Heterotic Strings on ${\mathbb T^3}/{\mathbb Z_2}$, Nikulin involutions and M-theory

We first describe the low energy dynamics of ten dimensional heterotic supergravity compactified on the smooth, flat 3-manifold ${\mathbb T^3}/{\mathbb Z_2}$, without supersymmetry, and explain how it arises from flat heterotic gauge fields. The semi-classical theory has both Coulomb and Higgs branches of non-supersymmetric vacua. We then give an exact worldsheet description as asymmetric orbifolds of $\mathbb T^3$, where the orbifold generator involves a Nikulin non-symplectic involution $θ$ of the even self-dual lattice $Γ_{(19,3)}$. Along the way we briefly compare our findings with M-theory on $\text{K3}/θ$. Our construction gives a novel CFT description of the semi-classical field theory moduli space. In particular, the Wilson line parameters in the lattice $I\subset Γ_{(19,3)}$ of signature $(19-s,1)$ which is invariant under $θ$, and in its orthogonal complement $N$, correspond respectively to Coulomb and Higgs branch moduli. There is a rich pattern of transitions amongst Higgs and Coulomb branches which we describe using the worldsheet theory.

On scale separation in type II AdS flux vacua

We study the separation of AdS and Kaluza-Klein (KK) scales in type II 4d AdS orientifold vacua. We first address this problem in toroidal/orbifold type IIA vacua with metric fluxes, corresponding to compactifications in twisted tori, both from the 4d and 10d points of view. We show how the naive application of the effective 4d theory leads to results which violate the AdS distance conjecture, in a class of $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric models which have a 10d lifting to a compactification on $S^3\times S^3$. We show how using KK scales properly modified by the compact metric leads to no separation of scales with $M^2_{\text{KK}} = \mathfrak{c} |Λ|$, with $\mathfrak{c}$ a numerical constant independent of fluxes. This applies with no need to keep non-leading fluxes fixed. We also consider a class of IIB models with non-geometric fluxes in which the effective field theory analysisseems to lead to a naive separation of scales and a violation of the AdS distance conjecture. It has a T-dual which again may be understood as a 10d type IIA theory compactified on $S^3\times S^3$. In this geometric dual one again observes that the strong AdS distance conjecture is obeyed with $M^2_{\text{KK}} = \mathfrak{c}' |Λ|$, if one takes into account the curvature in the internal space. These findings seem to suggest that all toroidal/orbifold models with fluxes in this class obey $M^2_{\text{KK}} = \mathfrak{c} |Λ|$ with $\mathfrak{c}$ a flux-independent numerical constant.

Heterotic T-fects, 6D SCFTs, and F-Theory

We study the $(1,0)$ six-dimensional SCFTs living on defects of non-geometric heterotic backgrounds (T-fects) preserving a $E_7\times E_8$ subgroup of $E_8\times E_8$. These configurations can be dualized explicitly to F-theory on elliptic K3-fibered non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds. We find that the majority of the resulting dual threefolds contain non-resolvable singularities. In those cases in which we can resolve the singularities we explicitly determine the SCFTs living on the defect. We find a form of duality in which distinct defects are described by the same IR fixed point. For instance, we find that a subclass of non-geometric defects are described by the SCFT arising from small heterotic instantons on ADE singularities.

Non-perturbative effects and Yukawa hierarchies in F-theory SU(5) Unification

Local SU(5) F-theory models lead naturally to Yukawa couplings for the third generation of quarks and leptons, but inducing Yukawas for the lighter generations has proven elusive. Corrections coming from gauge fluxes fail to generate the required couplings, and naively the same applies to instanton effects. We nevertheless revisit the effect of instantons in F-theory GUT constructions and find that contributions previously ignored in the literature induce the leading non-perturbative corrections to the Yukawa couplings. We apply our results to the case of 10 x 5* x 5* couplings in local SU(5) F-theory GUTs, showing that non-perturbative effects naturally lead to hierarchical Yukawas. The hypercharge flux required to break SU(5) down to the SM does not affect the holomorphic Yukawas but does modify the profile of the wavefunctions, explaining the difference between the D-quark and lepton couplings at the unification scale. The combination of non-perturbative corrections and magnetic fluxes allows to describe the measured lepton and D-quark masses of second and third generations in the SM.

Up-type quark masses in SU(5) F-theory models

F-theory SU(5) unification has been proposed as a scenario where the mass of the top quark is naturally large, as opposed to type II SU(5) models. We analyze this claim from the viewpoint of local SU(5) F-theory models, by explicitly computing the 10 x 10 x 5 Yukawa couplings that are developed in the vicinity of an E6 singularity. Realizing this singularity via T-branes allows for a non-trivial mass for the top quark, while lighter generations of up-type quarks still have vanishing Yukawa couplings. Nevertheless, we show that by taking instanton effects into account non-vanishing Yukawas are induced for all U-quark families, together with a hierarchical structure at the level of the superpotential. Finally, by solving for internal wavefunction profiles we compute physical U-quark Yukawa couplings and show that this F-theory scenario allows to describe the measured top quark mass, as well as the observed quotients of U-quark masses.
