Control problems with differential constraints of higher order

We consider cost minimising control problems, in which the dynamical system is constrained by higher order differential equations of Euler-Lagrange type. Following ideas from a previous paper by the first and the third author, we prove that a curve of controls $u_o(t)$ and a set of initial conditions $σ_o$ gives an optimal solution for a control problem of the considered type if and only if an appropriate double integral is greater than or equal to zero along any homotopy $(u(t, s), σ(s))$ of control curves and initial data starting from $u_o(t) = u(t, 0)$ and $σ_o = σ(0)$. This property is called "Principle of Minimal Labour". From this principle we derive a generalisation of the classical Pontryagin Maximum Principle that holds under higher order differential constraints of Euler-Lagrange type and without the hypothesis of fixed initial data.

Lorentzian manifolds with shearfree congruences and Kähler-Sasaki geometry

We study Lorentzian manifolds $(M, g)$ of dimension $n\geq 4$, equipped with a maximally twisting shearfree null vector field $p_o$, for which the leaf space $S = M/\{\exp t p_o\}$ is a smooth manifold. If $n = 2k$, the quotient $S = M/\{\exp t p_o\}$ is naturally equipped with a subconformal structure of contact type and, in the most interesting cases, it is a regular Sasaki manifold projecting onto a quantisable Kähler manifold of real dimension $2k -2$. Going backwards through this line of ideas, for any quantisable Kähler manifold with associated Sasaki manifold $S$, we give the local description of all Lorentzian metrics $g$ on the total spaces $M$ of $A$-bundles $π: M \to S$, $A = S^1, \mathbb R$, such that the generator of the group action is a maximally twisting shearfree $g$-null vector field $p_o$. We also prove that on any such Lorentzian manifold $(M, g)$ there exists a non-trivial generalized electromagnetic plane wave having $p_o$ as propagating direction field, a result that can be considered as a generalization of the classical $4$-dimensional Robinson Theorem. We finally construct a 2-parametric family of Einstein metrics on a trivial bundle $M = \mathbb R \times S$ for any prescribed value of the Einstein constant. If $\dim M = 4$, the Ricci flat metrics obtained in this way are the well-known Taub-NUT metrics.

Hyperkähler cones and instantons on quaternionic Kähler manifolds

We present a novel approach to the study of Yang-Mills instantons on quaternionic Kähler manifolds, based on an extension of the harmonic space method of constructing instantons on hyperkähler manifolds. Our results establish a bijection between local equivalence classes of instantons on quaternionic Kähler manifolds M and equivalence classes of certain holomorphic maps on an appropriate SL_2(C)-bundle over the Swann bundle of M.

Instantons on hyperkähler manifolds

An instanton $(E, D)$ on a (pseudo-)hyperkähler manifold $M$ is a vector bundle $E$ associated to a principal $G$-bundle with a connection $D$ whose curvature is pointwise invariant under the quaternionic structures of $T_x M, \ x\in M$, and thus satisfies the Yang-Mills equations. Revisiting a construction of solutions, we prove a local bijection between gauge equivalence classes of instantons on $M$ and equivalence classes of certain holomorphic functions taking values in the Lie algebra of $G^\mathbb{C}$ defined on an appropriate $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$-bundle over $M$. Our reformulation affords a streamlined proof of Uhlenbeck's Compactness Theorem for instantons on (pseudo-)hyperkähler manifolds.

On pseudo-hyperkähler prepotentials

An explicit surjection from a set of (locally defined) unconstrained holomorphic functions on a certain submanifold of (Sp_1(C) \times C^{4n}) onto the set HK_{p,q} of local isometry classes of real analytic pseudo-hyperkähler metrics of signature (4p,4q) in dimension 4n is constructed. The holomorphic functions, called prepotentials, are analogues of Kähler potentials for Kähler metrics and provide a complete parameterisation of HK_{p,q}. In particular, there exists a bijection between HK_{p,q} and the set of equivalence classes of prepotentials. This affords the explicit construction of pseudo-hyperkähler metrics from specified prepotentials. The construction generalises one due to Galperin, Ivanov, Ogievetsky and Sokatchev. Their work is given a coordinate-free formulation and complete, self-contained proofs are provided. An appendix provides a vital tool for this construction: a reformulation of real analytic G-structures in terms of holomorphic frame fields on complex manifolds.

Structure equations of Levi degenerate CR hypersurfaces of uniform type

We explicitly determine the structure equations of 5-dimensional Levi 2-nondegenerate CR hypersurfaces, using our recently constructed canonical Cartan connection for this class of CR manifolds. We also give an outline of the basic properties of absolute parallelisms and Cartan connections, together with a brief discussion of the absolute parallelisms for such CR manifolds existing in the literature.

Lie algebras of conservation laws of variational partial differential equations

We establish a version of the first Noether Theorem, according to which the (equivalence classes of) conserved quantities of given Euler-Lagrange equations in several independent variables are in one-to-one correspondence with the (equivalence classes of) vector fields satisfying an appropriate pair of geometric conditions, namely: (a) they preserve the class of vector fields tangent to holonomic submanifolds of a jet space; (b) they leave invariant the action, from which the Euler-Lagrange equations are derived, modulo terms identically vanishing along holonomic submanifolds. Such correspondence between symmetries and conservation laws is built on an explicit linear map f_A from the vector fields satisfying (a) and (b) into the conserved differential operators, and not into their divergences as it occurs in other proofs of Noether Theorem. This map f_A is not new: it is the map determined by contracting symmetries with a form of Poincare'-Cartan type A and it is essentially the same considered for instance in a paper by Kupershmidt. There it was shown that f_A determines a bijection between symmetries and conservation laws in a special form. Here we show that, if appropriate regularity assumptions are satisfied, any conservation law is equivalent to one that belongs to the image of f_A, proving that the corresponding induced map F_A between equivalence classes of symmetries and equivalence classes of conservation laws is actually a bijection. All results are given coordinate-free formulations and rely just on basic differential geometric properties of finite-dimensional manifolds.

Lie algebras of conservation laws of variational ordinary differential equations

We establish a new version of the first Noether Theorem, according to which the (equivalence classes of) first integrals of given Euler-Lagrange equations in one independent variable are in exact one-to-one correspondence with the (equivalence classes of) vector fields satisfying two simple geometric conditions, namely they simultaneously preserve the holonomy distribution of the jets space and the action from which the Euler-Lagrange equations are derived.

Modular data and regularity of Monge-Ampère exhaustions and of Kobayashi distance

Regularity properties of intrinsic objects for a large class of Stein Manifolds, namely of Monge-Ampère exhaustions and Kobayashi distance, is interpreted in terms of modular data. The results lead to a construction of an infinite dimensional family of convex domains with squared Kobayashi distance of prescribed regularity properties. A new sharp refinement of Stoll's characterization of $\mathbb C^n$ is also given.

On moduli spaces of Ricci solitons

We study deformations of shrinking Ricci solitons on a compact manifold M, generalising the classical theory of deformations of Einstein metrics. Using appropriate notions of twisted slices S_f inside the space of all Riemannian metrics on M, we define the infinitesimal solitonic deformations and the local solitonic pre-moduli spaces. We prove the existence of a finite dimensional submanifold of S_f x C^infty(M), which contains the pre-moduli space of solitons around a fixed shrinking Ricci soliton as an analytic subset. We define solitonic rigidity and give criteria which imply it.

The equivalence problem for 5-dimensional Levi degenerate CR manifolds

Let M be a CR manifold of hypersurface type, which is Levi degenerate but also satisfying a k-nondegeneracy condition at all points. This might be only if dim M is greater than or equal to 5 and if dim M = 5, then k= 2 at all points. We prove that for any 5-dimensional, uniformly 2-nondegenerate CR manifold M there exists a canonical Cartan connection, modelled on a suitable projective completion of the tube over the future light cone {z\in C^3: (x^1)^2+(x^2)^2-(x^3)^2 = 0, x^3>0}. This determines a complete solution to the equivalence problem for this class of CR manifolds.

Kähler Ricci solitons and deformation of complex structures

Given a compact Fano Kähler manifold (M,J) with a Kähler Ricci soliton g, we consider smooth families {J_t} of complex deformations of (M,J) which are invariant under the action of a maximal torus T in the full isometry group of (M,g). We prove that, under a certain condition on the spectrum of the Laplacian of g, there exists a smooth family of T-invariant Kähler Ricci solitons g_t on every complex manifold (M, J_t) with J_t sufficiently close to J. The result extends a theorem by Koiso on complex deformations of Kähler Einstein manifolds.

Six-dimensional nearly Kaehler manifolds of cohomogeneity one (II)

Let M be a six dimensional manifold, endowed with a cohomogeneity one action of G= SU_2 x SU_2, and M_reg its subset of regular points. We show that M_reg admits a smooth, 2-parameter family of G-invariant, non-isometric strict nearly Kaehler structures and that a 1-parameter subfamily of such structures smoothly extend over a singular orbit of type S^3. This determines a new class of examples of nearly Kaehler structures on TS^3

Steepest descent curves of convex functions on surfaces of constant curvature

Let S be a complete surface of constant curvature K = + 1 or -1, i.e. the sphere S^2 or the Lobachevskij plane L^2, and D a bounded convex subset of S. If S = S^2, assume also diameter (D) < pi/2. It is proved that the length of any steepest descent curve of a quasi-convex function in D is less than or equal to the perimeter of D. This upper bound is actually proved for the class of G-curves, a family of curves that naturally includes all steepest descent curves. In case S = S^2, it is also proved the existence of G-curves, whose length is equal to the perimeter of their convex hull, showing that the above estimate is indeed optimal. The results generalize theorems by Manselli and Pucci on steepest descent curves in the Euclidean plane.
