On realizing homology classes by maps of restricted complexity

We show that in every codimension greater than one there exists a mod 2 homology class in some closed manifold (of sufficiently high dimension) which cannot be realized by an immersion of closed manifolds. The proof gives explicit obstructions (in terms of cohomology operations) for realizability of mod 2 homology classes by immersions. We also prove the corresponding result in which the word `immersion' is replaced by `map with some restricted set of multi-singularities'.

Multiplicative properties of Morin maps

In the first part of the paper we construct a ring structure on the rational cobordism classes of Morin maps (i. e. smooth generic maps of corank 1). We show that associating to a Morin map its singular strata defines a ring homomorphism to $Ω_* \otimes \Q$, the rational oriented cobordism ring. This is proved by analyzing multiple-point sets of product immersion. Using these homomorphisms we are able to identify the ring of Morin maps. In the second part of the paper we compute the oriented Thom polynomial of the Σ2Σ^2 singularity type with $\Q$ coefficients. Then we provide a product formula for the Σ2Σ^2 and the Σ1,1Σ^{1,1} singularities.
