Isotopic chains around oxygen from evolved chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions

We extend the formalism of self-consistent Green's function theory to include three-body interactions and apply it to isotopic chains around oxygen for the first time. The third-order algebraic diagrammatic construction [ADC(3)] equations for two-body Hamiltonians can be exploited upon defining system-dependent one- and two-body interactions coming from the three-body force, and correspondingly dropping interaction reducible diagrams. This goes beyond the standard normal ordering truncations recently used in ab-inito studies. The Koltun sum rule for the total binding energy acquires a correction due to the added three-body interaction. This formalism is then applied to study chiral two-nucleon (2N) and three-nucleon forces (3NF) evolved to low momentum cutoffs. We find that these interactions reproduce the binding energies of nitrogen, oxygen and fluorine isotopes to great accuracy, providing clear indication of the predictive power of this approach. All three neutron driplines are correctly predicted when full 3NF are included. The formalism introduced also allows to calculate form factors for nucleon transfer on doubly magic systems.

Self-consistent Green's functions formalism with three-body interactions

We extend the self-consistent Green's functions formalism to take into account three-body interactions. We analyze the perturbative expansion in terms of Feynman diagrams and define effective one- and two-body interactions, which allows for a substantial reduction of the number of diagrams. The procedure can be taken as a generalization of the normal ordering of the Hamiltonian to fully correlated density matrices. We give examples up to third order in perturbation theory. To define nonperturbative approximations, we extend the equation of motion method in the presence of three-body interactions. We propose schemes that can provide nonperturbative resummation of three-body interactions. We also discuss two different extensions of the Koltun sum rule to compute the ground state of a many-body system.

Neutrino interactions in neutron matter

Neutrino flow is the dominant mechanism of energy transfer in the latest stages of supernovae explosions and in compact stars. The Standard Model of particle physics and accelerator data, provide a satisfactory description of neutrino physics in vacuum up to TeV scale. Nevertheless modeling the dynamics of neutrino interaction in the nuclear environment involves severe difficulties. This thesis in mainly aimed at obtaining the weak response of infinite matter, using both the Correlated Basis Function theory and Landau Theory of Fermi liquid to take into account properly nucleon-nucleon hard core potential and long range correlation (quasi-particle, collective modes, ecc.)

Weak response of neutron matter at low momentum transfer

The Landau parameters obtained from the matrix elements of an effective interaction recently derived within the formalism of correlated basis functions have been used to carry out a study of the weak response of neutron matter in the region of low momentum transfer. The proposed approach allows for a consistent description of different interaction effects and can be extended to describe matter at non vanishing temperature. The results show that interactions lead to a sizable enhancement of the neutrino mean free path in cold neutron matter. The dependence of the mean free path on temperature and neutrino energy is also analyzed.
