Statistical Entropy of Open Quantum Systems

Dissipative quantum systems are frequently described within the framework of the so-called "system-plus-reservoir" approach. In this work we assign their description to the Maximum Entropy Formalism and compare the resulting thermodynamic properties with those of the well - established approaches. Due to the non-negligible coupling to the heat reservoir, these systems are non-extensive by nature, and the former task may require the use of non-extensive parameter dependent informational entropies. In doing so, we address the problem of choosing appropriate forms of those entropies in order to describe a consistent thermodynamics for dissipative quantum systems. Nevertheless, even having chosen the most successful and popular forms of those entropies, we have proven our model to be a counterexample where this sort of approach leads us to wrong results.

Testing Time Reversal Symmetry in Artificial Atoms

Over the past several decades, a rich series of experiments has repeatedly verified the quantum nature of superconducting devices, leading some of these systems to be regarded as artificial atoms. In addition to their application in quantum information processing, these `atoms' provide a test bed for studying quantum mechanics in macroscopic limits. Regarding the last point, we present here a feasible protocol for directly testing time reversal symmetry through the verification of the microreversibility principle in a superconducting artificial atom. Time reversal symmetry is a fundamental property of quantum mechanics and is expected to hold if the dynamics of the artificial atom strictly follow the Schrödinger equation. However, this property has yet to be tested in any macroscopic quantum system. In the end, as an application of this work, we outline how the successful implementation of the protocol would provide the first verification of the quantum work fluctuation theorems with superconducting systems.

Universal Quantum Computation Using Continuous Dynamical Decoupling

We show, for the first time, that continuous dynamical decoupling can preserve the coherence of a two-qubit state as it evolves during a SWAP quantum operation. Hence, because the Heisenberg exchange interaction alone can be used for achieving universal quantum computation, its combination with continuous dynamical decoupling can also make the computation robust against general environmental perturbations. Furthermore, since the exchange-interaction Hamiltonian is invariant under rotations, the same control-field arrangement used to protect a stationary quantum-memory state can also preserve the coherence of the driven qubits. The simplicity of the required control fields greatly improves prospects for an experimental realization.
