Exact Infrared Triangle in Massless sQED with Long-range Interactions

The logarithmic soft photon theorem in four spacetime dimensions encodes an infinite-dimensional asymptotic symmetry which acts on massive matter as a divergent superphaserotation. Here we extend this result to massless matter which is both more subtle and surprising. We derive the charge associated to divergent superphaserotations and show that it exactly vanishes to all orders in the electromagnetic coupling. This is in agreement with the vanishing of the classical logarithmic soft photon theorem which is one-loop exact. Special care is required for massless matter due to potential collinear divergences which, as we show, do however not affect the superphaserotation charge. We furthermore compute the infrared corrections to the charge associated to the subleading tree-level soft photon theorem. As a corollary of our result, we find that the tail to the velocity kick memory due to the long-range interactions between soft electromagnetic radiation and massless matter vanishes.

Long-Range Interactions in Celestial CFT

Loop corrections in QED and gravity have recently been conjectured to give rise to an infinite tower of logarithmic soft theorems governing the universal low-energy behavior of photons and gravitons. We explore the implications of this tower for celestial CFT and for the algebra of conformally soft operators. The symmetry-governed part of the tower of logarithmic soft factors is shown to exponentiate, which demonstrates that these loop effects do not represent independent multi-particle interactions, but instead are rooted in the long-range exchange of gauge bosons between pairs of hard operator insertions. We define conformally soft loop operators, and compute their operator product expansions on the celestial sphere. The associated Ward identities exhibit characteristic non-local behaviors, which reflect the pair-wise interactions between hard operator insertions mediated by gauge bosons. We comment on the implications of these results for the soft operator algebra at loop order.

Goldilocks Modes and the Three Scattering Bases

We consider massless scattering from the point of view of the position, momentum, and celestial bases. In these three languages different properties of physical processes become manifest or obscured. Within the soft sector, they highlight distinct aspects of the infrared triangle: quantum field theory soft theorems arise in the limit of vanishing energy $ω$, memory effects are described via shifts of fields at the boundary along the null time coordinate $u$, and celestial symmetry algebras are realized via currents that appear at special values of the conformal dimension $Δ$. We focus on the subleading soft theorems at $Δ=1-s$ for gauge theory $(s=1)$ and gravity $(s=2)$ and explore how to translate the infrared triangle to the celestial basis. We resolve an existing tension between proposed overleading gauge transformations as examined in the position basis and the `Goldstone-like' modes where we expect celestial symmetry generators to appear. In the process we elucidate various order-of-limits issues implicit in the celestial formalism. We then generalize our construction to the tower of $w_{1+\infty}$ generators in celestial CFT, which probe further subleading-in-$ω$ soft behavior and are related to subleading-in-$r$ vacuum transitions that measure higher multipole moments of scatterers. In the end we see that the celestial basis is `just right' for identifying the symmetry structure.

Conformally Soft Fermions

Celestial diamonds encode the global conformal multiplets of the conformally soft sector, elucidating the role of soft theorems, symmetry generators and Goldstone modes. Upon adding supersymmetry they stack into a pyramid. Here we treat the soft charges associated to the fermionic layers that tie this structure together. This extends the analysis of conformally soft currents for photons and gravitons which have been shown to generate asymptotic symmetries in gauge theory and gravity to infinite-dimensional fermionic symmetries. We construct fermionic charge operators in 2D celestial CFT from a suitable inner product between 4D bulk field operators and spin $s=\frac{1}{2}$ and $\frac{3}{2}$ conformal primary wavefunctions with definite SL(2,$\mathbb{C}$) conformal dimension $Δ$ and spin $J$ where $|J|\leq s$. The generator for large supersymmetry transformations is identified as the conformally soft gravitino primary operator with $Δ=\frac{1}{2}$ and its shadow with $Δ=\frac{3}{2}$ which form the left and right corners of the celestial gravitino diamond. We continue this analysis to the subleading soft gravitino and soft photino which are captured by degenerate celestial diamonds. Despite the absence of a gauge symmetry in these cases, they give rise to conformally soft factorization theorems in celestial amplitudes and complete the celestial pyramid.

Loops on the Celestial Sphere

We study the effect of loop corrections to conformal correlators on the celestial sphere at null infinity. We first analyze finite one-loop celestial amplitudes in pure Yang-Mills theory and Einstein gravity. We then turn to our main focus: infrared divergent loop amplitudes in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. We compute the celestial one-loop amplitude in dimensional regularization and show that it can be recast as an operator acting on the celestial tree-level amplitude. This extends to any loop order and the re-summation of all planar loops enables us to write down an expression for the all-loop celestial amplitude. Finally, we show that the exponentiated all-loop expression given by the BDS formula gets promoted on the celestial sphere to an operator acting on the tree-level conformal correlation function, thus yielding, the celestial BDS formula.

AdS_3: the NHEK generation

It was argued in arXiv:1203.4227 that the five-dimensional near-horizon extremal Kerr (NHEK) geometry can be embedded in String Theory as the infrared region of an infinite family of non-supersymmetric geometries that have D1, D5, momentum and KK monopole charges. We show that there exists a method to embed these geometries into asymptotically-AdS_3 x S^3/Z_N solutions, and hence to obtain infinite families of flows whose infrared is NHEK. This indicates that the CFT dual to the NHEK geometry is the IR fixed point of a Renormalization Group flow from a known local UV CFT and opens the door to its explicit construction.

Remarks on brane and antibrane dynamics

We develop the point of view that brane actions should be understood in the context of effective field theory, and that this is the correct way to treat classical as well as loop divergences. We illustrate this idea in a simple model. We then consider the implications for the dynamics of antibranes in flux backgrounds, focusing on the simplest case of a single antibrane. We argue that there is no tachyonic instability at zero temperature, but there is a nonperturbative process in which an antibrane annihilates with its screening cloud. This is distinct from the NS5-brane instanton decay. Constraints on models of metastable supersymmetry breaking by antibranes may be tightened, but there is no problem of principle with this mechanism.

Tunneling into Microstate Geometries: Quantum Effects Stop Gravitational Collapse

Collapsing shells form horizons, and when the curvature is small classical general relativity is believed to describe this process arbitrarily well. On the other hand, quantum information theory based (fuzzball/firewall) arguments suggest the existence of some structure at the black hole horizon. This structure can only form if classical general relativity stops being the correct description of the collapsing shell before it reaches the horizon size. We present strong evidence that classical general relativity can indeed break down prematurely, by explicitly computing the quantum tunneling amplitude of a collapsing shell of branes into smooth horizonless microstate geometries. We show that the amplitude for tunneling into microstate geometries with a large number of topologically non-trivial cycles is parametrically larger than exp(-S), which indicates that the shell can tunnel into a horizonless configuration long before the horizon has any chance to form. We also use this technology to investigate the tunneling of M2 branes into LLM bubbling geometries.

Journey to the Center of the Fuzzball

We study two-charge fuzzball geometries, with attention to the use of the proper duality frame. For zero angular momentum there is an onion-like structure, and the smooth D1-D5 geometries are not valid for typical states. Rather, they are best approximated by geometries with stringy sources, or by a free CFT. For non-zero angular momentum we find a regime where smooth fuzzball solutions are the correct description. Our analysis rests on the comparison of three radii: the typical fuzzball radius, the entropy radius determined by the microscopic theory, and the breakdown radius where the curvature becomes large. We attempt to draw more general lessons.

Metastability in Bubbling AdS Space

We study the dynamics of probe M5 branes with dissolved M2 charge in bubbling geometries with SO(4) x SO(4) symmetry. These solutions were constructed by Bena-Warner and Lin-Lunin-Maldacena and correspond to the vacua of the maximally supersymmetric mass-deformed M2 brane theory. We find that supersymmetric probe M2 branes polarize into M5 brane shells whose backreaction creates an additional bubble in the geometry. We explicitly check that the supersymmetric polarization potential agrees with the one found within the Polchinski-Strassler approximation. The main result of this paper is that probe M2 branes whose orientation is opposite to the background flux can polarize into metastable M5 brane shells. These decay to a supersymmetric configuration via brane-flux annihilation. Our findings suggest the existence of metastable states in the mass-deformed M2 brane theory.

Almost BPS but still not renormalized

A key feature of BPS multi-center solutions is that the equations controlling the positions of these centers are not renormalized as one goes from weak to strong coupling. In particular, this means that brane probes can capture the same information as the fully back-reacted supergravity solution. We investigate this non-renormalization property for non-supersymmetric, extremal "almost-BPS" solutions at intermediate coupling when one of the centers is considered as a probe in the background created by the other centers. We find that despite the lack of supersymmetry, the probe action reproduces exactly the equations underlying the fully back-reacted solution, which indicates that these equations also do not receive quantum corrections. In the course of our investigation we uncover the relation between the charge parameters of almost-BPS supergravity solutions and their quantized charges, which solves an old puzzle about the quantization of the charges of almost-BPS solutions.

Insane Anti-Membranes?

The backreactions of anti-branes on a variety of supergravity backgrounds have been shown in a recent series of papers to be riled by some unexplained flux singularities. All of the situations studied so far involve backgrounds with (close to) AdS-asymptotics. It is the purpose of this work to study the backreaction of anti-M2 branes on a background exhibiting a different UV behavior: The so-called $\mathbb{A}_8$ regular solution of eleven-dimensional supergravity that we consider has "Taub-NUT type" asymptotics. As it turns out, some subleading infrared singularities are inevitable; they cannot be naturally ascribed to the anti-branes backreacting on this background. Moreover, our configuration does not involve smeared branes. This lends further credence to the work of Bena et al. suggesting that the singularities encountered are in no way remnants of smearing that would wash away once brane polarization is taken into account.

Unitarity and fuzzball complementarity: "Alice fuzzes but may not even know it!"

We investigate the recent black hole firewall argument. For a black hole in a typical state we argue that unitarity requires every quantum of radiation leaving the black hole to carry information about the initial state. An information-free horizon is thus inconsistent with unitary at every step of the evaporation process (in particular both before and after Page time). The required horizon-scale structure is manifest in the fuzzball proposal which provides a mechanism for holding up the structure. In this context we want to address the experience of an infalling observer and discuss the recent fuzzball complementarity proposal. Unlike black hole complementarity and observer complementarity which postulate asymptotic observers experience a hot membrane while infalling ones pass freely through the horizon, fuzzball complementarity postulates that fine-grained operators experience the details of the fuzzball microstate and coarse-grained operators experience the black hole. In particular, this implies that an infalling detector tuned to energy E ~ T, where T is the asymptotic Hawking temperature, does not experience free infall while one tuned to E >> T does.

Is Alice burning or fuzzing?

Recently, Almheiri, Marolf, Polchinski and Sully (AMPS) have suggested a Gedankenexperiment to test black hole complementarity. They claim that the postulates of black hole complementarity are mutually inconsistent and choose to give up the "absence of drama" for an infalling observer. According to them the black hole is shielded by a firewall no later than Page time. This has generated some controversy. We find that an interesting picture emerges when we take into account objections from the advocates of fuzzballs. We reformulate AMPS' Gedankenexperiment in the decoherence picture of quantum mechanics and find that low energy wave packets interact with the radiation quanta rather violently while high energy wave packets do not. This is consistent with Mathur's recent proposal of fuzzball complementarity for high energy quanta falling into fuzzballs.

Non-extremal Black Hole Microstates: Fuzzballs of Fire or Fuzzballs of Fuzz ?

We construct the first family of microstate geometries of near-extremal black holes, by placing metastable supertubes inside certain scaling supersymmetric smooth microstate geometries. These fuzzballs differ from the classical black hole solution macroscopically at the horizon scale, and for certain probes the fluctuations between various fuzzballs will be visible as thermal noise far away from the horizon. We discuss whether these fuzzballs appear to infalling observers as fuzzballs of fuzz or as fuzzballs of fire. The existence of these solutions suggests that the singularity of non-extremal black holes is resolved all the way to the outer horizon and this "backwards in time" singularity resolution can shed light on the resolution of spacelike cosmological singularities.

Metastable Supertubes and non-extremal Black Hole Microstates

We study the dynamics of supertubes in smooth bubbling geometries with three charges and three dipole charges that can describe black holes, black rings and their microstates. We find the supertube Hamiltonian in these backgrounds and show that there exist metastable supertube configurations, that can decay into supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric ones via brane-flux annihilation. We also find stable non-supersymmetric configurations. Both the metastable and the stable non-supersymmetric configuration are expected to describe microstate geometries for non-extremal black holes, and we discuss the implication of their existence for the fuzzball proposal.

Counting charged massless states in the (0,2) heterotic CFT/geometry connection

We use simple current techniques and their relation to orbifolds with discrete torsion for studying the (0,2) CFT/geometry duality with non-rational internal N=2 SCFTs. Explicit formulas for the charged spectra of heterotic SO(10) GUT models are computed in terms of their extended Poincaré polynomials and the complementary Poincaré polynomial which can be computed in terms of the elliptic genera. While non-BPS states contribute to the charged spectrum, their contributions can be determined also for non-rational cases. For model building, with generalizations to SU(5) and SM gauge groups, one can take advantage of the large class of Landau-Ginzburg orbifold examples.
