Observing expansive maps

We consider the problem of the observability of positively expansive maps by the time series associated to continuous real functions. For this purpose we prove a general result on the generic observability of a locally injective map of a compact metric space of finite topological dimension, extending earlier work by Gutman [6]. We apply this result to partially solve the problem of finding the minimal number of functions needed to observe a positively expansive map. We prove that two functions are necessary and sufficient for positively expansive maps on tori.

Discrete and Continuous Topological Dynamics: Fields of Cross Sections and Expansive Flows

In this article we consider the general problem of translating definitions and results from the category of discrete-time dynamical systems to the category of flows. We consider the dynamics of homeomorphisms and flows on compact metric spaces, in particular Peano continua. As a translating tool, we construct continuous, symmetric and monotonous fields of local cross sections for an arbitrary flow without singular points. Next, we use this structure in the study of expansive flows on Peano continua. We show that expansive flows admit no stable point and that every point contains a non-trivial continuum in its stable set. As a corollary we obtain that no Peano continuum with an open set homeomorphic with the plane admits an expansive flow. In particular compact surface admits no expansive flow without singular points.

Isolated sets, catenary Lyapunov functions and expansive systems

It is a paper about models for isolated sets and the construction of special hyperbolic Lyapunov functions. We prove that after a suitable surgery every isolated set is the intersection of an attractor and a repeller. We give linear models for attractors and repellers. With these tools we construct hyperbolic Lyapunov functions and metrics around an isolated set whose values along the orbits are catenary curves. Applications are given to expansive flows and homeomorphisms, obtaining, among other things, a hyperbolic metric on local cross sections for an arbitrary expansive flow on a compact metric space.

Pseudo-Anosov maps and continuum theory

In the hyperspace of subcontinua of a compact surface we consider a second order Hausdorff distance. This metric space is compactified in such a way that the stable foliation of a pseudo-Anosov map is naturally identified with a hypercontinuum. We show that negative iterates of a stable arc converges to this hypercontinuum in the considered metric. Some dynamical properties of pseudo-Anosov maps, as topological mixing and the density of stable leaves, are generalized for cw-expansive homeomorphisms of pseudo-Anosov type on compact metric spaces.

Finite Sets with Fake Observable Cardinality

Let $X$ be a compact metric space and let $|A|$ denote the cardinality of a set $A$. We prove that if $f\colon X\to X$ is a homeomorphism and $|X|=\infty$ then for all $δ>0$ there is $A\subset X$ such that $|A|=4$ and for all $k\in Z$ there are $x,y\in f^k(A)$, $x\neq y$, such that $dist(x,y)<δ$. An observer that can only distinguish two points if their distance is grater than $δ$, for sure will say that $A$ has at most 3 points even knowing every iterate of $A$ and that $f$ is a homeomorphism. We show that for hyper-expansive homeomorphisms the same $δ$-observer will not fail about the cardinality of $A$ if we start with $|A|=3$ instead of $4$. Generalizations of this problem are considered via what we call $(m,n)$-expansiveness.

Hyper-expansive Homeomorphisms

A homeomorphism on a compact metric space is said hyper-expansive if every pair of different compact sets are separated by the homeomorphism in the Hausdorff metric. We characterize such dynamics as those with a finite number of orbits and whose non-wandering set is the union of the repelling and the attracting periodic orbits. We also give a characterization of compact metric spaces admiting hyper-expansive homeomorphisms.

Low dimensional bifurcations of snap-back repellors

We study the relationship between homoclinic orbits associated to repellors, usually called snap-back repellors, and expanding sets of smooth endomorphisms. Critical homoclinic orbits constitutes an interesting bifurcation that is locally contained in the boundary of the set of maps having homoclinic orbits. This and other possible routes to the creation of homoclinic orbits are considered in low dimensions.

N-expansive homeomorphisms on surfaces

We exploit the techniques developed in [Le] to study N-expansive homeomorphisms on surfaces. We prove that when f is a 2-expansive homeomorphism defined on a compact boundaryless surface M without wandering points then f is expansive. This condition on the wandering set cannot be relaxed: we present an example of a 2-expansive homeomorphisms on the bitorus with wandering points that is not expansive.
