Shock Interaction in Plane Symmetry

We consider the problem of interaction of two oncoming shocks in plane symmetry for a barotropic fluid. We establish a local in time solution after the point of interaction, thereby determining the state behind the emerged shocks which originate at the interaction point. The location of these shocks in space time being unknown the problem constitutes a double free boundary problem, i.e.~complete data for the problem is only given in a single point, the interaction point. This article can be viewed as an extension of the article arXiv:2112.15266 which deals with the reflection of a shock on a wall.

Shock Reflection in Plane Symmetry

We consider the problem of shock reflection on a solid wall in plane symmetry for a barotropic fluid. We establish a local in time solution after the point of reflection, thereby determining the state behind the reflected shock. The location of the reflected shock in space time being unknown the problem constitutes a free boundary problem. Furthermore, the quantity describing the thermodynamic state of the fluid along the wall being also unknown, complete data for the problem is only given in a single point, the reflection point.

Characteristic Initial Value Problem for Spherically Symmetric Barotropic Flow

We study the equations of motion for a barotropic fluid in spherical symmetric flow. Making use of the Riemann invariants we consider the characteristic form of these equations. In a first part, we show that the resulting constraint equations along characteristics can be solved globally away from the center of symmetry. In a second part, given data on two intersecting characteristics, we show existence and uniqueness of a smooth solution in a neighborhood in the future of these characteristics.

Shock Development in Spherical Symmetry

The general problem of shock formation in three space dimensions was solved by D. Christodoulou in his 2007 monograph: 'The Formation of Shocks in 3-dimensional Fluids'. In this work also a complete description of the maximal development of the initial data is provided. This description sets up the problem of continuing the solution beyond the point where the solution ceases to be regular. This problem is called the shock development problem. It belongs to the category of free boundary problems but possesses the additional property of having singular initial data due to the behavior of the solution at the blowup surface. The present work delivers the solution to this problem in the case of spherical symmetry for a barotropic fluid. A complete description of the singularities associated to the development of shocks in terms of smooth functions is given.

Self-Gravitating Relativistic Fluids: The Formation of a Free Phase Boundary in the Phase Transition from Hard to Soft

In the 1990's Christodoulou introduced an idealized fluid model intended to capture some of the features of the gravitational collapse of a massive star to form a neutron star or a black hole. This was the two-phase model introduced in 'Self-gravitating relativistic fluids: a two phase model', Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 130, 343-400 (1995). The present work deals with the formation of a free phase boundary in the phase transition from hard to soft in this model. In this case the phase boundary has corners at the null points, the points which separate the timelike and spacelike components of the interface between the two phases. We prove existence and uniqueness of a free phase boundary. Also the local form of the shock near the null point is established.
