The energy-momentum tensor at the earliest stage of relativistic heavy ion collisions

Nuclear collisions at high energies produce a gluon field that can be described using the Colour Glass Condensate (CGC) effective theory at proper times $τ\lesssim 1$ fm/c. The theory can be used to calculate the gluon energy-momentum tensor, which provides information about the early time evolution of the chromo-electric and chromo-magnetic fields, energy density, longitudinal and transverse pressures, and other quantities. We obtain an analytic expression for the energy-momentum tensor using an expansion in the proper time, and working to sixth order. The calculation is technically difficult, in part because the number of terms involved grows rapidly with the order of the $τ$ expansion, but also because of several subtle issues related to the definition of event-averaged correlators, the method chosen to regulate these correlators, and the dependence of results on the parameters introduced by the regularization and nuclear density profile functions. All of these issues are crucially related to the important question of the extent to which we expect a CGC approach to be able to accurately describe the early stages of a heavy ion collision. We present some results for the evolution of the energy density and the longitudinal and transverse pressures. We show that our calculation gives physically meaningful results up to values of the proper time which are close to the regime at which hydrodynamic simulations are initialized. In a companion paper [1] we give a detailed analysis of several other experimentally relevant quantities that can be calculated from the energy-momentum tensor.

Transport of hard probes through glasma

We calculate the transverse momentum broadening $\hat q$ and collisional energy loss $dE/dx$ of hard probes traversing an evolving glasma during the earliest phase of a relativistic heavy-ion collision. We use a Fokker-Planck equation and apply a proper time expansion to describe the temporal evolution of the glasma. The correlators of the chromodynamic fields that determine the Fokker-Planck collision terms, which in turn provide $\hat q$ and $dE/dx$, are computed to fifth order. Both transport coefficients are strongly dependent on time. The maximum values they acquire before the proper time expansion breaks down are large: $\hat q$ is of the order of a few ${\rm GeV^2/fm}$ and $dE/dx \sim 1~{\rm GeV/fm}$. Their precise values depend on the probe's velocity ${\bf v}$, the saturation momentum $Q_s$, and an IR regulator $m$ that is related to the confinement scale. We study the dependence of our results on these quantities. Different regularization procedures are analysed and shown to produce similar results. We also discuss the validity of the proper time expansion and the compatibility of the approximations that are inherent in the derivation of the Fokker-Planck equation. We show that hard probes lose a comparable amount of energy when they propagate through the short-lived glasma phase, and the long-lasting hydrodynamic phase. The conclusion is that the glasma plays an important role in jet quenching.

Effects of the mean field on fluid dynamics in the relaxation time approximation

In this paper the nonequilibrium correction to the distribution function containing a time and space dependent mass is obtained. Given that, fully consistent fluid dynamic equations are formulated. Then, the physics of the bulk viscosity is elaborated for Boltzmann and Bose-Einstein gases within the relaxation time approximation. It is found that the parametric form of the ratio $ζ/τ_R$ for the quantum gas is affected by the infrared cut-off. This may be an indication that the relaxation time approximation is too crude to obtain a reliable form of bulk viscosity.

Heavy Quarks Embedded in Glasma

Heavy quarks, which are produced at the earliest stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions, probe the entire history of the quark-gluon plasma that is created in the collision. Initially the plasma is populated with chromodynamic fields which can be treated as classical. We study the transport of heavy quarks across such a system, which is called glasma, using a Fokker-Planck equation where the quarks interact with long wavelength chromodynamic fields. We compute field correlators which are used to calculate the collision terms of the transport equation. Finally, the energy loss and momentum broadening of heavy quarks in the glasma are studied. Both of these quantities are sizable and strongly directionally dependent.

Supersymmetric plasma systems and their nonsupersymmetric counterparts

In this thesis a systematic comparison of supersymmetric plasma systems and their nonsupersymmetric counterparts is presented. The work is motivated by the AdS/CFT correspondence and the main aim is to check how much the plasma governed by the N=4 super Yang-Mills theory resembles the quark-gluon plasma studied experimentally in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The analysis is done in a weak coupling regime where perturbative methods are applicable. Since the Keldysh-Schwinger approach is used, not only equilibrium but also nonequilibrium plasmas, which are assumed to be ultrarelativistic, are under consideration. First, using the functional techniques we introduce Faddeev-Popov ghosts into the Keldysh-Schwinger formalism of nonAbelian gauge theories. Next the collective excitations of the N=1 SUSY QED plasma are considered and compared to those of the usual QED system. The analysis is repeated to confront with each other the plasmas governed by the N=4 super Yang-Mills and QCD theories. Finally, transport properties of the systems are also discussed. Since both collective excitations and transport characteristics of supersymmetric and nonsupersymmetric plasmas are very similar to each other we conclude that supersymmetric plasma systems are qualitatively the same as their nonsupersymmetric partners in weak coupling regime. The quantitative differences mostly reflect different numbers of degrees of freedom.

Universal Hard-Loop Actions

The effective actions of gauge bosons, fermions and scalars, which are obtained within the hard-loop approximation, are shown to have unique forms for a whole class of gauge theories including QED, scalar QED, super QED, pure Yang-Mills, QCD, super Yang-Mills. The universality occurs irrespective of a field content of each theory and of variety of specific interactions. Consequently, the long-wavelength or semiclassical features of plasma systems governed by these theories such as collective excitations are almost identical. An origin of the universality, which holds within the limits of applicability of the hard-loop approach, is discussed.

Ghosts in Keldysh-Schwinger Formalism

We discuss how to introduce Faddeev-Popov ghosts to the Keldysh-Schwinger formalism describing equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical systems of quantum fields such as the quark-gluon plasma which is considered. The plasma is assumed to be homogeneous in a coordinate space but the momentum distribution of plasma constituents is arbitrary. Using the technique of generating functional, we derive the Slavnov-Taylor identities and one of them expresses the ghost Green's function, which we look for, through the gluon one. As an application, the Green's function of ghosts is used to compute the gluon polarization tensor in the hard loop approximation which appears to be automatically transverse, as required by the gauge invariance.

N=4 Super Yang-Mills Plasma

The N=4 super Yang-Mills plasma is studied in the regime of weak coupling. Collective excitations and collisional processes are discussed. Since the Keldysh-Schwinger approach is used, the collective excitations in both equilibrium and non-equilibrium plasma are under consideration. The dispersion equations of gluon, fermion, and scalar modes are written down and the self-energies, which enter the equations, are computed in the Hard Loop Approximation. The self-energies are discussed in the context of effective action which is also given. The gluon modes and fermion ones appear to be the same as those in the QCD plasma of gluons and massless quarks. The scalar modes are as of a free relativistic massive particle. The binary collisional processes, which occur at the lowest nontrivial order of the coupling constant, are reviewed and then the transport properties of the plasma are discussed. The N=4 super Yang-Mills plasma is finally concluded to be very similar the QCD plasma of gluons and light quarks. The differences mostly reflect different numbers of degrees of freedom in the two systems.

Collisional Processes in Supersymmetric Plasma

Collisional processes in ultrarelativistic N=1 SUSY QED plasma are studied and compared to those in an electromagnetic plasma of electrons, positrons and photons. Cross sections of all binary interactions which occur in the supersymmetric plasma at the order of e^4 are computed. Some processes, in particular the Compton scattering on selectrons, appear to be independent of momentum transfer and thus they are qualitatively different from processes in an electromagnetic plasma. It suggests that transport properties of the SUSY plasma are different than those of its non-supersymmetric counterpart. Energy loss and momentum broadening of a particle traversing the supersymmetric plasma are discussed in detail and the characteristics are shown to be surprisingly similar to those of QED plasma.
