in a general cylindrical domain

In this paper, we investigate propagation phenomena for KPP bulk-surface systems in a cylindrical domain with general section and heterogeneous coefficients. As for the scalar KPP equation, we show that the asymptotic spreading speed of solutions can be computed in terms of the principal eigenvalues of a family of self-adjoint elliptic operators. Using this characterization, we analyze the dependence of the spreading speed on various parameters, including diffusion rates and the size and shape of the section of the domain. In particular, we provide new theoretical results on several asymptotic regimes like small and high diffusion rates and sections with small and large sizes. These results generalize earlier ones which were available in the radial homogeneous case. Finally, we numerically investigate the issue of shape optimization of the spreading speed. By computing its shape derivative, we observe, in the case of homogeneous coefficients, that a disk either maximizes or minimizes the speed, depending on the parameters of the problem, both with or without constraints. We also show the results of numerical shape optimization with non homogeneous coefficients, when the disk is no longer an optimizer.

On the number of positive solutions to an indefinite parameter-dependent Neumann problem

We study the second-order boundary value problem \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \, -u''=a_{λ,μ}(t) \, u^{2}(1-u), & t\in(0,1), \\ \, u'(0)=0, \quad u'(1)=0, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $a_{λ,μ}$ is a step-wise indefinite weight function, precisely $a_{λ,μ}\equivλ$ in $[0,σ]\cup[1-σ,1]$ and $a_{λ,μ}\equiv-μ$ in $(σ,1-σ)$, for some $σ\in\left(0,\frac{1}{2}\right)$, with $λ$ and $μ$ positive real parameters. We investigate the topological structure of the set of positive solutions which lie in $(0,1)$ as $λ$ and $μ$ vary. Depending on $λ$ and based on a phase-plane analysis and on time-mapping estimates, our findings lead to three different (from the topological point of view) global bifurcation diagrams of the solutions in terms of the parameter $μ$. Finally, for the first time in the literature, a qualitative bifurcation diagram concerning the number of solutions in the $(λ,μ)$-plane is depicted. The analyzed Neumann problem has an application in the analysis of stationary solutions to reaction-diffusion equations in population genetics driven by migration and selection.

Propagation speed in a strip bounded by a line with different diffusion

In this paper we consider a model for the diffusion of a population in a strip-shaped field, where the growth of the species is governed by a Fisher-KPP equation and which is bounded on one side by a road where the species can have a different diffusion coefficient. Dirichlet homogeneous boundary conditions are imposed on the other side of the strip. We prove the existence of an asymptotic speed of propagation which is greater than the one of the case without road and study its behavior for small and large diffusions on the road. Finally we prove that, when the width of the strip goes to infinity, the asymptotic speed of propagation approaches the one of an half-plane bounded by a road, case that has been recently studied in [2],[3].

The effect on Fisher-KPP propagation in a cylinder with fast diffusion on the boundary

In this paper we consider a reaction-diffusion equation of Fisher-KPP type inside an infinite cylindrical domain in $\mathbb{R}^{N+1}$, coupled with a reaction-diffusion equation on the boundary of the domain, where potentially fast diffusion is allowed. We will study the existence of an asymptotic speed of propagation for solutions of the Cauchy problem associated with such system, as well as the dependence of this speed on the diffusivity at the boundary and the amplitude of the cylinder. When $N=1$ the domain reduces to a strip between two straight lines. This models the effect of two roads with fast diffusion on a strip-shaped field bounded by them.

Imperfect bifurcations via topological methods in superlinear indefinite problems

In [5] the structure of the bifurcation diagrams of a class of superlinear indefinite problems with a symmetric weight was ascertained, showing that they consist of a primary branch and secondary loops bifurcating from it. In [4] it has been proved that, when the weight is asymmetric, the bifurcation diagrams are no longer connected since parts of the primary branch and loops of the symmetric case form an arbitrarily high number of isolas. In this work we give a deeper insight on this phenomenon, studying how the secondary bifurcations break as the weight is perturbed from the symmetric situation. Our proofs rely on the approach of [5,4], i.e. on the construction of certain Poincaré maps and the study of how they vary as some of the parameters of the problems change, constructing in this way the bifurcation diagrams.
