Spanning Components and Surfaces Under Minimum Vertex Degree

We study minimum vertex-degree conditions in 3-uniform hypergraphs for (tight) spanning components and (combinatorial) surfaces. Our main results show that a 3-uniform hypergraph $G$ on $n$ vertices contains a spanning component if $δ_1(G) \gtrsim \tfrac{1}{2} \binom{n}{2}$ and a spanning copy of any surface if $δ_1(G) \gtrsim \tfrac{5}{9} \binom{n}{2}$, which in both cases is asymptotically optimal. This extends the work of Georgakopoulos, Haslegrave, Montgomery, and Narayanan who determined the corresponding minimum codegree conditions in this setting.

Coloring graphs by translates in the circle

The fractional and circular chromatic numbers are the two most studied non-integral refinements of the chromatic number of a graph. Starting from the definition of a coloring base of a graph, which originated in work related to ergodic theory, we formalize the notion of a gyrocoloring of a graph: the vertices are colored by translates of a single Borel set in the circle group, and neighbouring vertices receive disjoint translates. The corresponding gyrochromatic number of a graph always lies between the fractional chromatic number and the circular chromatic number. We investigate basic properties of gyrocolorings. In particular, we construct examples of graphs whose gyrochromatic number is strictly between the fractional chromatic number and the circular chromatic number. We also establish several equivalent definitions of the gyrochromatic number, including a version involving all finite abelian groups.

Ramsey upper density of infinite graphs

For a fixed infinite graph $H$, we study the largest density of a monochromatic subgraph isomorphic to $H$ that can be found in every two-coloring of the edges of $K_{\mathbb{N}}$. This is called the Ramsey upper density of $H$, and was introduced by Erdős and Galvin. Recently, the Ramsey upper density of the infinite path was determined. Here, we find the value of this density for all locally finite graphs $H$ up to a factor of 2, answering a question of DeBiasio and McKenney. We also find the exact density for a wide class of bipartite graphs, including all locally finite forests. Our approach relates this problem to the solution of an optimization problem for continuous functions. We show that, under certain conditions, the density depends only on the chromatic number of $H$, the number of components of $H$, and the expansion ratio $|N(I)|/|I|$ of the independent sets of $H$.
