Branched Quantization

We propose a method for quantization of Lagrangians for which the Hamiltonian, as a function of momentum, is a branched function with cusps. Appropriate boundary conditions, which we identify, insure unitary time evolution. In special cases a dual (canonical) transformation maps the problem into a problem of quantum mechanics on singular spatial manifolds, which we also develop. Several possible applications are indicated.

Classical Time Crystals

We consider the possibility that classical dynamical systems display motion in their lowest energy state, forming a time analogue of crystalline spatial order. Challenges facing that idea are identified and overcome. We display arbitrary orbits of an angular variable as lowest-energy trajectories for nonsingular Lagrangian systems. Dynamics within orbits of broken symmetry provide a natural arena for formation of time crystals. We exhibit models of that kind, including a model with traveling density waves.

Constraints on Chronologies

The time ordering of two spacelike separated events is arbitrary, when all inertial frames are taken into account, but for three or more events it is not generally so. We determine the structure of possible time orderings, or chronologies, for multiple events in any number of dimensions, analytically and exhaustively for three events in four space-time dimensions, algorithmically in other cases. We also formulate an alternative criterion, based on convexity, for determining the allowed chronologies of a set of events. We show how the metric of a Lorentz invariant spacetime can be partially reconstructed from a knowledge of the chronologies it supports. Finally, we propose a different but related criterion for allowed chronologies in curved spacetimes.

Gauge Symmetries of the N=2 String

We study the underlying gauge symmetry algebra of the $N=2$ string, which is broken down to a subalgebra in any spacetime background. For given toroidal backgrounds, the unbroken gauge symmetries (corresponding to holomorphic and antiholomorphic worldsheet currents) generate area-preserving diffeomorphism algebras of null 2-tori. A minimal Lie algebraic closure containing all the gauge symmetries that arise in this way, is the background--independent volume--preserving diffeomorphism algebra of the target Narain torus $T^{4,4}$. The underlying symmetries act on the ground ring of functions on $T^{4,4}$ as derivations, much as in the case of the $d=2$ string. A background--independent spacetime action valid for noncompact metrics is presented, whose symmetries are volume--preserving diffeomorphisms. Possible extensions to $N=2$ and $N=1$ heterotic strings are briefly discussed.
