Index saddle for supersymmetric F1-P black ring

We construct the index saddle for the supersymmetric F1--P black ring. Our construction proceeds by taking a supersymmetric limit of a non-supersymmetric doubly spinning F1--P black ring. We express the resulting saddle as a three-center Bena--Warner solution. The black ring saddle possesses a finite-area event horizon, yet the two-derivative index vanishes. The solution is singular on certain subspaces of the horizon, where higher-derivative corrections are expected to become important. We argue that, once such corrections are taken into account, the solution can yield a finite result. In particular, we present a scaling analysis showing that the index agrees with the microscopic result, up to an overall numerical constant that cannot be fixed by the scaling argument alone. This analysis applies only within a restricted region of parameter space, whose full significance is not yet fully understood.

Black Hole Hair Removal For N=4 CHL Models

Although BMPV black holes in flat space and in Taub-NUT space have identical near-horizon geometries, they have different indices from the microscopic analysis. For K3 compactification of type IIB theory, Sen et al in a series of papers identified that the key to resolving this puzzle is the black hole hair modes: smooth, normalisable, bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom living outside the horizon. In this paper, we extend their study to N = 4 CHL orbifold models. For these models, the puzzle is more challenging due to the presence of the twisted sectors. We identify hair modes in the untwisted as well as twisted sectors. We show that after removing the contributions of the hair modes from the microscopic partition functions, the 4d and 5d horizon partition functions agree. Special care is taken to present details on the smoothness analysis of hair modes for rotating black holes, thereby filling an essential gap in the literature.

Supertranslations at Timelike Infinity

We propose a definition of asymptotic flatness at timelike infinity in four spacetime dimensions. We present a detailed study of the asymptotic equations of motion and the action of supertranslations on asymptotic fields. We show that the Lee-Wald symplectic form $Ω(g, δ_1 g, δ_2 g)$ does not get contributions from future timelike infinity with our boundary conditions. As a result, the "future charges" can be computed on any two-dimensional surface surrounding the sources at timelike infinity. We present expressions for supertranslation and Lorentz charges.

Thermodynamics of BPS and Near-BPS AdS6 Black Holes

We develop the thermodynamics of BPS and near-BPS AdS6 black holes. We study the phase diagram of BPS black holes in the grand canonical ensemble. We highlight two distinct deformations orthogonal to the BPS surface: (i) increasing the temperature while keeping the charges fixed, (ii) changing the charges while maintaining extremality such that the BPS constraint is no longer satisfied. For both these deformations, we show that the considerations of the BPS entropy function can be extended to describe the near-BPS regime. The excess entropy together with changes in all potentials are perfectly accounted for via the extremization principle.

Horizon Hair from Inversion Symmetry

The extreme Reissner-Nordström solution has a discrete conformal isometry that maps the future event horizon to future null infinity and vice versa, the Couch-Torrence inversion isometry. We study the dynamics of a probe Maxwell field on the extreme Reissner-Nordström solution in light of this symmetry. We present a gauge fixing that is compatible with the inversion symmetry. The gauge fixing allows us to relate the gauge parameter at the future horizon to future null infinity, which further allows us to study global charges for large gauge symmetries in the exterior of the extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole. Along the way, we construct Newman-Penrose and Aretakis like conserved quantities along future null infinity and the future event horizon, respectively, and relate them via the Couch-Torrence inversion symmetry.

Charged Vaidya Solution Satisfies Weak Energy Condition

The external matter stress-tensor supporting charged Vaidya solution appears to violate weak energy condition in certain region of the spacetime. Motivated by this, a new interpretation of charged Vaidya solution was proposed by Ori [1] in which the energy condition continues to be satisfied. In this construction, one glues an outgoing Vaidya solution to the original ingoing Vaidya solution provided the surface where the external stress-tensor vanishes is spacelike. We revisit this study and extend it to higher-dimensions, to AdS settings, and to higher-derivative f(R) theories. In asymptotically flat space context, we explore in detail the case when the mass function m(v) is proportional to the charge function q(v). When the proportionality constant ν= q(v)/m(v) lies in between zero and one, we show that the surface where the external stress-tensor vanishes is spacelike and lies in between the inner and outer apparent horizons.

Internal Structure of Charged AdS Black Holes

When an electrically charged black hole is perturbed its inner horizon becomes a singularity, often referred to as the Poisson-Israel mass inflation singularity. Ori constructed a model of this phenomenon for asymptotically flat black holes, in which the metric can be determined explicitly in the mass inflation region. In this paper we implement the Ori model for charged AdS black holes. We find that the mass function inflates faster than the flat space case as the inner horizon is approached. Nevertheless, the mass inflation singularity is still a weak singularity: although spacetime curvature becomes infinite, tidal distortions remain finite on physical objects attempting to cross it.

Smooth non-extremal D1-D5-P solutions as charged gravitational instantons

We present an alternative and more direct construction of the non-supersymmetric D1-D5-P supergravity solutions found by Jejjala, Madden, Ross and Titchener. We show that these solutions --- with all three charges and both rotations turned on --- can be viewed as a charged version of the Myers-Perry instanton. We present an inverse scattering construction of the Myers-Perry instanton metric in Euclidean five-dimensional gravity. The angular momentum bounds in this construction turn out to be precisely the ones necessary for the smooth microstate geometries. We add charges on the Myers-Perry instanton using appropriate SO(4,4) hidden symmetry transformations. The full construction can be viewed as an extension and simplification of a previous work by Katsimpouri, Kleinschmidt and Virmani.

Holographic description of non-supersymmetric orbifolded D1-D5-P solutions

Non-supersymmetric black hole microstates are of great interest in the context of the black hole information paradox. We identify the holographic description of the general class of non-supersymmetric orbifolded D1-D5-P supergravity solutions found by Jejjala, Madden, Ross and Titchener. This class includes both completely smooth solutions and solutions with conical defects, and in the near-decoupling limit these solutions describe degrees of freedom in the cap region. The CFT description involves a general class of states obtained by fractional spectral flow in both left-moving and right-moving sectors, generalizing previous work which studied special cases in this class. We compute the massless scalar emission spectrum and emission rates in both gravity and CFT and find perfect agreement, thereby providing strong evidence for our proposed identification. We also investigate the physics of ergoregion emission as pair creation for these orbifolded solutions. Our results represent the largest class of non-supersymmetric black hole microstate geometries with identified CFT duals presently known.

Geroch Group Description of Black Holes

On one hand the Geroch group allows one to associate spacetime independent matrices with gravitational configurations that effectively only depend on two coordinates. This class includes stationary axisymmetric four- and five-dimensional black holes. On the other hand, a recently developed inverse scattering method allows one to factorize these matrices to explicitly construct the corresponding spacetime configurations. In this work we demonstrate the construction as well as the factorization of Geroch group matrices for a wide class of black hole examples. In particular, we obtain the Geroch group SL(3,R) matrices for the five-dimensional Myers-Perry and Kaluza-Klein black holes and the Geroch group SU(2,1) matrix for the four-dimensional Kerr-Newman black hole. We also present certain non-trivial relations between the Geroch group matrices and charge matrices for these black holes.

Non-supersymmetric Microstates of the MSW System

We present an analysis parallel to that of Giusto, Ross, and Saxena (arXiv:0708.3845) and construct a discrete family of non-supersymmetric microstate geometries of the Maldacena-Strominger-Witten system. The supergravity configuration in which we look for the smooth microstates is constructed using SO(4,4) dualities applied to an appropriate seed solution. The SO(4,4) approach offers certain technical advantages. Our microstate solutions are smooth in five dimensions, as opposed to all previously known non-supersymmetric microstates with AdS3 cores, which are smooth only in six dimensions. The decoupled geometries for our microstates are related to global AdS3 x S2 by spectral flows.

Subtracted Geometry from Harrison Transformations: II

We extend our previous study (arXiv:1203.5088) to the case of five-dimensional multi-charge black holes, thus showing that these configurations and their subtracted geometries also lie in a 3d duality orbit. In order to explore the 3d duality orbit, we do a timelike reduction from 5d to 4d and a spacelike reduction from 4d to 3d. We present our analysis in the notation of Euclidean N=2 supergravity and its c-map. We also relate our analysis to that of Cvetič, Guica, and Saleem.

An inverse scattering formalism for STU supergravity

STU supergravity becomes an integrable system for solutions that effectively only depend on two variables. This class of solutions includes the Kerr solution and its charged generalizations that have been studied in the literature. We here present an inverse scattering method that allows to systematically construct solutions of this integrable system. The method is similar to the one of Belinski and Zakharov for pure gravity but uses a different linear system due to Breitenlohner and Maison and here requires some technical modifications. We illustrate this method by constructing a four-charge rotating solution from flat space. A generalization to other set-ups is also discussed.

Charged black rings from inverse scattering

The inverse scattering method of Belinsky and Zakharov is a powerful method to construct solutions of vacuum Einstein equations. In particular, in five dimensions this method has been successfully applied to construct a large variety of black hole solutions. Recent applications of this method to Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton (EMd) theory, for the special case of Kaluza-Klein dilaton coupling, has led to the construction of the most general black ring in this theory. In this contribution, we review the inverse scattering method and its application to the EMd theory. We illustrate the efficiency of these methods with a detailed construction of an electrically charged black ring.

Inverse Scattering and the Geroch Group

We study the integrability of gravity-matter systems in D=2 spatial dimensions with matter related to a symmetric space G/K using the well-known linear systems of Belinski-Zakharov (BZ) and Breitenlohner-Maison (BM). The linear system of BM makes the group structure of the Geroch group manifest and we analyse the relation of this group structure to the inverse scattering method of the BZ approach in general. Concrete solution generating methods are exhibited in the BM approach in the so-called soliton transformation sector where the analysis becomes purely algebraic. As a novel example we construct the Kerr-NUT solution by solving the appropriate purely algebraic Riemann-Hilbert problem in the BM approach.

On unitary subsectors of polycritical gravities

We study higher-derivative gravity theories in arbitrary space-time dimension d with a cosmological constant at their maximally critical points where the masses of all linearized perturbations vanish. These theories have been conjectured to be dual to logarithmic conformal field theories in the (d-1)-dimensional boundary of an AdS solution. We determine the structure of the linearized perturbations and their boundary fall-off behaviour. The linearized modes exhibit the expected Jordan block structure and their inner products are shown to be those of a non-unitary theory. We demonstrate the existence of consistent unitary truncations of the polycritical gravity theory at the linearized level for odd rank.

Extremal limits of the Cvetic-Youm black hole and nilpotent orbits of G2(2)

We study extremal cohomogeneity one five-dimensional asymptotically flat black holes of minimal supergravity in terms of the geodesics generated by nilpotent elements of the Lie algebra g2(2) on the coset manifold G2(2)/SO(2,2). There are two branches of regular extremal black holes with these properties: (i) the supersymmetric BMPV branch, and (ii) the non-supersymmetric extremal branch. We show that both of these branches are reproduced by nilpotent SO(2,2)-orbits. Furthermore, we show that the partial ordering of nilpotent orbits of G2(2) is in one-to-one correspondence with the phase diagram of these extremal black holes.

Supertranslations and Holographic Stress Tensor

It is well known in the context of four dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes that the leading order boundary metric must be conformal to unit de Sitter metric when hyperbolic cutoffs are used. This situation is very different from asymptotically AdS settings where one is allowed to choose an arbitrary boundary metric. The closest one can come to changing the boundary metric in the asymptotically flat context, while maintaining the group of asymptotic symmetries to be Poincare, is to change the so-called `supertranslation frame' ω. The most studied choice corresponds to taking ω= 0. In this paper we study consequences of making alternative choices. We perform this analysis in the covariant phase space approach as well as in the holographic renormalization approach. We show that all choices for ωare allowed in the sense that the covariant phase space is well defined irrespective of how we choose to fix supertranslations. The on-shell action and the leading order boundary stress tensor are insensitive to the supertranslation frame. The next to leading order boundary stress tensor depends on the supertranslation frame but only in a way that the transformation of angular momentum under translations continues to hold as in special relativity.

Asymptotic Flatness, Taub-NUT, and Variational Principle

Using hyperbolic temporal and spatial cut-offs to define 4d asymptotically flat spacetimes, we show that supertranslation ambiguities in the asymptotic fields can all be removed even in the presence of gravitational magnetic charges. We then show that configurations with different electric and magnetic four-momenta can be consistently considered in the Mann-Marolf variational principle. This generalizes the previous result where variations over asymptotically flat configurations with fixed magnetic four-momenta were considered. We also express Kerr Taub-NUT metric to the leading and next to leading order in the Beig-Schmidt form, and compare the asymptotic form with the tensor harmonics on 3d de Sitter space.

Inverse Scattering Construction of a Dipole Black Ring

Using the inverse scattering method in six dimensions we construct the dipole black ring of five dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with dilaton coupling a = 2(2/3)^(1/2).The 5d theory can be thought of as the NS sector of low energy string theory in Einstein frame. It can also be obtained by dimensionally reducing six-dimensional vacuum gravity on a circle. Our new approach uses GL(4, R) integrability structure of the theory inherited from six-dimensional vacuum gravity. Our approach is also general enough to potentially generate dipole black objects carrying multiple rotations as well as more exotic multi-horizon configurations.

On Asymptotic Flatness and Lorentz Charges

In this paper we establish two results concerning four-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes at spatial infinity. First, we show that the six conserved Lorentz charges are encoded in two unique, distinct, but mutually dual symmetric divergence free tensors that we construct from the equations of motion. Second, we show that integrability of Einstein's equations in the asymptotic expansion is sufficient to establish the equivalence between counter-term charges defined from the variational principle and charges defined by Ashtekar and Hansen. These results clarify earlier constructions of conserved charges in the hyperboloid representation of spatial infinity. In showing this, parity condition on the mass aspect is not needed. Along the way in establishing these results, we prove two lemmae on tensor fields on three dimensional de Sitter spacetime stated by Ashtekar-Hansen and Beig-Schmidt and state and prove three additional lemmae.

A General Black String and its Microscopics

Using G2(2) dualities we construct the most general black string solution of minimal five-dimensional ungauged supergravity. The black string has five independent parameters, namely, the magnetic one-brane charge, smeared electric zero-brane charge, boost along the string direction, energy above the BPS bound, and rotation in the transverse space. In one extremal limit it reduces to the three parameter supersymmetric string of five-dimensional minimal supergravity; in another extremal limit it reduces to the three parameter non-supersymmetric extremal string of five-dimensional minimal supergravity. It also admits an extremal limit when it has maximal rotation in the four-dimensional transverse space. The decoupling limit of our general black string is a BTZ black hole times a two sphere. The macroscopic entropy of the string is reproduced by the Maldacena-Strominger-Witten CFT in appropriate ranges of the parameters. When the pressureless condition is imposed, our string describes the infinite radius limit of the most general class of black rings of minimal supergravity. We discuss implications our solution has for extremal and non-extremal black rings of minimal supergravity.

Extremal solutions of the S3 model and nilpotent orbits of G2(2)

We study extremal black hole solutions of the S3 model (obtained by setting S=T=U in the STU model) using group theoretical methods. Upon dimensional reduction over time, the S3 model exhibits the pseudo-Riemannian coset structure G/K with G=G2(2) and K=SO(2,2). We study nilpotent K-orbits of G2(2) corresponding to non-rotating single-center extremal solutions. We find six such distinct K-orbits. Three of these orbits are supersymmetric, one is non-supersymmetric, and two are unphysical. We write general solutions and discuss examples in all four physical orbits. We show that all solutions in supersymmetric orbits when uplifted to five-dimensional minimal supergravity have single-center Gibbons-Hawking space as their four-dimensional Euclidean hyper-Kähler base space. We construct hitherto unknown extremal (supersymmetric as well as non-supersymmetric) pressureless black strings of minimal five-dimensional supergravity and briefly discuss their relation to black rings.

G2 Dualities in D=5 Supergravity and Black Strings

Five dimensional minimal supergravity dimensionally reduced on two commuting Killing directions gives rise to a G2 coset model. The symmetry group of the coset model can be used to generate new solutions by applying group transformations on a seed solution. We show that on a general solution the generators belonging to the Cartan and nilpotent subalgebras of G2 act as scaling and gauge transformations, respectively. The remaining generators of G2 form a sl(2,R)+sl(2,R) subalgebra that can be used to generate non-trivial charges. We use these generators to generalize the five dimensional Kerr string in a number of ways. In particular, we construct the spinning electric and spinning magnetic black strings of five dimensional minimal supergravity. We analyze physical properties of these black strings and study their thermodynamics. We also explore their relation to black rings.

Microscopics of Extremal Kerr from Spinning M5 Branes

We show that the spinning magnetic one-brane in minimal five-dimensional supergravity admits a decoupling limit that interpolates smoothly between a self-dual null orbifold of AdS_3 \times S^2 and the near-horizon limit of the extremal Kerr black hole times a circle. We use this interpolating solution to understand the field theory dual to spinning M5 branes as a deformation of the Discrete Light Cone Quantized (DLCQ) Maldacena-Stominger-Witten (MSW) CFT. In particular, the conformal weights of the operators dual to the deformation around AdS_3 \times S^2 are calculated. We present pieces of evidence showing that a CFT dual to the four-dimensional extremal Kerr can be obtained from the deformed MSW CFT.

Modave Lectures on Fuzzballs and Emission from the D1-D5 System

These lecture notes present an introduction to the fuzzball proposal and emission from the D1-D5 system which is geared to an audience of graduate students and others with little background in the subject. The presentation begins with a discussion of the Penrose process and Hawking radiation. The fuzzball proposal is then introduced, and the two- and three-charge systems are reviewed. In the three-charge case details are not discussed. A detailed discussion of emission calculations for D1-D5-P black holes and for certain non-extremal fuzzballs from both the gravity and CFT perspectives is included. We explicitly demonstrate how seemingly different emission processes in gravity, namely, Hawking radiation and superradiance from D1-D5-P black holes, and ergoregion emission from certain non-extremal fuzzballs, are only different manifestations of the same phenomenon in the CFT.

Integrability of Five Dimensional Minimal Supergravity and Charged Rotating Black Holes

We explore the integrability of five-dimensional minimal supergravity in the presence of three commuting Killing vectors. We argue that to see the integrability structure of the theory one necessarily has to perform an Ehlers reduction to two dimensions. A direct dimensional reduction to two dimensions does not allow us to see the integrability of the theory in an easy way. This situation is in contrast with vacuum five-dimensional gravity. We derive the Belinski-Zakharov (BZ) Lax pair for minimal supergravity based on a symmetric 7x7 coset representative matrix for the coset G2/(SL(2,R) x SL(2,R)). We elucidate the relationship between our BZ Lax pair and the group theoretic Lax pair previously known in the literature. The BZ Lax pair allows us to generalize the well-known BZ dressing method to five-dimensional minimal supergravity. We show that the action of the three-dimensional hidden symmetry transformations on the BZ dressing method is simply the group action on the BZ vectors. As an illustration of our formalism, we obtain the doubly spinning five-dimensional Myers-Perry black hole by applying solitonic transformations on the Schwarzschild black hole. We also derive the Cvetic-Youm black hole by applying solitonic transformations on the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole.

Holographic Renormalization of Gravity in Little String Theory Duals

We perform a holographic renormalization of gravity duals to little string theories. In particular, we construct counterterms which yield a well-defined type II action for NS-sector linear dilaton backgrounds. Our methods are based on a similar recent construction in asymptotically flat spacetimes, and our work demonstrates in detail the parallels between asymptotically flat and linear dilaton boundary conditions. The counterterms guarantee that (i) the on-shell action is finite and (ii) asymptotically linear dilaton solutions are stationary points of the action under all boundary condition preserving variations. We use the resulting action to compute a boundary stress tensor and the associated conserved charges.
